Thank you everyone for enjoying the video. For those who asked, The camera and lens used in the video are shown in the description above.
Straight to the point, loved it
Excellent excellent excellent.very nice how you did not rush through it like so many people feel like they have to talk so fast.
You got it my friend.
Keith Kuhn
PS do you have any thoughts on the Sony XN5U video camera ?
Thanks
Please help with monochrome photography
Excellent video!! Thank you for sharing the insight! Greatly Appreciate it !
Hyun Ralph Jeong
Excellent video
I’ve been a photographer for over 50 years. I’ve had aperture and shutter priority cameras. I’ve used Kodachrome and Fujichrome as well as other type of print film. I say this to let you know I’ve had some experience. Now my comments. This was easily the best video I’ve seen about shooting in manual mode. Or any mode really. Well done you hit all the “side effects” clearly and efficiently.
David Miller Thank you and really appreciate the comment
Simply the best
David Miller I totally agree. I just bought my first DSLR so naturally I’m scouring CZcams for short-to the point videos. This was by far the best. Now I’m excited to shoot in manually with no experience whatsoever. Thank you.
Yeah it is pretty good.
@@HyunRalphJeong Fantastic Video mate. No job now, thanks to China. I'm thinking of getting into photography as a hobby. Not too much on my wallet, was wondering if it is good to get a Nikon D90 (body only) used with shutter count under 15k and a 35mm 1.8G prime lens to kick start. TIA
First person who doesn't waste time and knows what he is talking about!!!! Thank you so much!
Another tip: If you're a beginner and don't want to do full manual all the time (as it can take multiple adjustments and trial and error to get just one good picture) use the shutter, aperture priority modes. Almost all DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have them and it can be a very effective way to get very creative shots. You adjust the aperture/shutter speed, and the camera auto adjusts the rest. Very useful in a pinch.
This might be the single greatest tutorial for anything I've ever seen. Thank you.
As a newbie photographer, I've watched several dozen videos explaining these things and had already gotten a good general grasp of the concepts, but I have to say yours is absolutely THE BEST. The way you explained it, the way you demonstrated it, and the graphic you used on the left were all brilliant. This proves why not everyone who masters something is good at teaching it - you definitely have the gift not only for photography but for teaching. Thanks so much! I'm gonna take a print screen of your graphic and print it and keep it with me as a great reminder tool.
Agree. Definitely the best one. Direct to the point. Finally got the big picture after years of confusion lol. You should consider to open school of photography
To be honest, I understood these facts prior to watching, but this was so brilliantly explained I now feel like I could teach a class of 3 year Olds on it lol. Well done sir!
Meanwhile you can tell them they are biologically incapable of standing still. :)
Agreed. Sometimes I get things mixed up but this made it so clear
I like this unique photographer a lot. czcams.com/video/6XGETo4YxM4/video.html
This is probably the clearest and easiest explanation i've ever seen on how to shoot pictures in manual mode working with lens aperture, shutter speed and iso.
It can take long time to get a sense of how those three things together affect the final picture, but you have managed to set everything quite straight in just ten minutes . Well done!
I agree with you
Same i agree I'm glad i found this video
AGREEED!!!
I’ve watched 40 minutes of tutorials and yours is the most clear and concise
"I personally don't care what people do" - Ralph thank you for not judging me shooting on auto 😂✌
Peter and Yen Hahaha
I generally shoot in manual. But when all heck breaks loose, I have no problem slamming it to auto. Get the shot. That's what's important.
Yes. But now you have no excuse but to take the plunge. Ha ha.
yea it's all about you right?
“It could be some wild animal, it could be your children”. My children are wild animal 😂
November Muñoz Your children will remember what you said about them one day in the future. (No good saying I was only joking ) They never forget believe me 🤣
I am still shopping for my first camera for hobby use. After watching your video, I already feel ready to start playing with manual modes. You did such a great job at explaining the functions and uses of each of the 3 main camera settings. You used real terms, but you broke them down into concepts that us total amateurs can understand. Thank you for posting this!! (I know it's 4 years old, but its new to me)
You are incredibly calm and highly focused. The way you explain things is very articulate. It reminds me of the time back in school when I used to tutor my classmates. What motivates me is that the class always fills up with students. Almost all of them show up early in the morning before the regular class begins whenever I schedule a tutoring session. I must say, you are a born lecturer.
I started my journey in photography during the 9th grade, which was 15 years ago. I used to earn some money by taking pictures, mainly of students at the time. I wasn't driven by photography knowledge but by my skills in manipulating a simple camera. Since then, I've been capturing family moments and even photos of my kids. Just a day ago, I invested in a high-end camera, and now I'm eager to learn all the necessary photography skills. In this quest, I found CZcams to be a valuable resource, and I stumbled upon your videos. Well done, Hyun! You truly deserve all the likes, shares, and comments for the sake of CZcams's algorithm.
"children are biology incapable of staying still" I'm dying hahahaha I'm stealing this!
😂🤣 it's true! Nailed it! Ur best!
😀😀
"You're hands shake too because well, YOUR ALIVE" ... omg that had me rolling 😂😂😂
YOU'RE
I actually laughed out loud 😆
You’re *
🤣🤣
Love how you used actual real life results for all settings.
I would really like to thank you very much for your clear and concise explanation of how these 3 components all work together - I've never seen anything presented in such an easy-to-understand format, so I'm now feeling more confident in tackling those so I can truly get out of the auto-mode - once again, really appreciate your presentation.
"Children are biologically incapable of staying still" Couldn't say it better :)
"Children or Animals" like there's a difference 😅
Olivier Fichant Films 😂😂😂😂
🤣😁
Then why am I frozen while watching this video
That part was super funny
I am a novice photographer and have looked at many videos and read some books. Your explanation about how to shoot in manual is one of the best I have seen. So clear with your examples. You are definitely a gifted teacher as well as professional.
I'm returning to digital photography after over a decade of just using my smartphone. Learning the basic relationship between f stop, shutter speed and ISO with such good examples has really helped. I especially appreciate the reference of what full auto would do. Thank you.
I too am a new beginner to photography. I just want to say how I greatly appreciate how you explained the functions of the camera so simple. I could listen to you all day. The manual to my camera is so boring compared to you. You are truly gifted, thanks for sharing your stupendous talents with everyone.
Brilliantly explained. Probably the best video on the subject that I have seen!
Thank you! glad you enjoyed it.
I totally agree, me too
I agree
I totally agree me too! Thanks for sharing!
Agree!
I’m a complete beginner, haven’t even received my camera in the mail yet, and this video made sooo much sense to me! Really clear explanation, the diagram and side by sides helped immensely. Thank you!!
Glad I could help. Enjoy your new camera!
Absolute best explanation of Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO I've heard and I've been through a bunch. When you tell the pros and cons of each setting, it separates the 3-ways of doing light and shows that each setting, indeed, is it's own thing. Thanks!
I’ve been wanting to start photography so I’ve been looking up tons of videos on beginning tips. This absolutely was the best video I’ve come across explaining manual by far! Thank you so much for going in such great detail.
Clearest explanation I’ve seen so far. How anyone can give a thumbs down is crazy.
Thank you 👍🏻🇬🇧
I agree, amazing video. I'm a beginner photographer, just bought a Canon T7 and before this video I had no clue what the aperature or shutter speed was, and I just thought ISO was brightness. This really cleared it up for me
Unbelievable! I have been making pictures since I was 14. When I finally got a grip on it and how to use the settings the camera broke. Years later I went to school and I relearned everything 'the right way' I could just never get a clear explenation and kept mixing things up. I lost my interest for many years again but never the love. When I went to study again we had photography, and at that point I hated to listen to explenations and my camera had a lot of limitations. So because I got frustrated with digital I went back to film and loved every second of it. But because of my memory problems after a while I forget why I do settings and then forget how to balance them out. So every now and then I go online and look for clear explanations as refreshers but they only seem to make me more confused. And now I found this, I watched it and everything fell right back in to place. No more frustration ever, because I can always watch your video again, thank you so much 💕 no more feeling stupid, hell yeah
@At the veterans I was thinking exactly the same, there is zero reason for anyone giving this a down vote unless they didn't understand it but I don't know how he could have made it more straightforward.
probably the 400 youtube photographers trying to sell classes online
Brilliant explanation. It's all about quality photos and depth of field. Thank you. All the best, Cheers Rick
Actually depth of field is not everything
This is one of the best to the point explanations for a new user. You answered every question a friend asked me last night! He should be able to become a much better photographer after watching your video! You are a TRUE TEACHER of the art! Thank you!
This is an incredibly well made video, walking through the process, step by step, showing how each thing effects the shot. It makes so much more sense now! I've been fiddling around trying to learn but you have explained this perfectly.
This video was so freaking awesome. Out of the literal millions of videos on CZcams, this is my favorite one. God bless you, man.
I'm new to photography and this is by far the most helpful video I've seen yet. Others spend most of the clip explaining just aperture setting, or just shutter speed with only a cursory explanation about how one affects the other. The manner in which these settings are blended together and how they impact the others is great. Thanks!
I agree Herbee. Most that I have seen is just filled with a lot of chatter and little to no demonstrations. I loved the side screen showing the settings and how they were adjusted to get the right affect.
I agree with you. This video is amazing for people who struggle with the comprehension. I have an issue understanding some things and I've been doing photography for years and I need a diagram to help me remember things and the simple stupid of this video Is so so helpful.
FINALLY A GOOD TUTORIAL THANK YOU SO MUCH! Out of all the video tutorials on youtube, you were the only one I could find that not only explained each functionality very well but also the side effects that comes with it and I want to thank you so much for that! Making everything very clear and easy too, you're the best!
I first became interested in photography more than 40 years ago. Everything I know is self-taught. This video shows that the basics are still the same and that if you can master them you can take really impressive shots as a beginner. I've recently purchased a nifty-fifty as I've started dabbling in photography again for fun. You explain the basics much better than any instruction manual I've come across and everything came back to me in a......flash.....? Excellent video. Thank you
This was the most well-explained video on the subject that I've seen to date! You are a natural-born teacher. Thank you!!!
Than you...
"children are biologically incapable of staying still" This is thought provoking
This was the second manual mode photography tutorial that I watched and it cleared up most of the doubts that I had. Feeling very confident to start shooting manual for the first time.
Dude!! You. Are. The. MAN! I just bought my first camera, and have been extremely overwhelmed on all of the settings. I have watched hours of CZcams videos before I came across yours. This is by far the best explanation/tutorial I have found.
This is the video i have been searching for my entire life. This is what I call teaching. Man, we need teachers like you. Thank you so much!
Lmfao “no matter how expensive or no matter how good it is, you camera isn’t very smart” 💀 died at this 😆
I'm no expert (I use manual photography for my dental practice) but if CZcams could go ahead and just delete any other manual photography tutorial video would do us all a favor, because this one simply covers it and in the best way possible there's literally no need for any other.
Of all the beginner tutorials I have watched about aperture, shutter speed and ISO this is the best by far. Hats off to you. Looks simple when one watches it but it is far from it: it takes skill and that skill doesn't come easy: all the others prove that this tutorial is a challenge that you have met best otherwise all the others would be on par and they aren't. Thank you
I’ve looked at different “get out of Auto” videos and this has been the best. You didn’t just talk but you had the animated visuals and the camera with the dials that made it physically visual rather than attempting to imagine how to do it.
I've been watching content like this for several years and I still haven't been able to work this out, but now that I've seen this video - it's suddenly crystal clear. Thank-you so much for this video!
This is the best explanation I have had of manual settings and I took multiple photo classes in high school and in college! I don't know why everyone else has explained it in such confusing ways! Thank you! Loved the side-by-side examples.
I've just adopted you as my favorite teacher. You're the first one to paint a clear picture for me explaining what the settings do, how they do it, and the relationship between settings. Other people confuse the hell out of me.
I am beyond grateful for this video! I tried looking up charts and read fb photography groups and never understood the meaning and importance of these three words and why it was better to “manually” do it! Thank you a million for this!!!!!! This gave me a little more confidence!
I've been composing photos for over 50 years - and while there's nothing new here for me, I enjoy watching and listening to folks explain all this. I have to say - you are one of the best I've ever seen. Well done.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Totally agree. Incredible.
The only video that actually teaches you how to you a camera manually
I’m just starting with photography and as a new newbie, it is so hard to understand all the features you mentioned and now with your examples you provided it is now clear on how each work! Thank you!!!
Finally I understand this stuff. Thank you, you’re a natural teacher!
Sister Mary Chainsaw Haha thank you :)
I agree , brilliantly said ! Thank You !
“your hands could be moving because you’re alive”
that was my favourite line as well ;)
😅
Presumably. XD
This video is a 10/10 for learning. I just got an Olympus EP3 and I’m very new. It seems to me the goal is to keep ISO as low as possible while maintaining the amount of light you want in the picture while balancing how you want the blur. Basically I try to set ISO under 600 if possible and the mess with aperture and shutter speed in any way possible while not losing the feel of what I’m trying to capture.
Im a newbie too and I guess the hack is to first decide what shutter speed you want (which means, you gotta choose between whether you wanna capture a particular moment, where the shutter speed needs to be high, or whether you want to capture an extended time photo).
Once that's set, you select the aperture depending on the object in your focus...
And finally you select the ISO such that the photo has the minimum acceptable amount of brightness (or till the bar is 0.0)
I had read some materials on how to use a camera, but got nothing until I saw your video. This is the most useful and easiest video I’ve ever seen about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Well done!
I've been shooting since the early 60's and that is the best short explanation of the three variables of photography I've heard. Well done! In the day, we had to change film to change the ISO!
"Children are biologically incapable of staying still" 🤣🤣🤣
He's not wrong lol
I'm a parent.. this is soul level truth
hahaha loved that
Pets too. =)
It's an exciting feeling, experiencing things for the first time
This was the smoothest video I’ve seen describing all of the settings /examples using them/ how to use them.
You’re wonderful !
As someone who has wanted to start in photography a million times in my life but struggles to get past the basics, thankyou. I learnt more today than ever.
This is soooo useful!! You explain everything in such simple terms that we don't need to wing it anymore. Hahaha We're saving this video for future reference!
I have been an amateur photographer for quite a few years, read many books, and this is the very best explanation I have ever seen and the reasons behind why Using Manual on your camera is best. In a word , Brilliant.
Thanks for the explanation. I have recently starting shooting exclusively on vintage manual film cameras. This explanation was very helpful. I did not realize how much I was dependednt on the 'auto' aspects of the digital cameras until I picked up a manual and had to figure it out myself. This has helped a lot!!
Thank you!! For speaking clearly and most importantly, SLOWLY so that you are very easily understood. Also, your explanations are perfect for beginners because you are not trying to shove 30 minutes of information into a 10 minute video. And your visual examples were perfect. You are the fifth or sixth person I’ve turned to for help and now I don’t need to look any more, you are exactly what I’ve been liking for in an instructor, so thank you 🙏
Your explanation is absolutely the best!! Thank you so much! It can be so overwhelming with 40min videos but you condensed everything without lacking information
Wow. I'm absolutely astounded. I've been looking at videos and reading countless resources on this and for some reason it just wasn't clicking UNTIL I found this video. I want to thank you for a simple yet concise explanation an all three factors. I had such a hard time understanding ISO, aperture, shutter speed and how they all interacted with each other. I'm certain I'll have a much more pleasant time taking pictures now that I know exactly what each mode is for. Thank you again, this was absolutely brilliant.
I'm taking a college beginner photography class, and this video cleared up so much of my confusion! Thanks a million! I now have a page of notes that I took as I watched your video, and I will refer to those when I am doing photoshoots. Thank you!!!!
Love the sliders with icons for their effects, so clear and understandable! Easily the best explanation out there, thank you so much!
As a beginner and a visual learner this was by far the best tutorial I gave had them pleasure to watch so far . Your images are stunning !
I'm super happy that I stumbled across this video! This was INCREDIBLY helpful! I'm just getting into photography, wanted to learn how to do things manually and you explained things PERFECTLY.
Been attending youtube college for a week now trying to learn my new dlsr. This by far was the best explanation! If i watched this first it would have saved me a a bunch of time. Thanks man!
As someone who is just starting to get into photography, this was such a clear explanation of each of these settings! Great job with the examples and making it as easy to understand as possible! Now I need to practice…
I watched several videos about the subject and this is the best compromise between length and amount of information. Impressive job!
Just got a Canon M50 3 days ago and THIS VIDEO IS A LIFESAVER. Thank you very much SIR for sharing your knowledge and experience with the masses. You saved the day and the field.... lol
This was incredible. Exposure triangle was really hard for me to grasp. I love your analogy! 3 sliders that all increase brightness and have their own side effects for brightening the image. That makes it so simple to understand!!!!
This is the best, most informative video I’ve watched in years. I now understand manual mode and how to approach which settings in which order and why. Thank you for this! I’ll put this to use!
This was so useful, I loved that you used the camera as an example to show us what you were doing. Along with the tips and details on the left. Best beginner Photography tutorial on CZcams to date!
love the explanation with the graphic, make so much sense now.
I’m semi-retired, I used to take photos for my high school year book, processed and developed film in a dark room while in High School in the 70’s, and yet, after 50 year, I forgot it all. That’s right - use it or loose it! Now that I’m semi-returned, I have time to mess around with a camera again, so I bought a FujiFilm X30 just to start out with. Maybe later I’ll get something more expensive. I was very impressed with “How to Shoot Manual in 10 Minutes - Beginner Photograph Tutorial”. I know NOTHING of cameras. That’s right, you’re hearing this from a former high school yearbook photographer. So, I googled many sources, bought books and $100 video, etc, and yours was the only one that didn’t assumed I know it all, or anything for that matter. It was a great start to build upon. Very impressed with “How to Shoot Manual in 10 Minutes - Beginner Photograph Tutorial”. It certainly is a great start to build upon. One quick question, I plan to go to a library archive and reproduce documents and old year books. Is it fair to say that in photographing still documents and other photographs, I should use the higher aperture e.g., f/16 and lowest shutter speed 1/125? Thanks, again!
I recently got an instant camera which included a "manual mode", and heard it unlocked so much more creative options. I'm only just over a minute into this video, and thank you SO MUCH. I've always wondered what aperture, iso, etc etc all meant and what the implications were, and I can already tell I'm finally gonna learn. You've done this in such a brilliant way (The only difference that with my camera, the ISO is fixed depending on the film, as an actual physical property of it, I think)
I’m a newbie and did my first night shoot last night only to discover I had no idea how to control all three aspects at one time. This video was excellent in helping me to understand. Well done and thank you!
You just taught me everything I was wondering/stressing about for the past year in 12 minutes. Thank you thank you thank you, great informative video!
Watched 3 videos explaining the same subject before this one. This is the first one that made me understand. Very clearly explained, good examples and nice dissemination between different settings and how to balance them accordingly. Great watch!
THANK YOU! I have been so confused by manual mode for some time now, and this finally made it all click for me!
It takes someone with thorough knowledge of photography and clear understanding of how people see, hear with simultaneous retention in order to be concise. Masterful job sir and great examples of different photographic settings at the end.
For those who freaked out about his pronunciation of iso - From iso.org (About page) "Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form iso. Iso is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always iso."
It's a word "iso", not an acronym "I-S-O". Think isometric or isochronous. Thanks for being one of the rare CZcams influencers who get it right!
As someone who is just now getting into photography, this has been the most helpful video I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of videos of that far so thank you so much
Great basic and general explanation of these settings. Very easy to understand and helpful. Thanks for acknowledging the fact that the aperture settings are backwards from what you would assume. Helps when people call these things out to help others like myself to keep that in mind. Great video! Thanks!
Thanks for one of the clearest, if not the clearest, explanations of the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and iso that I’ve seen. I finally understand how with my camera on manual these 3 functions can be used to produce the desired results. Now I can practice and keep practicing in earnest without feeling so frustrated. Your clarity in explaining this, as well as the simplicity with which you do that, is much appreciated.
Glad I could help!
I needed a refresher after taking a break from photography for 2 years and this video was exactly what I needed. Thank you!
A must watch for beginners and pros alike. Easy and concise. The best so far and for about 12 mins? Impressive
I ama newcomer to photography and having read and watched many articles on 'the basics', this video is by far the easiest one to understand, and it will 'stick' with me forever !
Just discovered this video in preperation of getting my first camera tomorrow. I started my photography course 2 weeks ago now and I'm just getting my camera but you've explained this a lot better than what they did and i just want to thank you for that. Really looking forward to taking some great photos from tomorrow onwards
First video I've watched of yours and this is the best *TUTORIAL* on learning camera settings. I have subbed and am looking forward to your easy striaght forward teaching. Instant sub.
Looking forward to upping my car photography with these tips. I searched for years on how to and this is the best!
I’m about to start dabbling in photography and this video was great!
Helped me to understand iso, aperture and shutter speed, simply and concisely explained!
Great job!
The best explanation for me. Recently bought a mirror less camera but not sure how to use it so stuck in the auto mode. This is super helpful. Thank you and keep the good work up. Will watch again and make notes. The best on CZcams.xx
Omg!!! Thank you so much for this video. I’ve watched so many videos and was still so confused until I watch your video. Watched it once, love it. Watched it again and took notes. You broke it down and made it so easy to understand. I loved how you had the simulation on the left side, so easy to follow along and clearly understand. You are the G.O.A.T!!!!! 🙏🏽👏🏼🙌🏽
Thank you! I’ve read and watched a lot of materials on Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO but it’s only watching this video that I understood the connection between the three. I’ll be shooting better from now on!
This was the best video I’ve watched about manual yet. Thank you for making it understandable for everybody!
I’m just getting into taking photos. This has been TREMENDOUSLY helpful! Thank you so much!
One of the best beginner tutorials on youtube. Great detailed explanation on the basic functions and what to expect for each function.
i was struggling to figure out how to shoot in manual mode and this video definitely explained everything i needed to know. I was following along taking pictures with my speedlite flash on, i can say i finally figured it out.
Best video to understand manual mode, before this I had watched many videos but could not understand this completely. Now manual mode is crystal clear to me. Thanks a lot.
