    What type of fuel are you putting into it. I have a Nissan Juke 1.6L turbo. I have only put premium in the tank and have averaged 31.2 miles per gallon in the last 4 years of driving. Mixed city and highway. When I put regular one time and the mileage dropped to 24 mpg. Turbocharged cars run better with 93 octane or higher.

    Steve, an update for you. I recently went to Southern Oregon from Los Angeles and took care to focus on ways to control the acceleration and to increase my MPG. I through out any thought of a quick ETA. By focusing on the micro mpg readout in real time I was gradually able to extend the algorythm for economy and increase my previous average fuel consumption of 16 mpg to over 20 and eventually on my last 2 tanks of fuel on the return trip which was mixed highway and freeway and country roads (28 MPG) and then all freeway to home from Petaluma, (27.8 MPG). What I have to omit is an all country road with little traffic that hit (42.MPG) as I must have missed a fuel receipt. I did not purchase any weed or consume any. Just must be an error to be that far above normal. The fuel consumption improved gradually as my trip progressed. The history of the vehicle is that I get under 20 MPG and normally it has been about 17.2 - 17.5 overall. Highway. City is less. 16.8 or less.
    Now I want to see what I am able to maintain in Los Angeles with mostly city driving. I think Ford could improve the performance easily by changing the acceleration curve by changing the action of the throttle linkage between the foot pedal and the actual throttle. I have had to control this on many sports cars in order to better synch dual and tripple carburetors, and also to make sure that there is good interaction between the throttle and clutch for race conditions.
    The real help would be a better curve between the torque and economy and the gear selection.
    When I manually controlled the transmission to keep the RPM in the desired range for good MPG I was able to see the readout on the micro computer fuel consumption and maximize the efficiency of the engine. A curve display and a better algorythm would improve safety as it is hard to focus on the micro computer read out and be safe on the freeway or highway with all the traffic.
    You try this with a helper to keep you safe. Juggle this to get the best MPG. When my truck was new, I often got 32 MPG on the highway.
    What is mostly wrong with the truck is the digital guy behind the wheel. ME.
    However, FORD can improve performance and make the EcoBoost Ranger with the 10 speed a winning combination by allowing me to select an algorythm that will satisfy the driving condition that prevail at the time.

Until then I was able to see the high 20's most of the time. After that it was in the toilet. Now about 16 mpg. 2 wheel drive, 4 cyl turbo eco boost, 2019.🏄‍♂

    My F-150 is a brick, so it is very sensitive to speed and air density changes (Humidity, barometric pressure, temperature and wind direction). My best Highway has been over 25mpg, and my worst is 17. There are also differences in fuel ala winter blend and summer blend that turbo charged engines are more sensitive to. I've gotten over 22 driving in the mountains, but 18 driving downhill to Texas. When you have the surface area of a convenience store, you will have variation. I would also suspect the FX4 Rangers return poorer fuel economy due to the lack of aero in place of the skid plates. ALSO, short trips don't allow the engine to get up to temperature. So if you regularly drive only 10-15 minutes to and fro, know that your engine isn't even fully warmed, much less your transmission. Lubricants are still quite thick at those intervals.

    Isn't there a way to measure how much fuel is pumped by the minute or second in accordance to the RPM? More fuel at higher RPM, that kind of thing. What bugs me is mpg will always vary between people. You won't get the same mpg as the listed numbers unless you run the vehicle the same way. The argument is tiring.

      FORD sent a special driver. He could do it better than me. FORD is tiring. It is turbo lag and carbon build up. Test and record the back pressure. Yes what you ask for is what a dynamo test rig will do, and it can be fitted to the vehicle with lots of other gizmos... I want a sexy female robot driver that is quiet and pays her own way. Comes with the Electric Truck that is still down the road.

    Steve, I watched your video again on 8/07/2023. I have high fuel consumption or lower than expected mpg for my vehicle with nearly 28,000 miles. I use the AC most of the time. That is only part of the reason for my experience with this vehicle. I suspect that the exhaust system is plugged (catalytic converter). I would change the entire exhaust system and replace it with the after market 3 in diameter system if I was sure FORD would still keep the warranty in effect and if the State of California would allow me to keep it registered and on the street. I am only interested in getting the fuel consumption that was advertised. What I received the first 10,000 miles was better than the EPA ratings and what FORD stated. After the 10,000 mile service. The vehicle declined and fuel consumption increased. Now I am getting about 17 - 18 MPG no matter what I do. This could also be the TRANSMISSION or a combination of factors. I have a feather foot and keep the RPM below 1800 most of the time. I rarely hit 70 on the FWY. It could also be quality of fuel, but no matter the octane rating of the fuel, it is about the same. Anyway, I think it is time to find another vehicle. The scientist in me wants to persist, but the business in my head says to cut my losses. Trade it for something I like. Like an old C10 Chevy with a straight 6 and an overdrive three speed stick shift transmission, and 920/15 tires. I did a small block v8 like that in the old days and got 27 mpg at 90 on the fwys... all the time. No bs. Ran it on regular gas.

  • @benhamilton3723
    @benhamilton3723 Před rokem

    Steve, I just purchased my lease back for my 2019 Ford Ranger with Turbo. That is the 4 cyl Eco Boost engine with the 6 speed auto transmission. I purchased it because it was better to purchase it back than to just turn it in. I used USAA to finance the purchase. FORD is another name for skunk. Always test with a full tank of gas at start and at finish of the run. Then you have a fair idea volume wise how much fuel you consumed overall. Never trust an onboard computer to give you accurate readings, even when it has agreed with your long hand calculations over many months. Computers and Chips can have glitches. I complained to FORD every time I had the vehicle serviced in the 3 year lease. Even though FORD treated me like I was a pain in the Mr. BUTT. The had someone drive my vehicle and get it back up to 33 MPG like it did when it was NEW on a trip to Texas from Los Angeles. All Hwy miles and FAST... cool weather, but not cold except in the mountains of southern New Mexico on the way to the reservation, at night... hours of very cold weather driving on new deep snow. Always with excellent mileage. Above 23 on the computer. Overall the wet mileage calculations exceeded the onboard computer on nearly 3,000 mile trip. At 10,000 miles, Ford recalled for trans adjustment. After that, I could never get anything like good milage again. It dropped to 19 mpg and less. I now have just under 22,000 miles and I can't get it up to 17 mpg in any conditions. I keep the RPM below 2,000 and usually around 1500 - 1600 RPM. I believe the reason is that the exhaust system is full of carbon. Coked up. Black coke not the joy stuff. The reason for that is over fuel conditions because it wants to keep RPM low but still deliver the performance HP. That is what is killing the engine. I am in California and CA is strict about the factory CAT. If the 2 1/2 inch Exhaust System were removed and replaced with a 3.0 inch system from header to tail pipe, the back pressure against the turbo would be removed and the turbo RPM would come up faster giving the excellent Eco Boost Engine the air it needs to burn clean. Better HP at lower engine speed, and more oxygen to burn off the unburned fuel that is depositing suit in the cat and the exhaust muffler. The way to test for this is to weld bicycle tube filler access points into the pipe before (if Possible) and after the turbo charger, then in front of the muffler and at the tail pipe is not required... There should never be more than a maximum of 3.5 lbs pressure after the turbo charger. If there is, the turbo will spin slowly and cause "turbo drag". On diesel engines this is even more important and on marine diesel engines it is critical because the exhaust is cooled with water after the turbo and the exhaust pressure is used to remove the water, often with a water lock or water lift muffler system.
    There are aftermarket will fit exhaust systems to replace the under sized 2.5 inch FORD Factory system with 3.0 inches. I am going to give this a try and ask J&J muffler shop in Hawthorne / Inglewood CA to do the testing, replacement, and install of the replacement 3.0 inch exhaust. Very soon. There is no truck I really want to purchase right now, but maybe in 2 more years all this will be in the past. All electric is possible now, but marine conversions to 100% electric drive is costing about a 15% premium over the cost of diesel or diesel electric. However we have at least 4 ferry business using 100% batter power vessels to power vessels and carry up to 400 passengers. Niagra Falls can recharge their vessel in about 15 to 20 minutes from 0 charge and do up to 14 trips into the falls with the repowered "Isle of the Mist".

    Thanks for the detailed info & research! And yes, I'll likely wait for my Ford Ranger.
    But that was the original plan anyway: Although I was/am quite interested in the "new" Ford Ranger, I wanted to pay-off my current vehicle (in about a year) and then possibly get a Ranger then (likely a 2020 model in March 2020).
    I COULD go ahead and trade-in my current vehicle (or sell it first) and put that $$ down on a 2019 Ranger NOW, but I've been wanting to wait for a year -- partly because I may get a small motor-home (such as a Winnebago Revel 4x4 44E) for my Daily Driver -- just don't know yet. And of course, being the this Ranger is a "first year/new" model (meaning here in the US since 2011, not globally) and has been modified for the American market, any first-year bugs from that will hopefully be worked-out by the time the 2020 models come out -- or for sure by 2021!
    Whatever, since this big news-story came out about Ford and MPG "discrepancies," my plan to wait may be even more of a good idea...

      "I think you'll have an answer as to what you should do once you get behind the wheel" -- Steven Vargas.
      Since I want to (but don't HAVE to) pay off my current vehicle, there's no point in driving one NOW. But your words above touch on a possible problem: If I go into a dealer and drive a Ranger -- and the sales-droid has selling Super Powers -- I may not be able to "just say no" and leave without one. And then there's the fact I just put $1K of new tires on my SUV (Continental TerrainContact AT) and would like to USE them for a while (in town and out in the desert here)! ;-)
      I know my SUV will be a year older when I'm ready to buy another vehicle (truck OR a Class B 4x4/AWD & 4-Season motor home) and so that will make it worth a bit less, but even in a year it'll still be worth some decent $$...so I just need to be patient.
      But as I said, that year gives me time to see what Ford decided to do re: any improvements for the Ranger...either some TSBs on the 2019 model to "fix" the MPG issue (if that's even possible) or what it does to the 2020 model re: MPG -- and any other improvements.

      I believe that the computer over fuels around town to stabilize excessive back pressure caused by carbon buildup at the Catalytic Converter. Then the engine does not get enough boost from the turbo charger. I think the engine performance issues can be proven by intalling exhaust pressure devices before and after the turbocharger and also before and after the muffler which is at the rear of the vehicle.
      Also, there are 6 emission control sensors and at least 3 of them can affect fuel system and exhaust. I believe that FORD needs another law suit to represent those of us in the negative in the aftermarket. The previous suit, which FORD arranged to win, was just to see if FORD met the minimum ethical standard for reporting according to the US EPA which accepted the results. It actually had no real measurments of vehicles such as ours that regularly do not meed fuel consumption claims by FORD, by a huge number.
      I have less than 29,000 miles on my 2019.
      I am NOT SATISFIED AT ALL. I COMPLAIN EVERY TIME AND ONLY FORD HAS TOUCHED THE VEHICLE!
      All of this can be eliminated by changing out the exhaust system and exchanging it for a 4 inch exhaust as in those used for offroad vehicles that come with a properly sized Catalytic Converter. California does not allow replacement of a non-FORD Catalytic Converter that is for this model only. Hence I am trapped by FORD from doing a will fit replacement inline exhaust system. It will not pass California because of the CAT.

    It is disappointing, yes. However, there are few vehicles meeting EPA figures due to the test being poor. Driving over 70 mph is costing you mpg. If you see TFL truck, even the mild hybrid Hemi ram 1500 came way short of its EPA.I know my Chrysler 300 is 7 mpg less then EPA, then EPA re-rated it and I am still 5 mpg less then that rating. I have tried with cruise on and off and different mph I was driving and it sucks. The diesel get the EPA but the government and American people killed the diesel engine.

    Good analysis and observations. As for city driving I don't have much respect for Ford's ecoboost. They suck the gas when under boost running around stop/go traffic. This is nothing new for Ford. However, they do better then larger displacement on the hwy. That is normal. But with this 2.3 I have my doubts whether its any better then GM's VVT 3.6. If it is, its not by much. We are probably talking 1 mpg difference. This can actually translate to big fines and also checks back to owners like yourself. Kia/Hyundai got fined over 700 million some years ago for claiming a bunch of their cars got 40 MPG. The surprise here is how much it's sucking at idle. Regardless, I can see Ford making a adjustment to the MPG. But what's more damaging and puts them at risk for liability is how they were raving to everyone how this Truck is best in class MPG. That's a bold statement and you can be sure Ford's lawyers are walking on egg shells right now. I can see GM possibly suing ford for misleading customers. I'm still wondering why the start stop makes that much difference. I don't think this is normal behavior. Something different going on with that eco tune and I mean that in not a good way.
    Anyway keep us updated when the weather gets warmer.

      Interesting point about Chevy or another competitor suing. I’ve actually seen a few videos doing Tacoma Vs Ranger in which the Tacoma had better mileage. I’m sure the Ranger would beat the Tacoma on the highway but most video focus on off road and performance driving, and in those cases it looks like the ecoboost can’t compete. However if you’re doing a lot of highway driving between 55-65mph the Ecoboost does look like a class leader.
      It will be interesting to see what happens.

      @HiPlains1 Před 5 lety +1

      @@daedalus9042 Yes but allot of trucks will do good driving 55-65 because wind resistance is exponentially lower at those speeds. I just bought a brand new Nissan Pro 4X because I don't want any of new tech transmissions. No active learning, no computers just a heavy duty 5 speed OD with the mighty VQ 40 that can run 300K miles. Its a proven setup. But running up to Santa Fe today from Albuquerque (5K to 6.5K feet) and back down against a 40MPH head wind I still managed 18.2 MPG. That included a good hour in stop/go traffic in Santa Fe which is a miserable place to drive. Very congested with LONG lights. My speed was about 72 MPH at around 2200 rpm. And that is with the Pro 4X factory lift and 31 inch all terrain tires. If I drive straight/level at 60 mph I have seen 21 mpg. In that test the Ranger would destroy me lol. From what I know about the ecoboost its the turbo boost that sucks up the gas. If your only doing 55/65 your probably running below 2K rpms. At that speed there will be little boost. So the boost is the catch 22 on the Ranger. If you want all that torque and power then you have allot more boost on the engine and your MPG's are going to take a dive. I'll admit though that the rest can probably beat the Frontiers in MPG. But not in reliability. The two most reliable trucks are now the old school ones with heavy duty engines and heavy transmission with the heavier torque convertors. That is the Tundra and the Frontier. Both will run forever. The akinson cycle active learning computer likes to control shift points early, killing torque to try to gain a little more MPG's. The damn transmission will also search gears. Even on a level road. I also wanted one because of all the hype and number one this and best resale that. The engine/trans is absolutely garbage. Gutless is not a strong enough word.. Toyota is riding on past perceptions and brand loyalty and nothing else. But even your die hard taco heads are not liking this new engine/trans tune. And the 2020 did nothing to fix this transmission. They added LED lights, Android auto, and finally power seats since you sit on the floor. But the cabin is still small and if your tall you head will hit the top. The back seat is a joke. And honestly it does 0-60 in 10 seconds. And its no longer number one in reliability. Frontier is now rated highest in reliability and has a much better engine/trans tune. Worlds better. I don't care it takes a few more MPG's. It works. But the third gen Taco is a hot mess. Owners are so desperate to get their transmission to work normally that they pay OVTune 700 dollars to flash their 6 speed and change the shift points. IMO, the only way to deal with the problem is try to locate one with the 6 speed Manual transmission. That one still works as it should. Good luck finding one though. Very rare but they still make them. Just like the Frontier but the 5 speed OD AT works perfectly and really only need to go to MT if that is a choice. Buy your taco but do yourself a favor and just test drive a Nissan Pro 4X before you make your decision. You might be surprised on what you think.
