  • Lehi, Nephi, Amalickiah, Korihor-These are just a few of the many names readers encounter in the Book of Mormon. Just where did these names come from? Research has shown that individuals have certain naming preferences. If Joseph Smith were making up the Book of Mormon, would its names reflect natural naming preferences and patterns? In this episode, professor Brad Wilcox takes us into his decade of research on this subject and its fascinating findings.
Each year, Brigham Young University Religious Education professors produce hundreds of publications on subjects related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This podcast brings this research into one place to enlighten the everyday seeker of truth. Interviewing the author, we discuss why the study was done, why it matters, and why the professor chooses to be both a scholar and a disciple. This is Y Religion: Research to Enlighten Your Mind.

This was fascinating... I really love the emphasis on trying to find a common phonoprint between Book of Mormon names and it just not being there. I know the Book of Mormon is true, and the more I learn the more I have that fact confirmed for me.

Wonderful presentation. I will say that the faith crisis I have had was centered more on existing pretexts of something divinely revealed that I also cherish as types and shadows. I did not become discouraged, because I know this is the Lords pattern for the preparation of prophets and learning line upon line. Much had been revealed already which was distorted, prophets see the distortion and can sift the truth from it according to their understanding and the gift of the spirit.
If names are the subject then we may look at Zenos, and Zenoch, which could be argued to be a combination of Enoch, Enos and two Greek philosophers named Zeno, those philosophers by the way have a life history comparable to Christ in some aspects. Christ takes the high road Zeno and Zeno take the way of the world. Or the similarities of Gilgamesh and the Noah and Jacob stories. One could say that biblical writers were writing Semetic genealogy and history into a known story format like how we may compare something in General Conference to a story from Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. Overall there is purpose in what the Lord prescribes to be scripture. Christ may have studied or learned of various philosophies or story of philosophers and made a point to illustrate the true teaching when a similar circumstance presented itself, so that it could be understood by not just the Jew but a variety of gentiles aswell. Even Pilot sees this when speaking with Christ. And Christ would not even have to know that was what He was doing either, just as those who condemned Him had likely no idea that they were authorizing a lamb for sacrifice, the lamb being Christ. We know prior to Joseph Smith that many had visions, a country was prepared, a canal was built, a printing press invented, philosophies taught and discussed at Dartmouth and in the Smith home, all prepared the hearts and minds for the restoration and to call on another people if we would not be faithful. This is what must be expounded on to help people in faith crisis to press forward in faith and keep those covenants and part the veil that their understanding may be propelled to new heights.
I haven’t a single worldly or academic credential, but a study of names is an interesting branch, but it is a lack of understanding the character of God and how He works. We can have the most sounds scholarship of all these things but will avail nothing to someone who is in faith crisis. Thank you again.

Interesting that the Nephite names are different from the Mulekite when the have the same origin from Jerusalem.
