  • This week marked an inflection point in our history, with the United States Constitution being tested in new and dangerous ways. MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin explains why Donald Trump’s battle for “absolute” immunity and calls for a crackdown on Pro-Palestinian campus protests pose a direct threat to our constitutional norms.

Good post. Everything tRump is accused of doing; his lawyers are arguing should be legal. How can the SCOTUS GOP judges NOT consider the facts of the Trump crimes at the hearing, but make a ruling on the hypothetical basis when the facts and laws are right in their faces? The SCOTUS decision should be a unanimous NO, a president does NOT have absolute immunity. The GOP appointed SCOTUS justices are an 'imminent' threat to the constitution and democracy.

Republicans scream about their 1st Amendment Rights but are on a hair trigger to use extreme force to silence those who speak against their ideological position. This time it is MAGA Mike calling on Biden to invoke the Insurrection Act on college kids around the country, i.e. just like Republican Governor James Allen Rhodes mobilized the State National Guard to attend the Kent State University protest in 1970, which resulted in 4 deaths. Thank God that Biden is actually doing all he can to minimise the loss of civilian life in this conflict, and it would seem, also at home. He does not, after all, run Israel or Palestine.

It seems that in the USA politicians are allowed to lie and defame without any consequences. The occasional lawyer like Giuiliani may be successfully prosecuted for lying defamation but he seems to be an exception. Jeez, even liars like Chesebro, Ellis and Powell who admitted their lies are still free and haven't even been disbarred. Freedom of speech surely needs limits, especially when uttered by politicians and lawmakers.

DC barely has any self-governance; even 'decisions' it makes in its city council can be overridden by the President. The House has control over DC's budget, not operations) NGs from outside any polity (e.g. DC) cannot enter that polity except by request from the head of that polity. That's why both the VA and MD NGs were activated and waiting at the DC border but were unable to enter. I don't like him, but in some ways, Pence stepped way out of his political boundaries by requesting activation of the DC NG but only after it was obvious that Trump wasn't going to do it.

    Kent State shootings - May 4, 1970
The Kent State shootings were the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard on the Kent State University campus, when National Guardsmen opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War.
Who ordered the National Guard to shoot at Kent State?
Kent's political leadership requested that the Republican governor of Ohio, James Rhodes, send National Guard troops.
Why is the Kent State shooting important?
Four students were killed, nine wounded, and a fissure exposed in American society that shaped politics into the Trump era. To large parts of the country, the Kent State massacre was a shocking and seminal event - American soldiers gunning down white students was unthinkable until it happened.
