    Beyond just more creative control, manual shooting makes you slow down and spend more time looking at your composition. Even if you're someone who shoots mostly in aperture priority or full p (totally valid choices just to reiterate Simon's point), manual shooting can be a great way to break yourself out of a rut

    Sometimes I reflect on what a miracle it is to have videos like this freely and readily available...
    I remember seeing this video as I was switching to manual mode, about 8 months ago, and now I've returned to see the video through a new lens. Going manual wasn't as daunting as I though, and starting with ISO in auto mode made things easier, when I wasn't very quick with the settings.

    "You guys are living on Automatic Ave. Eventually you guys will be ready to move on Manual Rd." That's what our instructors used to say to us in AIT at Ft. Meade. Then I get out of the military, everyone is telling me to use full auto, lol.

    • @Nonduality
      @Nonduality Před rokem +1

      I use full auto, but only if the values make sense. If they don't suit the scene, I make manual changes. So it's important to learn to do everything manually, but it may be possible to mostly rely on auto, depending on what you're doing.

    I learned photography in the analog era (i.e. last century ;-) when you had to decide if you'd put a Kodachrome 25, Kodachrome 64 or an Ektachrome 200 or even 400 into your camera. Relying on Auto-ISO took some unlearning learned habits and your tips to actually depend on Auto-ISO is excellent. Another habit to unlearn was maximizing the subject in the viewer and instead to accept cropping as a tool (which was possible for negative film, but not for slide film).

    Just a wonderfully simple explanation and probably the best I've come across for understanding all the elements of manual photography setting. Thanks Simon and keep this content going.

    Great video. I shoot portraits and most of the time Manual mode is my go to mode as I want full creative control, but if I'm shooting at an event like a convention where I only have a brief time with each subject, I might use Aperture Priority (AV) to make things simple and make any adjustments as necessary. One mode I love on my Canon EOS RP is the new mode they introduced called Flexible Priority (FV), in which you start in full manual, but can switch aperture, shutter speed or ISO into auto at the flick of a switch. I'm training myself how to use that more now as it seems like a good mode that gives you the best of both worlds between full manual and priority modes at the flick of a switch. I have been doing photography for about 10+ years now and helping a friend to learn the ropes with manual mode & one thing I'm teaching him is whilst having a a low ISO for best quality, it's worth knowing when to bump it up in low light to get the shot, even if it introduces some noise as it's some times better to get a shot which has some degree of noise, but is usuable rather than not getting the shot at all.
