    I just finished rebuilding a 4-53 from an old Terex loader for my boss to take to his gold mine in Coldfoot. With the help of your videos I was able to pull it off. You have answered many questions I had along with a tremendous amount of additional information. My most kind thanks for the trouble you went to preparing these uploads. very concise and to the point. thanks to you, I have a huge amount of brownie points built up! Instant LIKE and SUBSCRIBED!     I'm so glad I found your channel, you're demystifying my Detriot. My 653 Marine series gets clean fuel, regular oil changes and run all the time. After 7000 hours it starts right up, doesn't smoke, burns and blows a tiny bit of oil, and runs like a clock. Eventually, I'm going to have to do something. Thanks for taking the extra time to make these vids.

      You're welcome.:) I thought it might help guys like yourself and others that own these engines to not only tune them, but rebuild them as well. Since I own several Detroits I thought I'd make up some detialed videos of rebuilding and tuning them. I also drive a Silver 4-53T daily and do several updates every year on maintainance and running alternative fuels. I still have several more Detroits in the pipeline that need rebuilding, so will continue with the videos.:)

    CZcams told me about the first start before this one. Those Jake Heads make things more troublesome for sure. Nice job explaining the tuneup.

    Great video. I'm about to try this on a 57 4-53 that we overhauled. I did one a long time ago and ran the buffer in too far. (the governor was faulty) the engine ran away and scared the crap out of me. luckily I was able to quickly hit a fuel fitting and cut off fuel. I heard they will run away and suck the oil from the crankcase until they self destruct. When they are running right there is nothing like a Detroit Diesel.     thanks for posting this. i suspect my 453t should have a bit more oomph in it than it does. i dont get any power until about 2100 rpms. your video has me wondering how sloppy things are.

      It's worth a look at your governor and run through the rack as well. I would also advance the timing on your injectors to 1.46"-1.47", that will make a big difference. Do you have 5C60's? Thanks for watching and subscribing.:)

      That's ok, download a manual and both the throttle delay and fuel modulator are covered. They give detailed explanation on the tuning of them. Thanks for watching.:)

    In my shop manual it say when your injector follower is fully depressed then ajust your valve

    I have a 371 with 4 valve head with n45 injector and i can't find the height measurement for that application, i would really appreciated for any info on that

      I've checked the manual and it's 1.46" for standard cam timing and 1.484" for advanced cam timing.:)

      @@detroitgarage9430 Thanks I watch all of your videos.Is the injector height set at 1.484.This has been a great little motor.Beleave it or not but it is in a 45 foot sailboat and it pushes it at 6 knot's.

      Had a look at the manual and and for marine they were fitted with either N40's or N50"s at 1.46".

      210 HP and 475 FTLBS of torque. With the water meth on it's 240HP and 525 FTLBS of torque. Thanks for watching.:)
