At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”

Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

Again, I wish more leaders in other professions thought like this! Many desk jobs expect you to sacrifice a real life for the job too - long hours, weekends, depleted energy to spend on the people and things we love. We all have to pay bills. But yes, we need to be aware of what's most important, and make healthy choices. Martin should start giving talks to big business. So much about the balance with nature, doing good, mentorship, the positive affirmation required to develop relationships of trust with raptors, applies across the board!

This is such an important lesson for new falconers. I was blessed with extremely supportive parents and friends who love my birds as much as I do and regularly help with them. I've always tried to make as much time for my human family as my bird family, and that's so important. I believe pretty strongly as sponsors we need to help potential apprentices realize if falconry isn't for them right now with their family and life situation. There's always another time to get into falconry!

Such a great point. After reading H is for Hawk, I came to this conclusion on my own. Reading her journey with a new bird, wow - it’s all encompassing. Fascinating but certainly not just a hobby - such a great point you made. And you married very well. Susan is a treasure.

Martin how true. There are many jobs like medicine and law that have engulfed a individual almost 100% causing them to lose their families and wives. Falconry is a lifestyle meant to be a part of your life not take it over. Very important point you’ve made👍

Falconry, there is a lot on the scales once you get into it, I certainly at times feel very tethered, especially during hunting season.
I though am fortunate to be semiretired and can hunt every day.
But when illness comes your way, you are still the falconer and that can be very difficult, fortunately my wife is great and can prepare and feed the meat , not everyone’s cup of tea for sure.
Great advice , and love listening to your experience, invaluable.

I came to understand that from watching all your vids. You basically cannot do anything much, you cannot easily go on holiday, take a week off, and probably not even get ill. No matter what you gotta tend to the birds. Not something to think lightly about. With a partner who's not fully into this and supporting this it can't and shouldn't be done. I can understand many underestimate this.

I have Macaws, and no family, no wife and no children. So my entire life is based upon them. Very few humans interest me at this point. Since I am a doctor and practice from home, my patients are also able to enjoy and appreciate them.

Hi David. We think the Kestrel? That was a rehab bird that almost became a wildlife ambassador because of a wing issue. But he turned it around and we were able to release him back to the wild. Here's the playlist about him: czcams.com/play/PLefV3vhHIC2q8M5JS6-io6gr4EZ8ORh43.html

Well that was interesting especially now that j have just started .I never thought like that but I do have I hope haha good wife and me a good husband ☺️ 14years so far but I laughed or worried when you said about the family. I told my wife I was away out to the bird 🐦 next thing I heard this little voice coming from my daughter finishing what I was saying to her mum but in a weird voice it said> Aw is that you away to feed the peregrine.. falcon.... 😆 🤣 lmao but lesson I got just now is you need to watch your kids don't become jealous of it! I try to involve mine always all my kids well 3 lol it was my little girl who is 6 that said this so yeah very true and what you wouldn't think about so thank you for highlighting this bit of very important information.
I have a passage peregrine looking for an American kestrel here in Scotland can't get it I'm stuck of you know anything I could do to gey one? I'm trying to get a buzzard female next week .
