Reflexive Verbs in Spanish

- Reflexive verbs are a little weird in Spanish. Not hard. Just weird.
Do you even know what a reflexive verb is?
Yeah, neither did I.
We don't use them that much in English.
And that's the problem.
Most Spanish courses and books don't specifically compare what happens in Spanish to what happens in English.
But that's how we learn... CONTEXT!
How does this fit with what I already know?
The goal of this video is simple, show you:
1. What reflexive verbs are
2. How and when to use them in both English and Spanish
Along the way, you'll see how they compare to direct and indirect object pronouns (the last two videos).
There are lots of similarities (and lots of differences). Thus, the confusion.
BONUS: The word "se" in Spanish is very confusing because it has many different uses and meanings. This video touches on one of them.
When you're done with this video, not only will you finally understand reflexive verbs and how to use them, but you'll be one step closer to understanding that crazy word "se"!
Watch the video. Maybe twice. You'll get it. I swear.
And I'm here for questions, of course.
Hasta luego!
Jordan

this 10 minute video helped me understand better than an 8 week course can...
Awesome! Glad to hear it, Nat!
es verdad
I thought about taking a Spanish course, well, nevermind now, thank you jaja!
lol same
I'm Spanish and I watch this videos to improve my english.
Diego Pozas *these
Diego Pozas where are u from are you from Spain u have t if you are spanish
I hate your language
English should be capitalized.
@@xboydubose7254 it doesn't matter that much though
I'm a native speaker of Spanish but I never realized how much we use these verbs. I'd have never imagined this was difficult to understand for Spanish students.
awwww, It can be quite hard to use
"a reflexive verb is a normal verb, but when the subject and the receiver of the action are the same" - my Spanish teacher didn't mention this once, and I couldn't understand what the hell these new verbs were that seemed to be so similar to standard verbs but with a different ending. Jeeeeeeeeeez.
These videos are awesome, I'm ploughing through them after each one of my 1-to-1 lessons to actually understand what it is I was supposed to have been taught in them. I've also told my teacher to watch them, and to give them as homework to her other students. Keep up the great work Jordan!
Yeah, it is crazy how different formal teaching and conversational teaching really is. Some academics have their heads so far up their fourth point of contact that they are a bit removed from the needs of actual people to be successful more than their need to feel like they are teaching a strict cirriculum.
@@joshuacameron5922 😂😂 "... fourth point of contact..." Literally, never heard this before. Most amusing🤭. P.s. Thanks for the video(s)
Please don’t cuss
I have been wondering for MONTHS how to say "I wonder" and wondering why it's "me pregunto" you'd think I would have figured it out by now!!!
This video, just all the little parts and information, and this channel in general, has helped me so much in 15 minutes!! Honestly, you have NO IDEA. Years of learning Spanish perfectly summed up on this channel. LOVE IT.
Honest to God I took 8 years of Spanish classes in high school and college and am taking another for professional purposes, and this has taught me more than all the courses thus far! I've always had such a hard time with reflexives and especially reflexives and indirect object pronouns, but I'm finally starting to understand! I agree with a commenter on another video; native speakers don't always make the best teachers when describing grammatical rules. These rules aren't intuitive to English speakers and so it's very helpful having an English speaker explain them so I can break them down logically. Spanish speakers don't have to break down their own rules to explain their speech, so I think it's hard for them to convey them clearly.
WOW. Thank you! I have been struggling for months with reflexives mainly because I also avoided to actually learn them because they seemed complex. You have explained this subject so easily for me and many others to understand. Ahora necesito ver todos tus otros videos!
OMG! The best explanation I've heard, it's so amazing when it clicks and you finally get it. I don't think my Spanish teacher could explain it so clearly.
I love you. I've been speaking Spanish over 10 years and you finally made it clear to me.
I have taken so many Spanish courses, none of which favourably compare to these learning videos. Jordan, you are a Spanish Life Saver!! Thank you
You're really good. I've been learning spanish for years and the specifics of when to use "se llama" and "le llama" have had me in knots. Even my Spanish girlfriend couldn't tell me for sure which to use on occasion! But now, I think I've finally got it! When she calls herself it's "se llama" but when she calls another "him" or "her" it's "le llama"
ive watched probably half of your videos (i watch them based on what i learned in class that day). i just started watching this year and i can say that my comprehension of spanish has increased greatly. so in short...thank you!
+grant decapua Awesome! Thank you so much. I love to hear this. I don't say it enough in the older videos. I would never have been able to keep going this long without reading messages like yours. GRACIAS. Good luck with the Spanish!
Why is it the tiny words in Spanish that cause the most trouble? 'Se' and 'a' are driving me crazy. I hope I can get them eventually. Thanks for the video!
I'm studying english right now and I might help you in spanish doubts. Let me know if you're interested on it. I'm from Colombia hence I'm a native speaker. Greetings.
der -K hi
Most problems like these stem from a lack of memorable qualities to the word Which leads to easy confusion
Best videos on learning Spanish I've come across yet. Thanks for making even the hardest topics fun and understandable!
I thought I was the only one to whom this concept really confused. You are right. I couldn't find anyone else who could clear up the simple fact that reflexive words are not used as much in English. Thank you for clearing up the most confusing thing I've ever encountered in Spanish thus far!!
This is brilliantly communicated. Thank you! Plus I really love the way you jump cut the edits to make it all go faster. I wish everything in my life was like that.
Very fast and clear. thanks.
+Deborah D. Elliott Thank you!
Thank you so much youre the best spanish teacher ive ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anna Chiara Wayne My pleasure! Thank you! Really nice to hear that. Thanks for the message. New videos are being posted most weeks.
Hola Jordan! Thank you so much for your Spanish Quickies! Your videos are SUPER helpful! I have watched most of them and this one is my favorite! I am going to study abroad in Spain and I have been brushing up so i don't feel insecure when talking. You are the best! Can't thank you enough!
My mind was literally blown when you said "me pregunto". Your explanation give me a clearer understand, but then you said "me pregunto" I literally screamed in apprehension.. Amazing!!!!!!!! Gracias para tu explanación. Lo me ayuda mucho.
Se is everywhere! I didn't know what that was! Thanks Jorge! I've been studying for almost 2 weeks. The reflexive, direct and indirect still confuse but im starting to understand it all! I almost gave up just because of that. Gracias ❤
Perfectly discussed!! I've been having problems dealing with Spanish Reflexive verbs but this answers clears all of my confusions. Gracias!
thank you for making Spanish so much easier to understand. I can always count on you to for an easy explanation.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience on understanding reflexive verbs. 👍🏻
Man, you're awesome! Thank you so much for your very educational and easy-to-grasp videos!
I just found this and absolutely loved you! This is so good! I am Spanish and I teach Spanish and this is a total nightmare to explain to students. It's probably been so difficult because I didn't understand completely how it is sooo different to English and used sooo much more as you said. Now I understand better my students and hopefully this will help me to explain reflexive verbs to them. Thank you! I will recommend them to watch your videos lol
I have a test tomorrow and this just cleared everything up for me. Thank You!!!!
I'm a High School Spanish Teacher. I love your videos. I have my students watch them frequently. Great content!
I love you. I really do. This was one thing that i never understood. Now it's all clear. Thank you so much xxx
This is so useful. The apps, and just listening to Spanish and looking up words do not teach "why" and my grammer would never improve without this.
I can't express how helpful this is. Thank you so much!!! :)
You are so helpful! I have been having such a difficult time in my online Spanish class for my degree. Your videos are saving me!
Love Spain and Spanish so much but reflexive verbs constantly have me in tears because I just can't wrap my head around it
I have been struggling with reflexive verbs. HOW DID I NOT REALIZE ME LLAMO IS REFLEXIVE. Having that as a reference makes it all seems so clear now! Ty
Thank you so much on that video it helped me understand it more... but I couldn't find the video of where and when I should use esto, esta, estas, and estamos. Thanks again
So great to have found your videos! I hope God continues to bless you greatly!
Just found this vid. Love it. Love the style love the speed love the quality.
No puedo creer que djiiste "I sit myself" tantas veces sin riendo! Absolute genius.
OMG I just stumbled across your channel and I LOVE IT. You have a new religious watcher. I am in Spain, soon to be Peru, learning Spanish by immersion (never taken a class) and good lord reflexive verbs are blowing my mind. This video really helped!! Thank you so much for sharing your passion for language, now excuse me while I go on a watching spree!
Absolutely wonderful! I think I'll study this many times over. Thanks for sharing!
Gina Simons My pleasure. Glad you found it helpful.
I'm a 100+ hours into a 600hr spanish course and your video just cleared up so much! Thank you
I love to hear it. So glad I can help you. Thank you for this message.
I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video.
Thanks man, these videos are great. Please keep them up! Thanks
Thanks for breaking this down. Love your videos!
It is so interesting to watch this, see how gringos analyze spanish and make rules to understand how our conjugation, grammar, etc work. Same way as english is taught to us, but I gotta say, spanish has A WHOLE LOT of extra and harder rules. For me, It's also kind of a narcissistic exercise to enjoy this.
You got yourself a new spanish speaker subscriber!
Dagoberto Ignacio Garcés Lavado honestly though, i think english is a lot harder to learn just because there are a ton of grammatical things that aren’t logical nor follow any solid rules
The rules were established by Spanish speakers. English folk merely label the grammar and conjugation accordingly.
This 10 minute video helped more than 6 hours of studying and practicing my book.
I think this guy has the easiest to comprehend videos. Very impressed.
Wow! this explanations are really interesting, you can show clearly the way of thinking is different between English and Spanish speakers.
Thank you, I will download the worksheet....I live in Madrid now...from the US. Man I really want to learn this language
Thanks G, I got a midterm soon for Spanish and this is really helping me out!
Si quieren aprender español de verdad es muy bueno este joven! recomendado 100%!
7:13 “hot tip” alert 🔥. I was wondering about that, tnx👍👍
VERY helpful! I think I learn more from your videos than I do from my college Spanish class!
This 10 minute video cleared up a week long unit of my high school Spanish class
I LOVE the pace of these videos. Lots of info, repetition and doesn't take the rest of my life. I have adult ADHD (or I'm just busier than not). Thank you for your time!
Your vid made me remember when they taught this in elementary I literally couldn't understand it and I already spoke Spanish (I'm Mexican I've always live in Mexico). :-D

Gringo, me pasa lo mismo con el inglès; lo amo.
La parte donde dices que blew away con "me pregunto", me pasa OFFER, con palabras en inglès de ese tipo.
Me quedo enamorado por la complejidad y la lògica del idioma.
Thanks for explaining excessive use of reflexive. Making more sense
That was really clear. Thank you
This is a great video, thank you!
I watch your video when i'm free now, it's so helpful! and i even understand French better!
That's so cool! Is French your native language or another language you speak or are learning?
I was in my living room watching this, when he said "I sit myself" my whole family busted up
Yeah, that's funny lol. Ahahahahahahahah
Awesome explanation. Thanks
Dude! 🤯 I’m not sure if you explained that amazingly well, probably, or after 5 years of studying Spanish I was finally ready to hear it but holy guacamole, by George, I think I got it! Thanks for that. Wish you talked a little bit slower but I can pause and go back. Otherwise, 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Very helpful video! muchas gracias!
6:25 I sit my self lol
Yeah, that's funny. I don't remember if I knew it sounded like that when I was saying it. But it sure does now.
Thank you! I felt like I was the only one giggling at that statement...
When you’re taking an online Spanish course… which basically has you try to learn these concepts with a bare ass book. Thank GOD people like you are out here actually making this crap make sense. Muchas gracias amigo.
As a Spaniard I have to say that you explained it very well. I just dont think how to use them when I speak, it just get out from my mouth in an unconscious way, but I guess it has to be hard to think at it when it s not your mother tongue. It just like the German language, which I am studying, and I have to think how to decline every word according the case.
It is hard indeed... It's all subjective to the individual, but this whole reflexive verb thing is tough for me 😂. I'll get it though! I know I will.
This man is the Robinhood of Spanish. 20 year. 20 years I have paid all that money. I come across these videos and I get a light bulb moment. As an adult. You can’t not take Spanish from a native speaker. You need someone like the Spanish Dude to explain how it works. Because he knows what your thinking.
thank you so much for your videos.
omg, you speak better Spanish than lots of native speakers, including myself sometimes 😂😂. Your videos are great. :D
Thank you! You're helping me!
Thanks for the video, this is sooo helpful
I swear this is the most helpful spanish learning channel ive ever found. I understand it very well tho my native language is not english 🤣
gotta support this guy, he´s amazing
So helpful. I love you.
Hey I want to say thank you I've a test this next day from when I'm saying this And I was under a lot of pressure and this cleared it all out for me thank you definitely subscribing !
+Daragh Goode Awesome. Glad this video helped you! Happy you found me. This video is actually part of a series of videos. Direct object pronouns, indirect, double, this one, and verbs like gustar (those go together basically). You can see them all here: gringoespanol.com/quickie-category/pronouns
+Gringo Español This may be a stupid question, but how would you make a reflexive verb in the Yo form past tense? Thank you for your videos they are a great help! (:
Finally. This was killing me. I binged watched to get here. Thank you.
loved the video! But wow the music at the end blew my eardrums with headphones.
"I sit myself", focking savage
¡Gracias Maestro Jordan!
you saved mucho dinero on books......5 stars for you dude!!!!
