Hunter Gatherer Primitive Four Day Survival Challenge. Part Two.

- In this video, I am in Wiltshire with Wilderness Survival Skills, taking part in the Hunter Gatherer Challenge, a four day, four night solo primitive survival challenge using very limited kit. Armed with just a belt knife, a folding saw, a billy can, 3 metres of paracord and a few essential emergency items, I head off into the forest to build a shelter and bed, make fire, forage for food, make a primitive hunting bow (including a knapped flint arrow head) and live as comfortably as I can using the natural materials found around me.
This is part two of the challenge, the last two days and nights. Day three and I’m feeling like I’m settling in to my woodland home - I have established routines and I know where to go to find certain resources and wild foods, my shelter is improved and I start to think about making life a bit more comfortable, starting with my bed. I also begin to make a primitive hunting weapon. One of the briefs for the challenge is to think about long term survival and to make a weapon capable of catching game in order to provide me with a protein rich diet available year round. My chosen weapon is the bow. A target contest along with the other participants gives me a chance of
‘winning’ edible prizes to add to the pot.
This challenge has been a thorough enjoyable and rewarding experience, I have learnt such a lot about primitive living, but also about myself and my capabilities. It has certainly be tough, both physically and mentally but after all it is a challenge! If anybody is looking for a challenge to test their existing bushcraft/survival skills in a controlled environment with the backup of an experience survival expert (and a bloody good bloke!) look no further than Joe O’Leary and his Wilderness Survival Skills School.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

How many people think Simon should have a TV series?
12 of us since your comment was born an hour ago. Would you believe I thought at first he's just one more bored couch bushcrafter? I could have not made a bigger mistake.
@@jakabiksz7628 This is true, his videos are better than some similar programmes i've seen on TV.
@@jakabiksz7628 Indeed. Simon is a very skilled and competent person. His other "how to" videos for various projects prove that too.
The tempo and ambiance of his presentation and the interspersed locked off shots just observing life pass by is certainly reminiscent of the late, great Jack Hargreaves who I used to watch as a kid. Selfishly I'd prefer Simon to stay here as TV is far too much a medium of manipulation. I think we'd see too many concocted drama's. BUT for the greater good and to give a standing ovation to a thoroughly entertaining chap, yes I'd second your suggestion.
I discussed it with him a year ago, but I think he thought I was winding him up. I spent a decade or so making television and he has a natural gift and real potential.
Anyone else would have baited us In with a screenshot of his face all worried and a title like “ I almost died !”
Due to the branch incident but not our Simon !! He’s a real one !
Glad your guardian Angel prevented it from hitting your shelter and you !
GOD bless you Simon
I think these two might be my favorites.
This has got to be one of my favourite series on CZcams by far. It’s so real and you really bring us on a journey. Thanks Simon!
Thanks Nathan! 👍👍

If you ever come over to the US, some place you might like for overnight or a couple days worth of wild camping is out in Royalston Massachusetts as you go past Orange MA. center.
There's a nice area called Tulley Lake up there which's man made by the Army Corps of engineers but has multiple islands you can pull up on & camp out on.
If you do, be careful of what I jokingly call "Ant Island", It's the biggest one out in the lake & @ the top, it seems the whole thing is a huge ant mound that has biting ants that look about the size of American carpenter ants but are white & black & don't seem to like anybody hanging around for long.
As a bonus, you may find my ex GF's pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses up there which we believe the ants might've used for solar tech
@@simonablokeinthewoods
Another place is Erving State Forest which is public camping but, not too sure what they allow for bushcrafting if any at all.
This might be a place for a tent, but not one if those drive in campers with a toilet in it where there's no where to hook it up.( There are bathrooms & an 2 places for showering if you bring American quarters to spend on a hot shower, it only costs about 50 cents American)
Only possible problems are 1- @ this moment, It's closed due to Covid BS.
2- it is an area for black bear & the woods go all the way into Vermont & / possibly Canada if you're up for a good hike.
This was a top draw watch...i need more of this❤
Finger 351 has a great idea. Your character and demeanor is so mild mannered. You’re extremely likable. Your a bloke every person wants to be friends with. God bless you Simon. Safe travels my friend. 🙏🏼⛺️😎 Roland USA
Thanks mate!! 😁
One of your best videos Simon….. Thanks 👍
Man that feed at the end must have tasted like heaven
It certainly did!! 😋😂
I'd bet that that tree limb falling so close has helped "free up" your number 2 lol Absolutely stellar video Simon...thank you again for taking this old woman out in the wild where I loved to be
part 2 didn't disappoint! excellent stuff. you certainly didn't get bored. and the dramatic ending! haha. well done mate
Thanks dude! 😁👍🌳
Simon, I hope you never tire of making these videos. Selfish of me, of course, but that's how much I enjoy them. 👍👏🏾🙂
Thank you!!
Scratch that. A week of survival after getting lost ALONE. Love you!❤
Baby Bell...makes it all worth it! Cool bow. Amazing arrow head.
Perfect start to the weekend and thanks for showing us the "father and son bow" amazing first time I seen that!! thanks for taking us along Simon😎
The good Lord in his infinite wisdom, decided to provide you with wood for your fire while you were weak and in inclement weather. God must favor you! i appreciate your time and efforts in order to educate and entertain us. thank you.
I definitely agree, Simon would be great on tv, and this video was amazing, a lot of guys on CZcams make flint knapping look really hard and super Simon made it look easy, awesome 👍
Yes! I agree, he's for better than some of the junk they put on. This is educational. So good to watch him, What a smashing bloke he is, top-notch !!!!!!
You got me all sad when you said you felt sad about leaving "your home." Then a widow maker came down and I thought, run Forest!
Great series and keep doing your stuff. Thoroughly enjoyable!!!
Thanks Tim! Nature has little ways of reminding us who’s boss! 😂🌳
Simon, the bloke in the wood. The man picks up and tidys up the woods, drinks nettle tea, shoots arrows and s###s in the wood.
Brought back memories back in the days of my youth with wood fires, of putting potatoes directly on the camp fire embers. Tastes absolute lovely. lovely crispy skin.
That was a very close call. It reminds of trek in rainforest. I heard a crack and falling branch thru the canopy but I couldn't see where it's coming down and for me to run away from. Standstill and hope for the best.
Great video mister.
Thank you! Yes, that was scary! I didn’t see any hazards in the trees when I checked - just gores to show, you can never be too careful! 👍
Just watched both films again.....my opinion hasn’t changed ! A great achievement 👍
Just watched part 1 and 2 back to back, absolutely brilliant stuff, the level of work that goes into simply surviving and you showed your knowledge and skills throughout. Keep up the good work, I love your videos.
Thanks Sean! 👍
Could have gone on watching you for hours... Thank you so much for sharing. Made me smile to see your excitement about the potato with cheese. 👍🏻
Thank you! That was the best spud I’ve ever eaten!! 😂😋
Hello Simon, your baked potato in the billy can. How long does it take to cook ? Roughly.
Another great video, thank you for sharing.
This was obviously autumn with berries and nuts. Makes me wonder what there is to eat in other seasons? Great films, totally engrossed.
Wow so lucky with regards to the big log falling so close. Also I agree with the previous comment, Simon should have a TV series.
I've been looking out for part 2 every day, it was a nice treat to watch tonight after my day.
Again another entertaining video and I learnt about more survival skills, e.g alternative bow style, arrow fletching without feather...
Cheers Simon.
Thank you Mal! 👍😁
Thank you for this video and for part 1. This was so fascinating to watch and I've learnt a lot just from watching. I'll be checking out Joe's courses too.
👋👋👋Simon, I know this is an older vib but wow!!! all I can say is wow !!!!! you continue to encourage me old vid or new vid !!! yes hunter gather life was hard but well respected !!!! Hunter gather it gives you a new feeling of self-respect as well as The most respect for mother Earth and all with in her , we are pushed to our limits but we survive !!! what's better to talk about ??? then our experience surviving !!!! 💙's to you Simon!!! keep it going !!!!
Absolutely fantastic, thank you Simon.
Hi Uncle Simon. That was a close one! Always lookup before setting camp.
Love your vids man👍 much love from New Hampshire USA
That limb falling startled the crap out of me!! 😜
Wow..that’s all I can say.. what a challenge.
just getting to part two here...ive seen plenty of your vids but for some reason this 'series' slipped under my radar, great so far, love the realism without trying to do the ridiculous "bear Grylls" thing
Ace,thanks for that, food for thought in these abnormal times.👍
Thoroughly enjoyed that series Simon. Going to have to make a father son bow next time i'm out. That widow maker was a lucky escape bud, you must have had an angel on your shoulder. Cheers for the uploads, off to watch another now 🙂👍
That was the fastest Babybel unwrapping I've ever witnessed!!! That wonderfully roasted potato with perfectly melted cheese looked delightful. I'll try it the next time I go camping!
It was like a taste of heaven I tell you!! 😁👍
Well done Simon only discovered you a few weeks ago but have purchased a few items and a tent and next spring intend getting out and about .With a busy life watching your videos recharge my batteries so keep safe and keep it going my friend.
Simon,
I believe that as time passes you will realize your four-day experience will benefit you in unexpected ways. One cannot help but have expectations as one goes into such an endeavor but often what is expected does not seem to unfold, as imagined, during and shortly after the experience. Something far greater will, over time, sprout and bloom and potentially enhance your life. It takes its time and comes in its own season. Many seemingly insignificant thoughts and feelings may lead to lots of things such as a heightened sense of gratitude, just for one small example. That is one of the more obvious ones, though. There is much more.
I admire your courage and your great attitude in meeting and greeting the challenges. I felt for you and the withdrawal that you may have been enduring as you went without your delicious foods, your hot chocolate and your daily slab of beef with all the trimmings, not to mention that morning cuppa. When I camp, my morning cup of coffee is a religous ceremony. I cannot help but think that you will be rewarded. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you so much! I’m sure you are right - I already feel that my life and the way I see and think about certain things has been changed - for the better. I feel enriched, and I’m sure other feelings will open up to me over time, as you say. 🙂👍
I've always said Simon is the best All round Bush crafter on CZcams. His knowledge is endless and comes across as brilliant humble bloke. Since the LK35 Review 2 years ago to now has been AMAZING for us viewers. Thanks Simon for all the video's you've made, and we look forward to seeing plenty more in the future🙂
🏕💥🏕💥🏕💥🏕💥🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕
#bestbushcrafter💯
Thank you Harvey! 👍😁
and there are pillocks larking about like idiots, with millions of subscribers. guess us intellectuals are in the youtube minority
When we are forced to be in a survival lifestyle our attitude is the greatest game changer. Remain positive, stop and think, and don’t give up because of a failure. Learning is the greatest achievement with Bushcrafting.
Another revisit! Awesome primitive skills video. Four days is a true test. It is long enough for some stress to build up.
Great two part video again buddy, widow makers certainly wake you up quickly. I think it’s great how you do your videos.
I very much enjoyed these videos. I know by day 4 that corn and potato was very welcome as well as the stew pot.loads of nutrition and flavor. Very well done sir.
Hey Simon! Been looking forward to part II. You did really Well, at least as far as I can tell. I love that Joe has a big brekky there for you all at the end.
Excellent video.
What fantastic memories!
Really great video. Thank you very much. All the best from Denmark
SOOOOOOOOO relaxing to watch/ Thank you from Poland/
I really enjoyed this series very much. You did an awesome job throughout. I have never tried the bow drill. I have an idea where to start from CZcams videos, but from how much you struggled it does not look easy. Good job on conquering that task. It obviously meant everything to survive this challenge. Now I know that widow makers are serious business! I am glad it did not hit your shelter. Since I found your vlog, I have been following it for a while and have recommended it to others. Thank you for your content. I am learning a lot. Cheers, Doug.
I audibly gasped when you pulled the potato apart with the melted cheese lol. You do an excellent job of sharing your emotions and thoughts, really drew me in. Cheers!
Thank you! I never knew how good cheese was until that moment!!
Hi Simon, absolutely love your videos! Wish you’d keep the microphone a wee bit further away from your gob when you’re eating though. Starting to tear the sofa to pieces every time I hear you snuffling, masticating and swallowing whatever morsel of food you’ve managed to get your paws on! Apologies in advance 😅
These two videos were outstanding. Brought back great memories of survival training on the Gulf coast and SERE school in winter mountains. Well done Simon.
Utterly brilliant. Great work. To do that course AND make a coherent video...I echo all the positive comments.
Great video thanks from Oklahoma👍
Fantastic!!!! Thanks Simon.
What a challenge that was. The human body can adapt to any environment. Survival is what it's all about when pushed to those limits you either ride or die. You did a great job Simon you learn well. Now I don't know about that tree in the end but that most certainly would have been a sleepless night. Great video once again. Next time Hughes a Tree😆
ABOUT TIME someone mentions they need to take a number 2 in these types of videos! Awesome challenge, keep it up!
Thanks👍This was really cool. Thank God that widow maker did not hit your shelter. Keep moving. 🏕
Congratulations on completing the challenge and filming it whilst under duress. It is often a challenge in itself filming, but when you're cold, wet, under nourished, suffering from sleep deprivation and CONSTIPATED then that is a different kettle of fish. I learned the 'hard' way what 7 days of constipation can do to you, headaches, loss of appetite, not thinking straight. After four nights you moved on from Bushcraft to what Joe's Profile states, FIELDCRAFT. You have proven enough throughout your films that you can make almost anything out of nothing (I would never in a Million Years have thought of that Bow configuration,) albeit, many folk discover that they don't have enough 'Moral Fibre' to see it through whilst out in the elements and the going gets tough. I think these two films proved beyond any doubt that you have it in abundance. Also, an important point to all Preppers/Survivalists as depicted on the weighing scales, make sure you're able to notch your belt as you will lose Stones/Kilos. 10/10 from the Brit in Bulgaria Panel. Now, let's get back to some relaxing Canoe trips with Maggie baling overboard after Swans. 😉
Thanks buddy! And good advise about the belt too!! 😁👍
I'm loving your videos! That branch falling must've been freaky!!
As a hunter gatherer you were brilliant at trapping and killing a baby Bel and baked potato real good video my mate Chris across the road is spitting mage of you including the hat
Very glad you where not injured but it does give you a bit of a fright
This was absolutely awesome. Thank you
So glad I stumbled upon your channel, I love survival camping, also, I spent 3 years of my career in your beautiful country (RAF Lakenheath) and can’t wait to return some day! Cheers!!
God bless your good guardian angels. That was way too close for comfort. Thank you for taking us along on this adventure and congratulations on your successful bow and arrow. You deserve to be very proud.
Hi Simon, 😊 thanks for another interesting two part video, the weather looked pretty grim at the beginning , but you put the effort into making the shelter better and it paid off. Your food wasn't too bad, and foraging helped , the goodies you won must have tasted wonderful after nettles, etc, I noticed in part two a shot of some King Alfreds cakes underneath a log, if they were dry they would have taken and sustained a better ember from you bow drill, but full mark's for persistence, and getting a fire going, what I take from these videos is you can't beat having good basic kit, but the main thing is having a good mental attitude, and a will to keep going no matter what. Cheers mate, this was very enjoyable, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
Baked potato and babybel, What more could you want ,lol. Great video as always.
😋👍
Wow. Great video! Glad that the branch found a landing spot away from your shelter!
Me too!! 😂
Nice adventure, and great spirit solving problems 👏🏽
Well done very nice watch. :) Thanks for the share.
Grows in my garden like weeds, wood sorrel. it spreads everywhere in sheltered area's, my father used to set snares years ago to help feed my brothers and me, but he always checked them reguarily so as not to cause suffering
Brilliant 👏 👏 loved it Simon

The firewood comes to you! Good one Simon.
A great course Simon. glad you had a rewarding time - and didn't get squashed!!!!!!
Definitely an adventure, the breakfast was well earned, could nearly smell it!
Hi Simon. I’ve watched this video before but it didn’t show my like for some reason. Anyway I did enjoy it very much. I can’t imagine how gruelling it must have been. Thanks again regards Luke.
I've always wanted to test my skills this way. Good on you for going for it Simon! Much enjoyed this video. Thanks so much for taking the time to film and share. It's greatly appreciated and inspiring.
