Knowing what to feed a bird of prey may be an obvious question but one of the most common questions I get asked by the public and aspiring falconers is ‘What do birds of prey eat?’ so maybe its not actually a straightforward question. Preparing your animals diet is a massively important step when owning an exotic species, and if done incorrectly can lead to a wide array of issues such as metabolic diseases, deficiencies, just generally poor condition, and even death.

Can you explain about where you source your foods from and what is an average monthly cost to feed say a Harris's Hawk. I'm trying to research all needs and costs but have yet to find a clear indication feed wise. Many thanks!
I buy them from a local falconer, who is supplied by a company called honeybrook.
I pay £14 for a box of 250 day old chicks, that would probably last a Harris hawk about 2 months

How do you work out weight wise what the bird needs in feed in relation to their weight?

Thank you, I think it comes more from an understanding of animal anatomy but I appreciate that. I’ve had a strike for music once, it annoys me that certain apps or websites say it’s free to use on CZcams and then you end up with a strike! I had to re-edit an entire video because of it

Another great video, I also saw it the first time but still having trouble with understanding how you weigh out the food, do you start with higher grams of feed and bring it down slowly over a few days until your bird becomes more responsive to it? But obviously take it back up slightly as your bird becomes fitter?

I will add a video about weight management to my list of things to make videos about, I don’t weigh any food out and never have, it’s more a case of knowing your bird and keeping track of its weight

Loving the videos, just one question, do you only feed on the glove or do you give larger food items in the mews also?
I prefer not to give them food in their housing in case they get defensive over it, the only time I do is when they are taking a break for the moult
@@MercerFalconry I have a new bird but have no real history with it similar to the HH you did the video on. This one will not feed on glove at all, or indeed if you are within sight of her. Any tips for getting her going?

Ah, I buy it from the local butcher and freeze it in cut up pieces so I just take a piece out to defrost the day before I use it

I'm not sure if my mom will be ok with it and I'm not sure if I can look him or her after the way they need to be I go to school at 8:00 in the morning and return at 5:00 in the afternoon so i dont think i can manage having a falcon but I'm willing to take a chance still planning on how he or she is going to eat while I'm in school but I plant to ride home every day at lunch to feed him

Excellent video! I'm curious can a Harris's hawk eat whole frozen mice or rats, with out the guts removed? I ask this because I know that maybe the mice might have some mice feeder pellets in the stomach.

I'm interested in falconry so I've been watching a pair of orange breast falcon or bat falcon they look similar so I'm not really sure they have two young ones know and there Bout to fly soon not yet they still have white feathers on there head's

Day old chicks are still available to me, but as the video shows there is plenty of options

I only feed my Harris hawk once a day and she has to fly for all her food!
It can also be bad feeding several times a day as they may get a sour crop as some food may not have digested properly, 1 feed a day is enough
Feeding several times a day can also increase the risk of impaction in the intestine as new food too soon can push the cast back down. You should wait 12 to 18 hours after a meal until he's cast before the next meal
I know a lot of people will say it nasty and gross but it's part of everyday life for food processing plants.

No, here in the UK it is illegal to feed any live vertebrate, it’s also just incredibly cruel

There isn’t an answer to that and it would be dangerous to try and give an answer, every hawk is individual with the amount of food they need and the amount changes with each individual depending on what they are doing

Videos on CZcams are not enough to prepare you to get a hawk, you should try and find a mentor or volunteer at a local falconry centre, good luck!

I can’t say I’ve measured but every pigeon is an individual so it will be a different amount from each bird
Is it vital to give them other foods? I give my kes day old cockerel chicks and vitamin supplements every week. She’s fit and healthy. I tried her on rabbit but she didn’t eat it. She’ll have mice but they’re W but expensive
No a bird can live entirely off day old chicks as it’s a full body and so contains everything they need, I just like to include variation

I'm 16 years old and I love birds and reptiles I often catch snakes and loose them back keep them for maybe a week and let them go I take baby birds out of there nest and help rase them and let them go when its Tim e to fly whether they want to go or not is up to them im suppose to be going on a trip for the weekend to be a bartender for my grandparents me and I have a DJ that will be playing so hes going with me I'm still not sure if I should take out kne of the young before I leave and take him or her with me I'll decide on Saturday when I'm not working I have to go to classes at a school for 3 hours I'll no then

That very much depends on the bird and what you are doing with the bird
