Reflexive Verbs in Spanish

  • Reflexive verbs are a little weird in Spanish. Not hard. Just weird.
Do you even know what a reflexive verb is?
    Yeah, neither did I.
We don't use them that much in English.
    And that's the problem.
Most Spanish courses and books don't specifically compare what happens in Spanish to what happens in English.
But that's how we learn... CONTEXT!
How does this fit with what I already know?
The goal of this video is simple, show you:
    1. What reflexive verbs are
    2. How and when to use them in both English and Spanish
Along the way, you'll see how they compare to direct and indirect object pronouns (the last two videos).
There are lots of similarities (and lots of differences). Thus, the confusion.
BONUS: The word "se" in Spanish is very confusing because it has many different uses and meanings. This video touches on one of them.
When you're done with this video, not only will you finally understand reflexive verbs and how to use them, but you'll be one step closer to understanding that crazy word "se"!
Watch the video. Maybe twice. You'll get it. I swear.
And I'm here for questions, of course.
    Hasta luego!

"a reflexive verb is a normal verb, but when the subject and the receiver of the action are the same" - my Spanish teacher didn't mention this once, and I couldn't understand what the hell these new verbs were that seemed to be so similar to standard verbs but with a different ending. Jeeeeeeeeeez.
These videos are awesome, I'm ploughing through them after each one of my 1-to-1 lessons to actually understand what it is I was supposed to have been taught in them. I've also told my teacher to watch them, and to give them as homework to her other students. Keep up the great work Jordan!

Yeah, it is crazy how different formal teaching and conversational teaching really is. Some academics have their heads so far up their fourth point of contact that they are a bit removed from the needs of actual people to be successful more than their need to feel like they are teaching a strict cirriculum.

Honest to God I took 8 years of Spanish classes in high school and college and am taking another for professional purposes, and this has taught me more than all the courses thus far! I've always had such a hard time with reflexives and especially reflexives and indirect object pronouns, but I'm finally starting to understand! I agree with a commenter on another video; native speakers don't always make the best teachers when describing grammatical rules. These rules aren't intuitive to English speakers and so it's very helpful having an English speaker explain them so I can break them down logically. Spanish speakers don't have to break down their own rules to explain their speech, so I think it's hard for them to convey them clearly.

It is so interesting to watch this, see how gringos analyze spanish and make rules to understand how our conjugation, grammar, etc work. Same way as english is taught to us, but I gotta say, spanish has A WHOLE LOT of extra and harder rules. For me, It's also kind of a narcissistic exercise to enjoy this.
