I laughed when you were talking about the size of RV you'd recommend for this truck because that's roughly the same size of RV as I'm looking at for my 16 F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost and max tow package.
The majority of people who are going to buy this truck are probably not going to tow a RV. That being said, some may try to after watching your video. Kudos to you for giving us a reasonable choice of travel trailers for this new Ranger. 👍
I have been towing a 25' Keystone Passport Ultralite with my Ranger and it has been doing a spectacular job of it so far. The tow weight of my RV has been right around 5500lbs or so. The Ranger towes it with ease.
Is the 5500lbs dry weight? We are looking to buy an RV but wondering what the highest in dry weight it should be? 2019 4x2 Ford Ranger 2.3L Ecoboost w/tow package
@@Samboat616 will it do it, yes. Almost any vehicle will move almost any trailer. But it's going to tax the equipment of the truck quite a bit. I agree with the reviewers opinion to stay under 4000lbs dry weight/ 24ft.
I have a 2019 Ranger Lariat (decked out) that I absolutely LOVE. It is a GREAT truck! .. I am towing a 25' Keystone Passport Ultralite with it and it is towing just fine. I wouldn't recommend an RV trailer any larger than our Keystone as this is probably about the absolute maximum you would want to tow with it, but it has been towing it beautifully.
Skip to 8:15 if you want to hear about towing, for one minute about towing. Despite the video title, the first 2/3 of the video has nothing to do with towing, neither does the last 2-3 minutes.
Budd you produced a great series of videos on the new Ranger. I'm glad that you mentioned that this configuration of the Ranger came out around 2010. That should shut up the "looks like a Ram and looks like a Tacoma" guys as the styling came out way before them!! I agree that the integrated brake controller should either come with the Trailer towing package or a stand alone option. The few trailers that you recommended had single axles …. I really think that a unit with tandem axles would tow better. Thanks for your videos.
Everything I've seen on this new Ranger I really like it! I've owned 2 of the older Rangers, an 86 and a 95-both supercab 2wd's. They were very well made, tough little trucks! I sold my 1995 truck and moved into a then new 2006 F-150 because I simply needed an 8' bed truck. Now that my work and lifestyle no longer call for the bigger truck I'm looking forward to downsizing again. Though I do wish Ford would offer a naturally-aspirated 4 or 6 cylinder engine. And I still miss a true manual transmission.
Have you pulled through any mountainous areas? Handle ok on the highway? Just got my trailer and it’s similar to your specs. Haven’t had it on highway yet so just a little curious.
@@NateMoore92 The worse terrain I've towed it through has been through the Grapevine in Interstate 5 coming in and out of the central valley here in California. Up the steepest of grades, I did feel like I was smashing on the gas pedal a bit. Overall, it handled surprisingly well. Going down hill pretty steep I kept it on cruise control and my Primus iQ brake controller worked amazingly. Had to tap the breaks a few times but did very well. Really my only complaint with the Ranger has been gas tank size, but that's about it.
One thing not mentioned is the Ranger owner manual says you should not tow a trailer faster than 62 mph. Between that and no large gas tank option, I don't see this as a serious tow vehicle. From page 208 in the towing section: "Do not exceed 62 mph (100 km/h) even if a country allows higher speeds under certain conditions." Also, this is alarming too: "Reduce the stipulated maximum permitted gross combination mass by 10% for every additional 1,000 ft (300 m) in high altitude regions above 1,000 ft (300 m)."
BSfunk44 it’s a dealer installed accessory just not from the factory the one they use is the same as the F150’s indash controller. He covers it in the video just sucks we that we need to pay more.
Factory or dealer installed, a brake controller generally costs more--I don't think many/any trucks have it standard (although it comes with trailer tow packages). This is the first I've heard of it being a dealer accessory that can be built into the dash. I hope that's correct because the thought of some third party brake controller in a brand new truck is a non-starter for me. I just wish they offered a bigger gas tank. Towing won't get you too far with the tank offered.
I just bought a 2021 XLT Super Crew..and even though I've barely put any miles on it, I just love it. The interior space is very deceiving for a smaller truck, you don't feel squished even in the back seats. I'm rigging mine up to overland
I have the same with fx4 and tow package. Going to put a 2.5" leveling kit with falcon Wildpeak at3w 255/80/17 and pull a medium beach ready pop-up trailer for beach camping at P.I.N.S. in tx to sleep 4
For the money they are asking you can get a 3/4 ton truck with more engine options. For 45K all you get is shocks, a canoe rack and some comfort options. At least put the V6 in it.
I'm really enjoying my '21 Ranger thus far. Smooth ride, 24 mpg, and it's just analog enough for me. I'm sure the new Ranger will be trick, but I'm fine right where I am. While I do wish it came with a built-in trailer brake controller, I'm going with the Curt Echo bluetooth dongle to tow my travel trailer. Plug-and-play without the dealer ripping into the interior at $180 per hour.
something tells me that *if* they make a Ranger Raptor it's just going to get a 350 hp 2.3 EcoBoost engine and not a v6. They'll just reuse the Focus RS tune of the engine on this. That's the only reason I can guess for why the engine is so detuned. The v6 Colorado is within spitting distance of the Camaro v6 engine specs (about 20 hp less) while this engine is down 40 hp on the Mustang and almost 100 down on the Focus RS.
The focus rs engine doesn’t have the duty cycle capacity to meet truck demands. If they do it’ll have severely diminished capacities like the f150 raptor has. The 2.7L makes more sense because it doesn’t need to sacrifice anything to make those numbers.
I love how people just assume Ford uses the same exact engine as they do in other vehicles. Only thing they have in common is the 2.3 displacement. They don't just drop a Ecoboost Mustang or RS engine in something and detune it.
Ford wont bring the Ranger Raptor to the U.S. anytime soon. Why wpuld they? Too many people already buy the regular Raptor. A Ranger Raptor would just take away from those premium sales.
I love most of the smaller trucks on the market today but they just simply aren't any cheaper then a fullsize. The manufacturers need to figure out a way to make these trucks significantly cheaper than a fullsize.
Feature to feature there’s a difference. The Lariat FX4 Ranger is cheaper than a similarly equipped Lariat F150. But just getting into the cheapest F150 you’d be right with incentives a $35k F150 is more capable but it’s also physically bigger.
@Enjoy Life Yeah, I just don't want/need a fullsize truck. Would be miserable driving an F-150, Tundra, Silverado. Happy Ford is reinvigorating the midsize market again.
Great video with an awesome summation of the trucks features. The only unfortunate engineering item on the truck is indeed the dealer installed "knob" trailer brake controller. Quite honestly, that little faux paux on Ford will not keep this truck from being top of the game and it will be a huge success. The Jeep Gladiator may beat it in a couple of categories in the coming weeks, but it takes a special breed of truck owner to choose a solid front axle over the more comfortable and better handling IFS in the Ranger. Personally, I really like the Ranger and it has a lot nice design features that put it ahead of the competition, but after years of running compact Jeeps (XJs and ZJs) and other compact SUVs, I don't think that I would go back to a smaller vehicle and would stick with the full size truck with 4 feet of width between the wheel wells in the bed. Based on where I am at in life, I am willing to give up some of the maneuverability to get the convenience of the extra volume in the bed. I also like the bigger motor and better power to weight ratio when traveling through the mountains between the Philly Burbs and northeastern KY (which I make that trip about 8 time a year).
As a working man, the supercab XL with absolutely no options except the tow package and the bedliner is the way to go. Vinyl seats of course. 7,500lbs is only insufficient once in a blue moon in residential remodeling and it's at a price the common man could actually afford, with a full fat 5 year warranty to boot. If only it came with the 3.3L NA V6. I like tuning little turbocharged engines as much as the next guy but a 2.3L just makes me nervous.
I’m disappointed that they won’t be offering it with a crew cab/long bed. I’d also like to see them offer it in a V6. For those reasons, I would buy a Toyota even though I’m a Ford guy.
Michael-Can you get a Tacoma with a crew cab and a long bed? I tried building one on the Toyota website and it didn't give me an option to do so. Looks like your reason to buy the Tacoma is just for the V6 then?
It can tow 7500 lbs, so if you get a trailer with a dry weight of 5000 lbs, then you have up to 2500 lbs of "head room". Gear, water tanks, food, ice, etc. Plus you probably don't want to push it right to the limit. 5k seems like a pretty comfortable ceiling.
Misinformation about tow rating. It’s not rated to tow a 7,500 flatbed. It’s rated to tow a 7,500 lbs trailer including travel trailers. Ford doesn’t rate the truck to tow the easiest trailer possible, they look at what the hardest will be so that you will be safe. But I’m sure that’s what the engineer told you when you asked him on camera and then didn’t show his response. With 10% tongue weight and two passengers the ranger is around 5,500 lbs. 7,500 lbs is only 36% more weight. An f350 srw towing 18,000 lbs with 10% tongue weight and two passengers is roughly 9,000 lbs... that’s 100% more weight. By your flawed logic, an f350 srw should only tow 8,000 pounds (proportional to the ranger recommendation) The ranger has the gear ratios, cooling, and suspension to handle that weight. Ford wouldn’t rate it that way otherwise. I’ve maxed towed my trucks plenty of times and they always felt safe enough to handle more. (Tacoma, Silverado 1500, ram 2500 diesel).
"Firestarter"........You are misinformed.. when it says 7500 lb trailer that's the actual weight of the vehicle being towed the ranger itself with two passengers would probably weigh around 4,500 to five thousand pounds empty. the gross combined vehicle weight has not been published yet to my knowledge, that would be the truck and trailer and all of its cargo and passengers. you need to get your information straight before you criticize. With that being said I would have to agree that I would not want to be towing a 7500 lb travel trailer with even the best-equipped Ranger. I agree that five thousand pounds in a high-profile travel trailer should be about the limit. 7500 lb could be for a small tractor say a John Deere 755 with a loader on it or a small skid steer like a bobcat S70 with trailer which would gross at between six and seven thousand lbs
It must be from your love of LED lighting. I noticed that when you filmed the LED lighting on the Ranger the camera didn't have that flashing circling motion. I just watched TFL test a Tundra and the LED's went crazy.
Very few people actually tow and when they do its a small trailer lawn mower carrying size. Waste of money to add it to every truck built just to sit there for eternity. If you want to tow big trailers just have it added. No brainer. Bragging rights only to add to every truck. Ford thinks things through. Nice review. Its on my radar again!
You touched on this is several videos, but, I would like to see a video on the importance on wheel base and configuration on towing capacities. Maybe paying special attention to the difference of mass configuration in a Travel Trailer Vs. a Cargo Trailer.
When suggesting not exceeding a 24ft trailer, are you referring to trailer length or total length of trailer, hitch and other parts? I’m trying to figure this out because that’s right on the line of so many trailers I like
Would you choose the new Ford Ranger (max 7,500 lb) or an F-150 for full-time RV living with a max weight 4300 Airstream Basecamp REI 20X, and why? Thanks for posting this!
Great video, I have a 2022 ranger xlt. Do you think I could flat tow my 1987 jeep cherokee xj while carrying a slide in camper at the same time? The camper wouldn't weigh more than 900 lbs
Have to be careful without an integrated trailer brake, as some states have max allowed towing numbers that are very low without it. We care about safety as much as you seem to. Is this a topic you would be willing to address? Thanks for another great review!
If it were me I would absolutely negotiate a brake controller from the dealership while purchasing the truck. aside from that adding a brake controller to a pickup truck is generally about $150 total cost in the aftermarket side
Definitely would say the same thing, considering the ridiculous price on this 3/4 of a truck. Several states require a trailer brake controller for trailers of 1500lbs, others are 2000lbs, but if your trailer is equipped with brakes they should be working regardless of how much the trailer weighs, the more braking power you have the better off you are regardless of weight.
You've done a great job reviewing this truck. I don't know why yet, but I don't like the chrome front end, the mixture of painted area and chrome doesn't seem to look right. Anyone have any thoughts on that???? Merry Christmas to Everyone.
It’s a very nice truck!!........... but I see no reason to trade in my 2017 Tacoma TRD off-road for this........... competition is good........ I wish ford luck.
Nice recap video! How did the seating position feel? You mentioned the interior is comfortable, and the seats have very nice bolstering. Just wanted to know, since trucks like the Tacoma have such a poor, low strung seating position, where you are practically sitting on the floor.
I was pleasantly surprised with the seating position. I did not feel as if the dash was too high up or I was unable to see clearly over the hood. It felt very much like a half ton truck in terms of the interior as well as exterior overall feel and appearance. You can instantly tell it was a midsize truck as you negotiated maneuvers and felt how easily transition through traffic
@@BigTruckBigRV Oh, thank you for the reply! Nice to hear that is comfortable. That is a thing I sacrifice in my 2004 Ranger. Being a true compact pickup, the seat is very low to the floor, and being 6'1" there is no thigh support at all. Basically, it is the same type of seating position like in the Tacoma! But to Ford's defense, this is a tiny truck, and hence not much room to play with!
Surprising to find the otherwise capable Tacoma has a poor seating position. ... I think driving the mid-size Ranger in town and parking lots would be easier than a full-size truck. With the low C.R. ratings for the Colorado, the old-style Nissan Frontier, the ugly Honda Ridgeline the Ranger might be the truck to get. Nice reviews.
8:30 under 5000 gvw...under 24' feet... maybe an Airstream. You picked the exact Airstream I have. Mine is 23' with 4800 gvw. I'd be really interested in how this truck would tow that. My hunch is it'll be a tad under powered (going up steep grades) as my friend helped tow it with his 2015 F-150 and there was ever so slight bucking and the trailer moving the truck even with a weight distribution hitch. Remember the Mazda B3000? Damn, I loved that truck bought it new off the lot in 2002 with it's v6 engine had get up and go. The drivability of that truck was awesome. Would love to come full circle again. Thanks for the review.
I have a 2020 Ford Ranger and have been looking at trailers with 4,500lb dry weight rating at about 21ft. It sounds like that might be a stretch for my truck even though it's rated at 7,500lbs.
I pull a travel trailer that dry weighs 5300 and I haven’t had any issues with my 2021 Ranger. I keep it around 55 mph and don’t travel with tanks full or anything. We don’t put a lot of extra stuff in the trailer. Hope tha5 helps.
Great review. I just watched your Honda Ridgeline video. The Ranger is tempting because of it's price. But I think I will go for the Ridgeline because I need more car than I need truck.
My dad has one of these trucks, he seen a video on here of a guy in Australia towing a 5th wheel camper with one and thinks it is something he can do. Please tell me that he is nuts.
Great video as always I love the truck but I have a question for you why is it with Ford the ranger and the F-150 both have fog lamps on the STX package but not on the super duty STX package can you tell me why or guess why & do you think they would ever do a diesel and the ranger
What do you think about towing a jay feather x213 with this ranger if using trailer brakes and weight distribution/sway control? GVWR on the camper is 5500 lbs
Thank you sir once again great review if I wasn't 6 ft 6 inches tall I would definitely buy one but I will be getting an F-150 very soon SuperCrew of course but it is a great little truck I think it would do well in the market
QUESTION : Is the 10 speed transmission the same as the one in the F150 or a smaller scaled down one ??? And does it have a Aluminum body/bed like the F150 ??? Thanks and happy New Year
Nice Video. I had a 2013 Ranger wildtrak with the 3.2 liter diesel I drove 155000 miles in less then 3 years. It was probably the best truck I ever had comfort wise and it was a lot of fun to drive. But the reliability was really bad I think everything that can break broke on my Truck that was the reason I sold it earlier than normal , I normally drive my vehicles for 5 years. Greetings from Austria
Could a Ranger tow a small toy hauler? Fully loaded with water, fuel, two motorcycles, and stocked with food/bedding it’d be around 6,200lbs... would that be too much??
It's a totally different animal. The f450 has a significantly firmer and more aggressive ride pattern. The ranger feels far more like a new half ton truck. First time you hit a bump or pothole you'll realize that more than ever
Well all I have electronic stuff they can keep I buy a truck the only thing I want is cruise control a radio and AC nothing else none of that other fancy stuff don't need it don't want it
The Ridgeline felt firmer and more planted in terms of overall stability. More like driving a sedan than a pickup truck. The ranger felt more like a half ton pickup truck which clearly is delineated by the body on frame design
Step 2: Quit trolling on midsize truck review videos. Step 3: Stop crying snowflake tears. Step 4: Mind my own f**king business, like how I want other people to do to me, and let my fellow man drive whatever the hell he wants too.

By your flawed logic, an f350 srw should only tow 8,000 pounds (proportional to the ranger recommendation)
The ranger has the gear ratios, cooling, and suspension to handle that weight.
Thank you for giving a solid straight opinion on trailer weight. That is the last piece to my decision on buying a Ranger. It’s a yes. :)
If someone wants to tow on a regular basis, you shouldnt be looking at the Ranger. Look at the F150 or something else.
I take one Lariat. To go, please.
Can you imagine the 2.7 ecoboost in this
That will be the ranger raptor
Why not just put 3.5 in there
The new Ranger has it and the Raptor just came out with the 3.0 Ecoboost
You touched on this is several videos, but, I would like to see a video on the importance on wheel base and configuration on towing capacities. Maybe paying special attention to the difference of mass configuration in a Travel Trailer Vs. a Cargo Trailer.
Would appreciate an update if you have one... buying a 31 foot keystone tomorrow at 6700 dry weight. Have the new ranger as well ... thanks
@Charles Atkins
Update would be awesome!
OMG YOU ARE IN JULIAN/CUYAMACA
IN SANDIEGO CA🥰🥰🥰 been camping there all my life
When suggesting not exceeding a 24ft trailer, are you referring to trailer length or total length of trailer, hitch and other parts?
I’m trying to figure this out because that’s right on the line of so many trailers I like
They are some nice looking trucks
Bought mine Saturday. Good review. Thanks.
The video says recommended towing but did not talk about towing trailer
Big Truck Big RV, WOW, 500 Videos, congrats!
Ultrafrozen not enough for you? Mr Truck has about 5 hours of video on the Ranger.
Sorry, I don't follow. My comment congratulates Big Truck's quantity of 500 videos. I saw that number pop up when searching for his channel.
@@Ultrafrozen LOL Sorry I thought that you were complaining about 500 Ranger videos. LOL Yes BTBRV congrats on 500 videos
I found your video informative and help me understand the capabilities of my 2019 Ford ranger thank you
Would you choose the new Ford Ranger (max 7,500 lb) or an F-150 for full-time RV living with a max weight 4300 Airstream Basecamp REI 20X, and why?
I'm with you. Make it chrome or paint it. The mixture is weird, IMO.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is why manufacturers give package choices.
It’s a very nice truck!!........... but I see no reason to trade in my 2017 Tacoma TRD off-road for this........... competition is good........ I wish ford luck.
It just gives more options to the consumer to buy other mid sized trucks. The Ranger is not better than the Tacoma. Not even close.
@@chrisginoc nor worse not even close
One thing to mention though, that was a course set up by Ford to highlight this vehicle.
100% agree, but it was still a very rough course with steep climbs and drops that didn't come across as such in the video.
Thanks for the review.
a 14 foot wolf pup toy hauler would be a great trailer to pull behind the new ranger.
I was set on the Ranger until no factory installed Tow Brake system..ugh! Thanks for info.
Two words:
After market.
It takes 10 mins to install one. Just get a good curt brake controller and the cable for your vehicle.
Im between this and a ram warlock. I want to tow a trailer of 4000 4500. Would be enough
@@NateMoore92 thank you.
Great review. I just watched your Honda Ridgeline video. The Ranger is tempting because of it's price. But I think I will go for the Ridgeline because I need more car than I need truck.
Maybe you can get a good deal on one because their sales are down this year.
My dad has one of these trucks, he seen a video on here of a guy in Australia towing a 5th wheel camper with one and thinks it is something he can do. Please tell me that he is nuts.
I think I’m
The only guy that prefers chrome on new trucks
No the ones I've specced out online all include the chrome package. I love chrome!
Nope...I do too. I just got a Lariat FX4 and LOVE it, CHROME BABY!
I like the Ranger, just disappointing that they’re not offering a sunroof option. Also, nobody has mentioned yet if it can be towed behind a RV
Apparently in the owner's manual it does indicate a sequence you can use to safely flat tow a ranger behind a motorhome
Can't wait to see one in person.
DOES THE EXTENDED cab have a bench seat or is it 2 fold up seats???
4000lb or lighter 20ft and smaller. Good trailer brake set a little heavier than the truck brakes will normally fix braking issues
Love my 19 Ranger
I see myself in this pulling an Aliner in a few years.
Still can't get a brake controller from Ford in December 2019.
Good review 👍
I heard they will do a 2022 hybrid. I will hold out for that one.
Cheers.
I love watching your videos!! keep it up
I like the Chrome package!
2019 Ford Ranger would be good at towing a 2019 Escape 5.0TA 5th Wheel trailer
Thank you sir once again great review if I wasn't 6 ft 6 inches tall I would definitely buy one but I will be getting an F-150 very soon SuperCrew of course but it is a great little truck I think it would do well in the market
Its not very little at all, almost (about 3/4) the size of an F150 and a ridiculous enough price tag that many will just buy the F150.
Sadly i think they did a good job. Great series guys.
Lol why sadly 😂😂
QUESTION : Is the 10 speed transmission the same as the one in the F150 or a smaller scaled down one ??? And does it have a Aluminum body/bed like the F150 ??? Thanks and happy New Year
It's the same 10R80 transmission with a different torque converter. The hood, and tailgate are aluminum for sure, not sure about the rest.
I got one and Love it !!! Chicago Il...
BTBR, did you ask or did they say if it can be flat towed without mods? Gut feel is that it can't be.
They say it can be
Jan Schönwälder What did you get for the trade?
Oh something completely different a hyundai h350 that's a van like the Mercedes sprinter
Jan Schönwälder I thought maybe you went for a Toyota or Nissan truck and I was going to ask how that went. Has the Hyundai product been reliable?
Almost a hundred thousand miles and no issues at all
Could a Ranger tow a small toy hauler? Fully loaded with water, fuel, two motorcycles, and stocked with food/bedding it’d be around 6,200lbs... would that be too much??
I would like to know this myself. In the market for an RV, especially a toy hauler hauling 4-wheeler
And the same engine in every trim so why pay all that money for a Lariat when the base will do the same thing
Thank you
Good job!...very informative as always!
And here I was worried about a 3500lb trailer with my 2020 Ranger with tow package.
Nice!! Great series!!
will the ranger ecoboost reach the Mexican market?
ZR2 or FX4? Not buying a Taco.
Do you have the dimensions of the Bed? Would a 2011 Ranger bed cover fit on the 2019? Probably not but just curious. Good review.
No sir, unless it's the global ranger
@@BigTruckBigRV do you know the dimensions length and width can't find them anywhere I have looked so far.
Other then the size difference does it drive similarly to your F450 or is the F450 a totally different animal?
It's a totally different animal. The f450 has a significantly firmer and more aggressive ride pattern. The ranger feels far more like a new half ton truck. First time you hit a bump or pothole you'll realize that more than ever
Well all I have electronic stuff they can keep I buy a truck the only thing I want is cruise control a radio and AC nothing else none of that other fancy stuff don't need it don't want it
Ford F 150 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
can the new Ranger be a toad behind a class A . and how?
Floyd Bailey a 4X4 should. My 2015 f150 was able to
I don't think it will turn into a toad.
Awesome video 👍🏽
How was the ride and handling compared to the Ridgeline?
The Ridgeline felt firmer and more planted in terms of overall stability. More like driving a sedan than a pickup truck. The ranger felt more like a half ton pickup truck which clearly is delineated by the body on frame design
Cool
wow,,had to wait 8 minutes for nothing
🇺🇸 👍🏻👍🏻 Well Done 👍🏻👍🏻 🇺🇸
i'm sticking with the Ridgeline
How to find the right size trailer.
Step 1: trade it in for a real truck
Step 2: Quit trolling on midsize truck review videos.
Step 3: Stop crying snowflake tears.
Step 4: Mind my own f**king business, like how I want other people to do to me, and let my fellow man drive whatever the hell he wants too.
Okie Rider not a bad list.
