Trying Out Some Different Gearing On The 400ex

- I finally decided to change up the gearing on the 400ex. A lot of people run the 13 front, 38 rear like I'm running for xc but I felt like I might benefit from adding a little extra speed in each gear. I decided to bump the rear sprocket down 2 teeth to a 36 tooth. Hope you are enjoying the content! Thanks for watching!

The more you ride and better you get you'll be able to tell a difference. I can notice 1 tooth on the rear especially in turns. Also change both sprockets and the chain at the same time. All your doing is putting more wear on a new chain or sprocket by mixing it with old stuff.

I went from a 15 38 to a 14 39 and it's a turtle on a straight away but a beast on the tight trails and hills
Also changing one tooth in the front either way is like changing 3 teeth on the rear.
I run 16/36 for the dunes 13/38 for technical trails in the Oregon coast mountain range
How is the 16 38 are you quick or is it more a top end or best of both
I think the only way you will really notice that gearing change is if you ride on it for a while and then go back to a 38 and do a couple 5th gear runs. Otherwise its really hard to tell with heavy 20" XC tires on. Gearing changes are much more noticeable with the smaller 18" MX tires in my opinion. Great video man, they keep getting better. I had like a 36 or a 34 and a 14 on mine and it ripped. I'm not sure if I remember right but I think that's what I had. It was stock and it was all they had so I was like .-. The sprocket that came with it shattered into 4 peaces
Nice vid I might try to gear mine a little different now see how I like it… little question, I believe I heard in a different video that your rear sprocket digger/guard is a CV4 Gator Guard? Well anyways where were you able to find that guard I can’t seem to find it but I was able to find some BVC diggers
Yep, that’s correct, but unfortunately they don’t make it anymore.

Hey Tyler. Do you have a full HMF exhaust or just the slip on? How loud is it compared to other quads? I’m looking to buy one for my 400.
I have a full HMF. They are pretty loud. They aren’t obnoxious or anything but you can definitely here them pretty good. They have a nice low tone in my opinion.
Tyler, you ever run into issues with your chain coming off due to no chain guide? Thinking about removing the chain guide from my Houser swinger I keep beating them up and ruining chains.
Nope, never had an issue. Mine used to have a chain guid on it and I took it off since they’re more of an mx thing than xc. As long as you keep your chain decently tight, shouldn’t have an issue.

I'd be careful though.. buy a case saver and you should be good. If the chain come off and smacks the motor it's toast if it cracks the case
What chain do you usually run on the 400
I’ve always ran the DID X-ring chains. Never had one break and I’ll be honest, I hardly ever oil my chain as much as I should and still never had an issue.

what skid are u use on 400ex
If your talking about the swingarm skid plate, I don’t use one. I have a seperate sprocket and rotor guard. If your talking about the belly skid, I have an aluminum skid plate that I’ve always used but I just recently bought a new poly skid from BCC skids.
