  • My 300 WM vs 300 PRC Showdown I Greg McHale's Wild Yukon
    I’ve been shooting a Gunwerks ClymR in 300 WM for many years when chasing moose and bison. This year, I’m changing things up and am running a Gunwerks NEXUS in 300 PRC.
    The 300 WM has been around since 1963 and is a proven and effective cartridge for many applications. It is easy to find in almost any sporting shop, and most rifle manufacturers sell 300 WM rifles.

    =============================
    The 300 PRC has only been around since 2018; thus, rifles and cartridges are harder to come by than the Winchester Magnum. Developed by Hornady, the 300 PRC shines at long distances. Its sophisticated design provides fantastic accuracy at competition distances, but it could be more than you need as a hunter.
    Overall, I’m happy with my choice of the 300 PRC. With its advantages in accuracy, I think this cartridge is a great choice. However, if you’re not as focused on shooting great distances, the trusty 300 WM remains an excellent choice for large game hunting.

    If you load the 300 WM to 3.55" and shoot 200+ grain bullets, it will match the velocity and energy of the 300 PRC. The PRC only has 2 advantages over the 300 WM which are faster twist rate and longer OAL. Most rifles can be loaded long if you handload. 300 WM brass and low cost loaded cartridges end up being almost 50% the cost of 300 PRC. Why not just own both?

    I have both the .300 wm and the .300 PRC and in my case the PRC is easier to get load dev correct, and it definitely has an edge at distance, so because I load my own, I prefer the PRC over the WM. If I was limited to factory ammo I’d say they’re equal in my estimation

    Interesting that you say prc has less recoil since everyone else says it has more. I chose the 300wm due to ammo availability, cost and selection. Cant hunt with the prc if theirs no ammo. Though to bad they didnt have thier ammo up a lot more, then people would have bought it, like myself. I also dont like that they come in a neutered 24 inch barrel. Magnums need at least a 26 to get most of the powder to burn. The prc honestly doesnt add alot more over the 300wm for ethical hunting distances, so if you already have one theirs no need to jump over to it, unless if you have money to burn and just want it. Now if you target shooting long ditances and making money on matches it would be a serious contender to change over to it.

    Sorry Greg you missed the boat on this one. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Put a bullet down range faster with more powder (ejecta) and you get more recoil. End of story. Also reload your 300 WIN Mag in a rifle with a faster twist and a longer action (so you can use more powder) and you get about the same ballistics as the PRC. In that case recoil will be similar.

    If you hand load both rounds, the WM will win. The PRC has shown to run into pressures sooner than the WM. I could run a 300WM with the 215gr Bergers in the 3k FPS range. The PRC will run into pressures before that. This is not looking at loads and books to figure this out. This has been loaded on several rifles and barrel to prove this.

      If you only use Fact Ammo, your 300 WM chamber might bee a bit loose(depends on a particular rifle and ammo) Anyone shooting long range reloads their once fired/chamber formed brass, so accuracy is up to the rifle not the cartidge. Do you full length resize or neck only? One thing I don't understand is full length sizing my once fired brass. I understand that the fired brass will expand to fit the chamber. I can then bump the shoulder back .001-.002 to get a custom tight fit. I can also tailor the neck diameter as well. What I don't get is what about resizing the diameter of the case body from belt to shoulder? How do you get a "custom for your chamber" resizing in that section? Can you order specific diameter dies to match a specific chamber, or are they all standard factory diameter for the cartridge?

      @@WillyK51 I agree, if you can consistently shoot MOA (shooting 10 3 shot groups and superimposing), you are set. No need to switch. It seem like the new chamber designs just make it easier to find a true MOA factory rifle shooting factory ammo. I have a browning a bolt in 7mm rem mag that averages 1.5-2.0 MOA with factory ammo. That's OK on elk at 500, but not deer. If we limit ourselves to 500 on deer, there's certainly no need for a magnum, even a creedmoor can easily do that. A creedmoor doesn't have enough energy for elk at 500, but a 6.5 PRC would, and probably even a 270. If I shoot a 7 mag, I want to be able to use it to its full long range potential past 500. The problem is, accuracy becomes the limiting factor in my case. If I could get mine to shoot MOA (consistently) I would be thrilled and keep it. Its fine as an elk rifle, but I use it for deer and bear as well.

    Sheep hunters dream for sure!!!
    Also, the so said great 300 PRC is what it was made for long range 1000 yards, 26" barrel to burn all that powder. I have yet to see you shoot anything over 500 yards.
    So just do the math, hunters fall into this BS under normal hunting conditions shooting less than 500 yards far better off shooting a liter bullet.
    Has less recoil, higher velocity which helps it carry the same energy out to 500 yards as your heavy high BC bullets.
    My opinion, it's not ethical to be shooting an animal at 1000 yards anyway to many variables.
