  • Every worthy, baptized member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can and should receive a patriarchal blessing, which provides inspired personal direction from God. There are many common questions surrounding patriarchal blessings: Why should I get one? What will it say? Why does my lineage matter? With whom can I share it? How should I prepare? In this episode, professor Brad Wilcox shares insights to these questions and more from his research and publication on patriarchal blessings.
Each year, Brigham Young University Religious Education professors produce hundreds of publications on subjects related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This podcast brings this research into one place to enlighten the everyday seeker of truth. Interviewing the author, we discuss why the study was done, why it matters, and why the professor chooses to be both a scholar and a disciple. This is Y Religion: Research to Enlighten Your Mind.
Y Religion podcast episodes are available every two weeks and can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pandora, and on the web at rsc.byu.edu/media/y-religion

And we LOVE you right here in Auckland, New Zealand. I saw how you made Premila from 8th Ward feel so special, and how you made me feel super special, an old Maori lady, in that you remembered what I thought was a passing comment in your very busy schedule, to have a photo taken with all the presenters of TOFW during your visit with Sheri Dew and others. I treasure that photo above most others that I have, because I felt your love for an insignificant old lady, who could have easily been ignored and no one would have cared except her. Yet, like with the woman who touched the Saviour’s robe, you felt a woman’s embarrassment at having been rejected, and next day, restored her belief in humanity, when you made something happen. It’s a more complicated story than I have written, but know that your care for ‘one of the very least’ was evident, in the most positive of ways, that day. If no one else, which would not be true, was impacted by your kindness and indeed public acknowledgment, as in Premila’s case, and in a very personal sense in my case, on that day, the two of us were definitely not on that list. Thank you, Brother Wilcox.

I have had my Patriarchal Blessing for 39 years. It wasn’t until I listen to this podcast that I understood what seemed to be a mystery. I went back and underline that part, and looked at it with new eyes and new understanding. I am so grateful.

While listening to this podcast, I literally went back to the Church's Website to re-read my patriarchal blessings. In truth, the words don't change but there came some additional meaning when I read it this time. Thank you for this podcast.

I really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing. I really appreciated the comments that you didn’t need to be perfect just like you don’t need to be perfect in taking the sacrament. That comment, and tho I was worthy to receive my blessing; I just have never felt “good enough”, this just relieved years or a heart ache I carried around in my life backpack.

My blessing tells me that I am born ofy tribe. It distinguishes that I am not adopted into my tribe. It is true that it doesn't matter if you are born of your tribe or adopted because we still become one with God, Christ, and our tribe whether we're grafted into the house of Israel or a literal descendant.

I loved this! As I prepare to leave for work, I listened twice to it. Loving, kind, informative, real, natural and filled with the Spirit. Now who does not want all of that? The last days are ripening, and my mom would say, and let us each prepare to be more valiant and righteous. President Nelson says, “ a higher and holier way”. Have a good day everyone.

I got my patriarchal blessing when I was 15 and I really didn't pay much attention till I was 18 and really converted to the gospel. I want younger people to know not to take for granted that guidance and help that the Lord offers by having patriarchal blessings. It has helped me my whole life always.
