      I remember that sometimes I pump hard and, at the end, I pop up just for a second and, immediately, I loose the flight. I hesitate about what to do in this critical moment, because I feel I have not enough speed to sustain the flight.

  • @png6ud
    @png6ud Před 3 lety

    Thank you for a great video. Looking forward to coming episodes. I'm struggling with speed. I never go faster than 20 knots, doesn't matter the conditions or sail size. An episode about how to go fast would be nice! Both equipment and techniques. I'm on a starboard gtr (85cm mast, 95 fuselage, 800 front wing and 355 back wing). I've already placed an order for a longer fuselage and smaller back wing which I was recommended. Hope it helps 😊

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety +2

      Yep, longer fuselage will give you more stability and smaller backwing more speed.
      For max speed you should go quite deep downwind, have long harness lines and u need a lot of wind

    Thanks a lot for the foil pumping video. I really appreciate it. How about an iQFOIL tuning specific video? Adjustable outhauls, adjustable downhauls, adjustable harness lines, how to rig all of it, when to use the short fuselage, when to use the fin, which tail wing spacers to use when, should I use a back footstrap, how to depower a 9.0 in 25 knots, and whatever else you have learned. Thank you!

  • @jonathanepstein948
    @jonathanepstein948 Před 3 lety

    Thank you - so helpful. I was working toward these techniques today and the most helpful shift for me was the thought of unweighting the foil at the end of the pump, as if with a little jump, as you describe around 5:50 and 7:08. I reminds me of the up-unweight move when initiating a turn skiing or snowboarding. Anyhow, I was foiling up much quicker today! Next topic - working upwind on low-aspect foils? The extreme heel to windward that the racers use doesn't seem to work as well on big wings like i84

    Thank you! I have had to revisit this since I got an IQfoil. Still trying to judge when I can get pressure on the back foot, but much easier on the hybrid fin/foil board that I was using.

    • @patricks1251
      @patricks1251 Před 3 lety

      I found it easier to get foiling with 0.5+ shim and mast foot forward than 1+ shim and mast foot back... In theory the later should be alot better for lift

    • @aeroegnr
      @aeroegnr Před 3 lety

      @@patricks1251 From what I've tried, I agree with the mast foot. It doesn't feel as easy to pump when you move it backward. I'll have to try the +1 or +0.5 again sometime, as I usually stick with the zero and get going in pretty light stuff by just pumping like a maniac.

      wind speed around 5-8 knots

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety +3

      Yep, I wasn't measuring but I think 5-8. Keep in mind that the temperature was around 10 degrees so the wind is significantly more dense than let's say at 20 degrees.

    • @extremescene
      @extremescene Před 3 lety

      @@RYTISJAS did my imagine air density (pressure?) Actually affects windsurfing.. super interesting.

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety +4

      Yes, the air density affects windsurfing a lot. I can get planing in 5-6 knots when it is 4 degrees relatively easily, while in 30 degrees I need at least 7 or more I would say.
      Same holds for strong wind in low temperatures it is much harder to handle the same windspeed as compared to warm temperatures

    Really like your videos covering many things missed in others :) . Would it be possible to cover your insight and learnings on stab angle in different windconditions? You mentioned I think in one of the vlogs from garda that you tried +1 or +1.5 shim. Does the iqfoil have - 2degree stab making the angle therefore around -1 to - 0.5?

  • @TheLindsay720
    @TheLindsay720 Před 3 lety +1

    Great video! One question, however: I find that when I pump really hard, I have trouble maintaining steering and end up going too far downwind. Are there any tips for avoiding that or is it an uncommon problem or do I just need more practice? Cheers!

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety +1

      Good question!
      Steering while pumping is a combination of feet placement and sail movement.
      If you end up going too far downwind try placing your feet more towards the windward rail (if possible) and moving backwards and to the windward rail earlier this should make you turn more upwind.

    • @TheLindsay720
      @TheLindsay720 Před 3 lety

      Thanks very much! Keen to give it a try.

  • @dengordo
    @dengordo Před 3 lety

    Thank you for the great explanation. What was the wind speed? I'm however having an issue sometimes when pumping in light wind that when I pull the sail towards me there is not enough wind force to push it back away from me and I end falling in to my back with the sail on top of me...

    • @extremescene
      @extremescene Před 3 lety +1

      Ha sounds familiar, I wonder also should you be hooked up in the harness when pumping?

    • @dengordo
      @dengordo Před 3 lety +1

      @@extremescene No you shouldn't. You won't be able to have full range of motion in this case. Unless you have enough wind to get planing without excessive pumping.

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety +6

      The wind was somewhere around 5-8 knots.
      Sounds like you are starting to do a big motion right away...
      Try starting with really small, circular movements with the sail and then build up to bigger range of motion.

    Hi Rytis!
    I see you often use duetone sails. Would your recommendation the the e-type (non-cam) for general freeride blasting and also foiling?

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety

      Yes - the new E- Type is a perfect freeride sail. You put on less downhaul and you go foiling, the wind increases - the you take a fin , put on more downhaul and go blasting. perfect

    Could you as well make a video how to pump without foil, to get going? Maybe as a useful addition to your freeride series.

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety

      Great suggestion!
      The basics of sail movement and the principle of pushing the board forward stays the same.
      The reason I have not done it yet, is that I believe most people who sail on freeride gear prefer getting planning the lazy way - hooked in the harness and even if they would try to pump the 'real' way it is often hard to do with small fins. Thus it is a much more intricate affair.... to which I am not sure if it is possible to provide a good solution that fits most sailors...

  • @typhoontan7193
    @typhoontan7193 Před 2 lety

    Whenever I put more pressure towards the back of the board during a pump the board keeps pointing upwind, is that why a circular pumping motion is needed?

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 2 lety

      You need to make sure that you press forward and downwind with the front foot mainly. But the circular motion helps a touch too.

  • @shmish
    @shmish Před 3 lety

    Can you clarify what you mean by “pulling the sail back towards the board at a 45 degree angle”? If the board is pointing to 3 o’clock, does this mean we pull the sail to 4:30?

    • @RYTISJAS
      @RYTISJAS  Před 3 lety

      Yes, exactly. The main point is that you are not moving the sail at 90 degree angle to the centerline of the board. But you pull it slightly backwards and then return it forward with a circular motion
