Verbs Like Gustar

  • This week's Spanish Quickie is a bit different. You'll still learn some vocab and grammar--it's just a little more theoretical than normal.
    In order to understand why "me gusta" is so weird (it's how you say "I like"--not "gusto") -- you first have to understand how the dictionary works.
    That might sound silly to you. But to be completely honest, I didn't know until very recently.
    I wish somebody taught me this a long time ago. It woulda saved me tons of time, energy and embarassing moments.
    But my pain, is your gain.
    Let me know if you have any questions. This video took me longer than normal to make. I rewrote it three times!

    It helps to think of "gustar" as the opposite of "disgustar," or the English "to disgust." I've found it easy to remember because of the negative prefix. You don't disgust a piece of moldy bread, but the bread disgusts you, so you are disgusted by it. Basically all gustar is.

      @@elspanishdude I found this video very helpful, but I have a question: When using the verb gustar, why does the subject (the thing that is pleasing) go after the conjugated form of gustar and not before? For example, why does "comer" go after "gusta" in "Me gusta comer" if "comer" is the subject that is pleasing? Why isn't it "Comer me gusta."? Again, thanks for these videos!

    Velocity is speed in a direction so it is relative to a position and so it can be a negative value. Speed is the absolute value of velocity. It is speed without a direction and so it is always positive. Both are a rate of distance traveled over a period of time.

      ChancePance Gracias amigo! So when you're going backward velocity is negative? But speed is always positive?

    • @chancepance995
      @chancepance995 Před 9 lety

      Gringo Español Correct. Acceleration works the same way. As long as they object is moving back toward a previously occupied position on the same vector path, both the velocity and the acceleration would be negative, and the speed would be positive as you can't have a negative speed. That would be like having a negative distance.
      Thanks for all of the great videos!

    Thanks a million for these videos. They are helping me a lot in learning Spanish. This may not mean much for this video, but coming from an engineering background and to share some physics knowledge with you guys, the difference between Velocity and Speed is Velocity is a "vector quantity" meaning it has both magnitude and direction while Speed only has Magnitude. So while they might have the same units (m/sec for example) when Velocity of an object = 100 m/sec it mean velocity has a magnitude of 100 in a particular direction (whatever that direction is) but when Speed of and object = 100 m/sec it means the speed has a magnitude of 100 and but does not take into account the direction. That's probably why Momentum = mass x velocity (and not mass x speed) because moving objects have momentum, but however only have it in the particular direction they are moving in.... i think lol..
    But again, keep up the good work and thanks again for the help.
    Saludos desde Trinidad y Tobago!!

    Oh, and speed versus velocity? Speed is a "scalar" - you just need a single number to define it - the number of miles (eg) you travel in some time (an hour), for example.
    Velocity is a vctor - you need two numbers to define it - a speed (mph) and a direction (North). So - consider 2 cars. One driving 10mph North and the other 10 mph South. Both have the same speed (10 mph) but they have differewnt velocities as their directions are different. Just in case anyone cares.

  • @kevinlong3338
    @kevinlong3338 Před 9 lety +1

    Just FYI, the difference between speed and velocity in English is that speed is a scalar quantity while velocity is a vector. That means is that velocity can be negative, but speed cannot. There is a little more to it than that but that but that should suffice for a CZcams comment.

    If we take physics into account then "speed" means "velocity" (as the formula for both of them is distance/time) and "velocity" means "rapidez"
    But of course that usually doesn't matter

      +carolina potterhead thanks. i was wondering how that worked. seems like it would cause a bunch of issues if both speed and velocity had the same word. =)

    The difference between speed and velocity is that velocity includes direction.

      in spanish though speed also includes direction, they just don't know which direction.
