32-year-old here. Scooby's videos inspired me to start bodybuilding when I was 15. Thank you for your incredible service to the entire bodybuilding community.
60 here. Lots of injuries etc. Appreciated this vid as it spoke to us in a manner you don't hear or see in the age of influencers. Thank you my friend.
Every person is different, I've got over 20 years of wrestling, MMA, 8 years in the Marine Corps and 20 years of lifting. I fortunately have zero issues. I know Marines that have been in for 2 years or less and have chronic pain from the loads we carried. Not everyone is built the same and you need to listen to your body.
No thank you Scooby. I try to use your advice regularly and think of your fitness & finance content as a peak into my hopefully future when I'm your age. Much love from 🇦🇺 💚 💛
You are so right…aging and routines likely at bit different for everyone, but at almost 67 I can do almost everything I used to…except not stretch. If I don’t stretch often (every day or second day) my back hurts. Similar stretching exercises that you showed and I find stretching my hip muscles key. Often if my back hurts and I stretch my hips the pain relief is almost instantaneous. For exercise in my case, I only avoid back squats (have found substitutes) and do keep my reps a little higher. When I’m feeling a bit beat my workout may be all bodyweight and or resistance bands/suspension work. On occasion I take an extra day between strength workouts. Last, I chose to drop 20lbs…strength almost the same, but I did lose size, however being leaner simply makes me feel better overall. It’s simple to lose weight, just not easy. Found simply counting calories and having a deficit every day did the job, but tough to stay that way…my diet habits still want to be that of a 20 year old! You continue to inspire everyone and appreciate you sharing your journey!
What makes you Scooby a standout amongst all the other CZcamsrs on the same topic is that you are honest & down to earth. Easier said than done, but one can have good workouts despite having injuries/conditions and (especially your first videos) without the money for a gym subscription. Thanks!!

You are so right and myself I went from bodybuilding stage to hospital bed in less than one year. I competed in May 2023 at 65 years old at the Venice Muscle Beach Show and I had my right hip replaced September 2023. The surgery went well, however I still needed to get my left hip replaced to regain my mobility. My left hip surgery was scheduled for this May, but in April I had a major medical emergency where I developed a blood clot in my lung that put me in the hospital for 5 days. The doctors told me about 30-40% do not survive an acute pulmonary embolism. The clot started as a Deep Vein Thrombosis in my left calf that broke off and I believe it was my fitness level that helped me to survive. I do not use PED's and all my heart vitals- pulse and blood pressure have been excellent for years. Going forward I just want to get back my mobility and insurance that I will live a long life. To the younger crowd please do not take your health for granted because as you get into your sixties you just never know what might happen. Also take care of your joints and do not lift heavy because you will most likely need a joint replacement sometime in your life!!
Your positive approach to aging is very inspiring. I'm starting to feel my age now at 55 and absorb as much info as I can from you. Thanks for sharing.
"Stupid little muscle" Haha, love it scooby, I have a nagging injury beneath my left shoulder blade since high school football. Immediately resonated with me.
Thanks for your honesty Scooby. It so refreshing to hear the frank reality of trying to keep I shape while aging, instead of all the not natty influencer hype.
Hey Scooby! Still giving out awesome advice as always! Similar to when I needed to buy more weight plates, I remembered you advice of "buy used", "your muscles don't care what kind of weights you use!" and the best advice "don't spend more than a dollar per pound". I recently had to replace a 25lb plate that broke in half. Found a used replacement for $24. New plates are running for $44. Feel free to laugh, but my fitness journey started with P90X. After a fellow Navy member introduced my to your channel, I've been sticking to my strength training regimen with the gear in my garage! The fact you share your wisdom with no "buy my products!" or any other brand peddling and asking for money proves what a genuine guy you are! We all wish nothing but great things thanks to your generosity
i've been subscribed to you from 15 years ago because you were the only good bodybuilding influence, nice to see you today that you are fit and healthy and happy keep em coming!
Thanks for the video Scooby. My friend and training partner recently had a stroke and has lost his ability to speak and has physical deficit on the right hand side of his body. He’ll turn 60 in January next year, so I’ll share this video with him.
Scooby, thank you so much for still telling the truth and guiding. I started with your home workout with just a set of dumbells 15 years ago. Went thru some heavy lifting and now i am where you are. I so often get mad at my body ‘failing’ me but then here you are saying this is normal. Thank you for your wisdom and guidance. Stretching and light work outs it is.
All of these people who want to get BIG dont understand the sad repercussions of gym life. I ended up with a severely damaged left leg with also femoral neuropathy (I am almost 32 years old) 4 years ago, diagnosed from heavy weighted lunges. Heard a loud rip and snap, had to walk with a cane for 2 years straight. Now I cant run, jump or bear significant weight on my left leg and it puts a severe strain on my lower back because without proper balanced left and right leg bending it creates imbalances. LISTEN up people, take your time in the gym. Lift as light as you can go for multiple reps and increase the weight as slowly as you can and try not to rush. I am glad you are educating people about this scoobs just as with your previous videos.
Sorry to hear about your injuries but for me lifting heavy weights regularly keeps me feeling strong and as young as ever at the ripe old age of 53! It’s all about good technique and full range of motion and heavy lifting actually increases your bone density . Of course it’s only possible if your injury free but I’ve proved it’s possible to lift heavy and stay injury free....Mike Ohearn is my inspiration whether he’s Natty or not

I started watching you when my fitness journey began. I was 22 at the time and all my issues started early on (shoulder, spine, hip), it was difficult back then. I didn't know how to properly train and eat and feared I would never be able to reach my goals. Back then you once responded to a comment I left, you were more or less telling me how I can still train and get a lot out of my situation. That really stuck with me and I took it to heart. Thanks for being honest about your fitness. You talk about your back problems (I have the same since I sit at a desk all day writing software), your knees, elbows and lack of cartilage. Fitness is great and I'm sure your life has been better for being fit, but it is refreshing to know that you can't truly stop the aging process. Right wrist - ice skating fall. Left ankle/tibia - horseback riding injury. Started doing yoga this year a couple of times a week in a studio. Game changer.
Scooby, your videos inspire me. I started training at the age of 18, now 41 and my time for PRs is slowly over. Do you think that strength training can be an attack on your cartilage, or an advantage to keep it as strong as possible? Is your shoulder cartilage worn out due to exercise? I am now trying to apply a smart strategy to stay fit for a long time, not too many sets, but continuing to train heavily once a month to keep my strength up.
3:01 Did you ever end up getting an inversion table? I don't know too much about spinal stenosis, but the best spinal decompression comes from uoside down hanging.
I found your materials about 15 years ago at the age of 25. I started to exercise and unfortunately stopped. My body weight exceeded 105 kg at 185 cm tall. And no, it was not muscle mass. Two years ago, at almost 40 years old, I looked in the mirror that stated, "It can't go on like this". I went back to your materials. For the past two years, I have been trying to do some kind of workout every day, be it strength training or cardio. Simple exercises, nothing fancy. I currently weigh 87 kg. I feel much better than when I was 30 years old. To sum up. Your materials are very valuable. They are a valuable contrast from popular fitness influencers who present unrealistic and unhealthy results in a short period of time. From my experience, I would say that there are no shortcuts. You want to be in shape, you need to exercise systematically, making sure that the load is adequate to your capabilities. Again, thanks for your materials :)
Thank you for this video Scooby, I remember telling you you made me look forward to turning 50, when yourself were that age; now I'm getting closer to it myself and am back in the gym at last. Trying to prevent back pain too, and now I do start my workout with cardio :)

Those stretches are great for health!😊 I also love to hang on the pullup bar to stretch my back! Does your shoulder allow to strech like that? Or is it painful?
Hey Scooby, can a beginner get pro bodybuilder size with just machines like the Smith, cables and stack? Along with the idea of the harder the exercise, with free weights, the more better/faster to gain muscle?
Gotta keep moving! With regard to your lower back, do you deep massage your glutes? I have found lying on a tennis ball and rolling on the glutes gets really deep in the muscle to discover deep sore points. Lower back really relieved immediately as I think tight glutes do pull on the pelvis. After the massage I then apply cold there.
I’m 60.75 yrs old. The only time I’m not in severe to chronic pain/discomfort, is when working out. Sitting, standing, trying to lie down/sleep, are all met with reality (pain) after about 15 minutes. The result is being fitter than I ever have been. Wish all the work resulted in diminished pain/discomfort. 😳🙏🙏🙏🙏🤙
Scooby if you could go back to your teens or twenties would you change anything about your training methods giving what you know now, for eg heavy weights low reps.
Scooby I know this sounds crazy but there is evidence out there that you can repair joints without replacements. Literally almost everything we have been told is bs in this world. All the best and keep inspiring buddy
Always nice to see a golden-oldie working out, 95% of the time the folk I see at the gym are young scrotes that have NO REAL REASON to be there other than for vanity. And then they quit after 2 years :D I'm getting on with age myself and used to have nagging joint issues and I found doing very high rep with low resistance bandwork to help me alleviate the shoulder and elbow pain I used to have, something overspeed eccentrics something.
@@jacoblas1371 hmm, yea almost every fitness influencer i follow natural or unnatural talks about having some back issue, shoulder issue , knee issue, shoulder issue , hernias etc :D wonder if anyone makes it to 60s without some surgery
Where it is very similar to me, and yet different in some respects. 3 months and I am 57 years old. Tennis elbow, yes. Spinal stenosis, yes. And a sports hip made of titanium, aluminium, plastic.... but mine spinalstenose is probably closer to the middle of the back. Bench press with dumbbells on the floor.. And I recognize a lot there, but still trying to hit my peak today, since it's been years since I did weight training, and need to lose a lot of weight.. Hate the bike today, but loved that as a child.. I must have dug that up again, and have started to build my own bike that suits me. Exercises I have to do, exercises I can do, and some exercises that I have to stay away from, but am now myself in the process of screwing up my training and my diet, where the goal is not to become world champion in something, but to be happy, and be able to do as much as possible, for as long as possible, and feel good..!
It sure is different for everyone and I have certainly taken many bumps along the way. However the difference between bodybuilding and exercise is that the former is purely about ego, whereas the latter is about robust health.
@@scooby1961that's a great question, one that is lost on most gym rats and "fitness" enthusiasts. Exercise (for fitness), is any training you do to sustainably maintain or possibly improve functionality for robust health. As opposed to sports specific training like bodybuilding, where the goal is muscular proportions. Exercising is about adaptability and can never lead to injury. If you get injured from your training, you aren't exercising. Sports training is about specificity, it's about maximizing a sports specific skillset and can easily lead to injury.

Hey so if i weight 190 at 5 11' do i need to lose some more weight and then lean bulk or should i just start now?
Thank you for this video Scooby, I remember telling you you made me look forward to turning 50, when yourself were that age; now I'm getting closer to it myself and am back in the gym at last. Trying to prevent back pain too, and now I do start my workout with cardio :)
scoobys talking about rib muscle i just pulled the damn thing yesterday talk about not being able to take a deep breathe it sucks
You live in dread of sneezing
@@scooby1961 well im fat as well but ive decided to change im 33 and 250lbs. I started looking at bicycles and have decided on a folding bike!! Thank you for being an inspiration and upfront no bullshit honesty. Hoping an hour a day on a bike will help lose 40-60lbs. Im also going on a keto diet.
This is getting more real for me as every year goes by, more and more of my workouts are stretches, rehab and just trying to get more mobile. Gone are the days of me trying to set PR's with a super heavy back squat
Lean & Mean 🤗
But not a fighting nachine :)
Forgot to mention TRT. @_@
burritoburrito9176
It certainly makes a very big difference
Glad you have everything figured out! How is that superior knowledge working out for you by the way?
Great advice, I find myself for several years now telling people that much my workouts are working around injuries, amd preventive stuff. Lots of bodyweight, yoga stuff mixed with the resistance training. Also, lot of band work seems to help.
Great informative video as always. Thanks and all the best with your recovery.
As a 30 years old man, i can no longer train my body twice per week as i used to do in my early 20s. I just cant recover from high frequency training.
Yep … I also stretch 2 a day , so true now I train to help with other sports ! I’m 65
Nice watch! 😀
Thanks! 😀
What do you attribute your long list of injuries to? Bodybuilding, age, genetics, or pure bad luck??
I never said they were injuries. Please watch ... czcams.com/video/6hWzH3COD_A/video.html czcams.com/video/3bxnmV2K5KI/video.html czcams.com/video/vcHj_AQvZ1k/video.html czcams.com/video/Klujlu8s1O4/video.html czcams.com/video/kdLbU8mwUmM/video.html
Those stretches are great for health!😊
I also love to hang on the pullup bar to stretch my back!
Does your shoulder allow to strech like that? Or is it painful?
Scooby amazing
Hey Scooby, can a beginner get pro bodybuilder size with just machines like the Smith, cables and stack? Along with the idea of the harder the exercise, with free weights, the more better/faster to gain muscle?
No. Very heavy squats, bench, DL + bucketsOsteroids
Are you on gear or TRT?
Gotta keep moving! With regard to your lower back, do you deep massage your glutes? I have found lying on a tennis ball and rolling on the glutes gets really deep in the muscle to discover deep sore points. Lower back really relieved immediately as I think tight glutes do pull on the pelvis. After the massage I then apply cold there.
no, never
I’m 60.75 yrs old. 😳🙏🙏🙏🙏🤙
Hey Scooby, do play beach volleyball anymore?
No, cant. If I could, I wouldnt. Too hard on joints

Let me guess. Joe Rogan is your source
@@scooby1961 haha no
Hello Scooby!
Always nice to see a golden-oldie working out, 95% of the time the folk I see at the gym are young scrotes that have NO REAL REASON to be there other than for vanity. And then they quit after 2 years :D
I'm getting on with age myself and used to have nagging joint issues and I found doing very high rep with low resistance bandwork to help me alleviate the shoulder and elbow pain I used to have, something overspeed eccentrics something.
Does doing those rows with a wider grip cause you shoulder pain? Cause I assume I'd feel amazing for your back.
I thought you had given up CZcams. Thankfully your back.
Watching you do these yoga poses/stretches makes me happy I regularly do yoga now while I'm still young.
is having issues guaranteed with lifting weights for many decades in terms of joint health? :D
I think Scooby mentioned his shoulder issue is from volleyball
Yep, staying active and feeling good is the goal!
Does the 60 second of stretching really it for you? I have lower back pain also, basically just from being heavy and a birth defect i have.
60s for each of 8 stretches done 2x daily. 16min a day
Coach Greg’s Dad rocks!
Drooling @ 6 minute mark
It sure is different for everyone and I have certainly taken many bumps along the way. However the difference between bodybuilding and exercise is that the former is purely about ego, whereas the latter is about robust health.
Define what is “exercise” and what is not
@@scooby1961that's a great question, one that is lost on most gym rats and "fitness" enthusiasts.
Are you announcing the results and prizes of the breakfast challenge? Pff :)
Its a self grsding test, just plug into calorie counter
I’m kinda surprised your muscle mass hasn’t declined faster to be honest. That spill over effect must be legit
Its 25x harder to gain than maintain
Scooby! I can't find that video in which you fart while doing something on the ground. It just gives me life. Which one was it? Thank you for everything!
