- Does it get any more iconic than this? 2018 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE vs. Ford Mustang GT Performance Pack. Both cost about $50K, both have excellent, naturally-aspirated V8 engines paired with 6-speed manual transmissions, and both have track-inspired performance upgrades. Oh, and did I mention that it's a Camaro SS battling a Mustang GT? C'mon, it doesn't get any better than this!
So, does the less extreme Mustang Performance Pack 1 (not the crazier Performance Pack 2, which was unavailable for testing) have what takes to keep up with the Chevy? One way to find out...

As a lifelong Mustang owner, I drove a 6th Gen Camaro 1LE knew instantly that it was hands down better than any Mustang I’ve driven, including the mighty Shelby. Nothing drove cars so well in all performance metrics for so little money.The Mustang is old school and drives old school. As a road/track car, the 1LE is the cats meow.
Liar a shelby cobra is 10x the car any Chevy will be, and I own a corvette.

@@officialtjtrev8910 it's not faster in the 8th or the quarter. Almost every test I've seen has the camaro running a 12.3-12.4 and the mustang 12.5-12.6. Basically it would be determined by the driver. From what I've seen the camaro is better driving, but the mustang is more practical for day to day driving because of the view. I'm going to drive both this weekend, so we'll see how it goes.

Why all of the negativity? He gave his honest opinion as he saw it. But i have watched and read multiple videos on this comparison and the PP1 loses every time and i doubt if the PP2 will fare much better. Truth be told, as we speak, GM stands as one of the greatest chassis/suspension/drivetrain engineers of recent decades. Especially for the price and what you get.

@@imbrandon16 no, it is not, and it is not even close. The 1LE runs CIRCLES around the mustang around a racetrack. The 1LE is MADE for the road course. It is not a 1/4 mile car. The standard SS however is a 1/4 mile car and the cars are virtually dead even. The camaro runs a 12.1 stock and the 5.0 runs a 12.2 stock. Its a drivers race. The 1LE however and the pp1 /pp2 are ment for the roadcourse and the mustang just cant hang

@@bmwmike3534 Drag racing of course, I know the 1LE is a bad mother fucker on a circuit type track however in a straight line i've heard its slightly slower than the base 1SS/2SS, I was never really into circuit type racing until I bought an NB Miata and found out just how fun hauling ass through curves is XD not like on my CBR1000 Where i'm white knuckled and thinking any corner could be the one that kills me XD

I drove a PP1 and a PP2 Mustang. I almost bought the PP2. It was impressive. I ended up buying a 2018 Camaro 2SS 1LE. I’m really glad I bought it. It’s a beast of a car. It drives a lot better to me. It’s also an easier car to drive at the track.
This guy deserves a check from Chevy for real. His reaction towards the camero is priceless and it only makes me love my 2ss more and more

Just bought a 2021 SS 1LE 2 weeks ago. Absolutely love it! Sold my 21-challenger scat pack, I loved that car too, really nice riding and fast. The Camaro is just a different car altogether really, the handling is incredible, so is the speed and power. Biggest difference is the ability to hook up on takeoff, the Camaro flies, sounds awesome too. My cousin has a Mustang GT pp1 and it's an awesome car too. So little difference, just buy the one you like the best. Neither is better than the other. If anything, we should all feel blessed to even be able to have such cars.
Just found your video today and enjoyed it, but I am a Chevy guy so your enthusiasm for the Camaro wasn't as bothersome to me :) I am buying a 2019 SS1LE in the Spring and look forward to driving the wheels off of it. I'm guessing this was a test of the 2SS1LE at that price point. The 1SS1LE can be found for sub $44,000.00 and is a huge bargain for such an incredible sports car. Keep the rubber side down.
I was able to get my 2SS 1LE for $38k USD. You can get them for a lot cheaper if you wait near the end of the year!

It appears that while Ford concentrated on making the Mustang's exhaust very loud, GM concentrated on the Camaro's handling and overall performance, which is why the Camaro SS 1LE continues to dominate the Mustang GT, PP1 and PP2.
I was told that corsa made the cat back system for GM on the ss camaros and corvettes.
Then why is it being discontinued again if its doing so well?

I test drove both cars. Ended up getting a 17' SS Camaro 6 speed stick. That was 33k miles ago. Its my Daily Driver...I love driving that car.🤤😛 Chevy is running the America made Tremec 6060 trans🥴. Ford running the Chinese made Getrag transmission🤢. Shame on you Ford!😱😩
I was reading through to see if anyone would mention this. I’m a Ford guy in general and daily drive a lightly modded 19 GT premium with the 10A and PP1. It’s my 30th Mustang and I’d be the first to say that the MT82 is JUNK ! There’s a reason Ford had the Tremec in the GT350 and now the new Mach I.
It’s like when Chevy went from the 4L80 to the 10 speed. Chevy got the track handling spot on as well. My preference is the Stang, but that Camaro is certainly no joke, especially on a track where the 1LE package bruises egos !

To the Mustangs credit...my understanding is the Mustang will pull on the Camaro in a 1/2 mile race do to its 7500 RPM opposed to Camaros 6200 RPM. 🤔

I test drove that exact Camaro yesterday. I was on the fence…I don’t need it, but NA V8 MT muscle cars aren’t going to be around forever. Your reactions to driving the Camaro sold me. Might as well have the pinnacle.
Even a few years down the road, this video and the SS 1LE are one of the vehicles I get asked about/talk about the most. It's just so damn good.
Why are there so many Ford fanboys complaining in these comments. As someone who is not a brand follower, the Mustang is what actually drew my attention to the pony cars. It's a better looking vehicle and easier to live with, for sure. But as far as a legitimate sports car, there's no comparison. That's why Chevy won me over and I am now a 1LE owner. Don't complain here, go complain to Ford to build a better Mustang.

Ford Performance Pack 1 is a step behind the Camaro SS with Magnaride, the Ford Performance pack 2 is a step behind the Camaro SS 1LE in my opinion. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Recently test drove a 2020 mustang gt stripped out interior for with pp1 for 44k. Got my 2019 2ss 1le ss fully loaded discounted for 43k. Absolute steal and It’s sooo much better than the mustang.

Chevy got it right first time out of the box. Ford pee pee'd a few times to catch up, but at least they sounded good.

Because the 7/8 scale that team Camaro brought the car in at to save weight really compromised the utility of the car. Windows got smashed even more than the previous generation and interior is still an absolute wreck regardless of what his guy says. An S550 or Challenger is a much more friendly daily driver. Then there is the looks of the car. The Ford and the Mopar just look much better. The Camaro looks like what i would have picked to drive to prom when I was 16.
They are giving away Mustangs and Challengers with great deals. Try to make a deal on a Camaro, forget it. They will not even tint the windows for free. However, I love my 2019 2SS automatic. The Mustangs and Challengers I have raced have all been easily beaten. I adore my Camaro. It’s a great daily driver too. It rides just as good as my Mercedes C-Class. You cannot beat this car. Get one for yourself and be king of the road. Side note, I beat a Z06, but only because it had too much power and could not get his wheels to stick. He was all over the road.
Todd is very very wrong. I thoroughly test drove all three for 2 weeks before making my decision. The Camaro was the clear winner in every aspect.
@@ChaosAttractor13 No. I'm actually not. I am very very familiar with both of the current platforms. I also drove both the Camaro and the Mustang extensively before I purchased. The Mopar was not driven because of prior expirience with quality problems with a Jeep. The Camaro is an ergonomic mess for anyone of size. Granted I am a larger person than most at 6' 4" and 200 lbs+ but even journalists of average size come full circle once they get done praising the chassis. GM forgot that a person gets in this thing and operates it. As a far as style goes...well that's opinion but here is a fact. The mustang has by far the largest aftermarket for both the vehicle and the Coyote motor. Sites such as CJPonyParts, LMR and AmericanMuscle all cater to the 3 current muscle cars. The mustang is over 75% of their business. There is one other thing that most tests fail to point out although he mentions it here... that is one of the main performance points to be clear about every time they test a 1LE. The car has 12"+ wide rear tires and 10 1/2" wide front tires and track compound. Most supercars do not put this much rubber to the ground. Of coarse this car is going to turn and stop like a monster. There is a lot of good about the Camaro but there is to much bad and consumers are voting with their purchases. If GM does not solve this problem soon we will have another Camaro death. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THAT. But I'm telling you...they have to get serious about making a car that men can comfortably drive and see out of and has a decent interior and they are going to have to hit upon a decent styling theme because what they have right now is just not working.
Camaro brakes are much larger? The 1le brakes are 14.6in vs the mustangs 15in brakes. Do the camaro brakes really feel that much better?
Brakes are only as good as the tires, which the camaro has much more of
The Camaro had 6-piston Monoblock Brembos up front and 4-piston Bembos in the back. The Mustang PP1 only gets 4-piston Brembos up front. The Camaro has **WAY** better brakes. These are the same brakes that you find on a ZL1 1LE.
@@GrimSRT8 PP1 also get 6-piston brembos, with larger rotors. The mustang has better brakes.
@@phoenix6064 OK you’re correct the Mustang gets Brembo front brakes. Now go compare stopping distance from any magazine. I don’t have the time to research it now, but the Camaro brakes are superior. The stopping distances are shorter. The Camaro is the better car for performance driving period, unless you buy a Mach-1 with the handling package.
This is coming from a “Ford guy” who sold his Focus RS and got the Camaro 1LE. The Mustang just doesn’t offer nearly the performance for the money. There is really no comparison. I understand that the Mustang might be the better daily driver, but the Challenger is even better in that role. I wanted the top performing car I could buy for $50K, and the SS 1LE is unbeatable at that price point.
@@GrimSRT8 Tires, CG, suspension geometry, and ABS dictate stopping distance. I own both cars, and I would say the camaro has better CG and better stock pads. With the same pads, and same tires, the mustang brakes stop better for longer. Can't beat the physics of larger rotors.

Okay, Motor Trend one of the most respected, authentic car magazines, and automobile afficianidos on the planet tested the GT PP1 and 2 against the SS 1LE.. I ltruly love both cars.. However, the Mustang top end was faster in a mile race, sounded better, and had better interior. But still was not faster 0 to 60, or in the quarter mile, the SS 1LE time on the track at Willow Springs.. or handled better than the SS 1LE .It was light years better than the PP1 but the Camaro SS 1LE got the slight edge until further testing they announced..
There is nothing better than hearing the sound of rumble exhaust, driving a normally aspirated, manual shifting, American muscle V-8 pony car on a winding road in the mountains.😎👍I'll take either Mustang or Camaro!!!
I Know everyone keeps saying bring out the PP2 against the 1LE it has been done the 1lE is still faster. The PP2 is not a track package you can not continually lap the mustang due to over heating issues.

@@CoyoteFTW I know what your saying but we are comparing manual track pack cars and the truth of it is the 1LE can run lap after lap at that speed and the mustang can't due to over heating issues, the only way the mustang can run laps with the 1LE is to step up to the GT 350 which has all the necessary coolers installed to actually be able to run more than a couple of laps around the track.

Shawn Jenkins no doubt the camaro is STILL better around the track. It really doesn't matter to me which one is faster around the track. I've looked at both cars and sometimes I wonder if I should have picked the SS 1LE but it really has nothing to do with the track. I just think the 1LE has more for the money. Front and rear brembos, wider wheel and tire set until the PP2 came out, recaros standard, an alcantara flatbottom steering wheel, and a tremec 6speed. If Ford could have offered recaros standard and front rear brembos then I would feel better about it. Price was the main difference. I got my PP1 manual for 33k. No shot in hell I get a SS 1LE for that price. I still love my mustang. I really go back and forth between the 5.0, scatpack, and ss 1LE (because if I got a camaro it would have to be the 1LE). I've yet to see a PP2 in person but I'm sure had that came out when the PP1 came out I would have waited and possibly went that way. Still the PP2 is in the used Shelby gt350 price range at nearly 50k. So at the end of the day I probably should have just went with a used Shelby.

For 2018 ford changed gearing in transmission it's longer
Lots of the techs are from the corvette design into the Camaro.
I would have liked to see you compare the PP2 GT. I think that would have been a better comparison. I'm currently looking at both cars. Not a fan of the PP1 as I hate those particular black wheels but I like that Ford gives a cheaper option. I'd like to take out the PP2 and see what that's like. Note that I took out a brand new 1LE and the complete gauge cluster was a no show. Nothing worked other than low fuel light.
I would have, too, if Ford would have lent me one.
It's funny that as much as stuff has changed over the decades, the differences you are describing sound very similar going from the 4th gen SS LS1 vs GT/Cobra, to the 5th gen, and now to the 6th gen. Ergonomics, handling, engine, trans, composure at the limit, etc.
Went from an 18PP1 to a 21 1LE. They're both great cars, but the Chevy is on another level. If they were to compete they'd be in different classes.

I get what you're saying about missing gears. But in my 2013 mustang GT track package, I would constantly get locked out of second gear in normal light to light racing.I thought it was me. Then I learned that mustangs did it to professional drivers. Any how. Getting my 1LE next month. Your video is awesome thanks for your research!!!

GM just out engineered Ford. Even Gm haters are singing the praises of the 1LE. GM hired the top European chassis engineer for this generation of Camaro. The 1LE is head and shoulders above the mustang, it’s in super car territory when you add the ZL1 package.
People get mad, but it's the truth. Camaro SS 1LE is genuinely one of the best driving cars I have ever experienced, at any price point. Everyone I put behind the wheel agreed. It's magic. Now, they just have to work on the outward visibility and the heft...
I love my 21 1SS 1LE, it sticks to the road, it's a joy to drive. What a fucking car.

On the track of course a car made for the track will beat the mustang. But in a 1/4 or straight line where most street races take place. The 10 speed 5.0 pulls on the 1le. The top end is too much for camaros to handle
You’re right. Beyond the 1/4 mile, the Mustang has the advantage. But who really races on the street at 115+ MPH? I sure don’t! I do also agree that if you get a Mustang, you need to get the A10. The Getrag 6-speed is garbage. You need to buy a Mach-1 to get a decent 6-speed in the Mustang.

Wrong information at 4:30! Mustang has short really really short gearing compared to the camaro. 2nd gear goes barely above 62 mph.

Those longer gears are Ford screwing up the gear ratios on the 2018 MT82 to make the manual cars slower than they should be. 4th is 1:1 now instead of 5th so now the engine spends even more time out of it's power band.

You're comparing apples to oranges the Camaro ss1le is an awesome Road car track car it's made just for that, performance Pack 1 Mustang isn't the car to compare you should have compared the pp2 track version of the Mustang that's the car that competes with the 1Le Camaro , you would have achieved a better comparison.............

If you get the Magnetic Ride Control, it certainly is great, even in the stock 2SS. However, I went old school coil over suspension because they are much easier to maintain and replace. The Magnetic Ride control is very expensive to repair. I hate that the 2SS 1le only comes in manual and with Recaro seats. I hate those seats with a passion. They are even worse in the GT 350 / 500. They are not needed. Waste of money.
The ride is only slightly rougher than the Magnetic Ride control. In my honest and experienced opinion.
