I was taught to anneal copper gaskets before re-use. Heat to cherry red and quench. I've since been told that quenching or air cooling makes no difference, they both reverse the work hardening. Enjoyed that, feller. 👍

yes we always used to heat the old gardner head gaskets to cherry red and just let them cool in air

Whitworth spanners and sockets are listed on ebay and amazon. On those Villers the points should be fully open on TDC.

I may have been misinformed, but I was always given to believe that to get the correct ignition timing, the piston should be at TDC, with the flywheel timing pointers aligned with each other. There is some logic behind that too. If we consider that the only part to have a TDC (or a BDC for that matter) is the piston - the flywheel just rotates, it has no up or down! So logically, TDC pertains only to the piston, and the mark on the flywheel shows us where it needs to be when the piston is at TDC.
I have to admit, JAP engines are more in my line, but I do remember fighting with a Villiers, way back in the early seventies, and in the end, it was the dad of one of the lads at school who helped us to time that puppy up. It ran well after that! We tried setting it up as you did, but all ours would do was to rip the starter rope out of your hands. We fiddled and twiddled with that thing for days, sometimes we could get it to fire, but it had no power, most often we just got our fingers ripped, and sometimes when we could get it to run, the exhaust glowed red hot. Only When Nidge's dad got involved, did it run right, and in truth, in our youthful ignorance, we couldn't find the timing mark on the crankcase. But, Nidge's dad knew where to look.

As a matter of interest what did you set the points gap to 12/18/20 tho ?, was the piston 1/8" btdc ? it all makes a differance . good luck with getting it going .
