Leman Russ after the Horus Heresy, parties with the Vlka Fenryka, says his speech and while on the way to the warp all the alcohol catches up to him.
He slowly but surely slowly wakes, realizing he is bound up, his armour is missing. He also notices that he on the back of the horse carriage.
As he wakes he notices a man in primitive armour. His voice, appearance and mannerisms seem Fenrisian.

Russ was so surprised and impressed he immediately swore fealty to the Emperor as soon as he regained consciousness.

Perhaps Leman Russ thought to use the lack of time in the warp to preserve himself inside the warp. He won't age, he won't die. He just waits and keeps watch outside. When the time comes, maybe Russ intends to exit the warp in order to stand beside his dying men to their last breath.

While theres overwhelming evidence to support this over my own theories, I always hoped that Russ would overcome his short temper and eventually be more like the norse god Tyr. As a more judicial warrior, russ would likely use the spear given to him by the emperor (which previously he was too hot-headed to appreciate). Maybe him losing his armor is supposed to be like tyr losing his hand. One could imagine that he made some deal with a warp entity to relinquish his armor to save fenris (or the imperium) from breaking, as tyr did with his hand and fenrir. Which may explain how it ended up where it did.
Again this is basically just speculation in trying to tie russ in with norse mythology... mostly because I think it would just be interesting. Additionally I never really saw russ as becoming an Odin type, and most of the Odin references come from his father: allfather, and the spear he gave to russ bearing the same name as Odin's (gungnir). Wheras the emperor creates russ to be his warrior component (like thor or tyr). However the emperor giving gungnir to russ instead of a hammer, implies to me that he intended Russ to become a more judicial warrior....
But the allfathers plans have failed before...

And, unpopular opinion, I think Magnus would have won in a one on one duel. In Thousand Sons, their fight clearly shows that Magnus was having to not only fight Russ, but was also keeping the Space Wolves legion at bay single handedly and preparing the teleportation spell that would save his legion. Not to mention having to deal with Russ's wolves, who were instrumental in preventing Magnus from killing Russ.

Russ and his best Wolf Guards were called into the Eye to flank the daemons attacking the Terran Webway. They met up with the 13th Company and the remaining Custodes and Eldar and have slowly been pushing the daemons away from the Terran gate and repairing the warp rifts, thereby negating the need for the Emperor to sit on the Golden Throne and freeing him to once again lead humanity when he is restored to life.
Russ's forces were subsequently bolstered by the very first Primaris Marines, which then freed Russ to dispatch the 13th Company back to the material realm to assist after seeing the birth of the Cicatrix Maledictum, with the vagaries of time in the Warp allowing the bulk of the 13th Company to arrive PRIOR to the start of the 13th Black Crusade in effort to buy time for the final success of Russ and his forces in clearing the Webway and reviving the Emperor. This is also why the Eldar despatched a team to revive Guilliman, knowing he alone had the tactical acumen and skill to combat Chaos in the interim.
During this time, Russ was afflicted by the Wulfen curse and mastered it, thus gaining either the ability to shift between Primarch and Wulfen-Primarch form, or exist permanently as a Wulfen-Primarch form with his mental faculties intact who can best the most savage of the Daemon Primarchs in single combat.

Obviously, I am very late to the party and I apologize for the long post. This thought has been in my head for a while and it is either a crazy idea or brilliant, and I am honestly torn as to which it is.
So hear me out on this one, it's definately a strange theory:
Leman Russ had stated he was dying in the "Wolftime" speech (maybe real death, maybe Wolfen curse, strong arguments for many ideas). He departed with a small group of the Wolves. Much later, his armor was confirmed found. He hasn't been seen in thousands of years. What if he has been hiding in plain sight? Grievously wounded space marines are put in dreadnoughts. What if, as a twist in the future lore, Leman Russ is Murderfang?
Remember, Murderfang is a crazed dreadnought that the Wolves discovered, on the frozen planet of Omnicide (strangely, Russ's armor generated a freezing field around it). Regardless, the Wolves trust Murderfang enough to fight alongside it? Why would they trust it?
If the answer is the legendary instinct of the Space Wolves, why would they instinctually trust a dreadnought with an unknown, crazed occupant? Likley only because it was Russ himself, or they would have most likley destroyed Murderfang when he was found as they would have assumed the occupant to have fallen to Chaos. Yet he was not destroyed, so is Murderfang Leman Russ in a Dreadnought? And my opinion is that if my wild theory is true, and Russ is Murderfang, he will likley become mentally stable again at some point.
Just a crazy theory from a crazy old gamer.

We've seen the blood angels Liberian control and master the black rage which gave him a huge power boost. And corvax got a new unexpected power to turn into a shadowed talon monster, it seems logical that Russ has mastered the wulfen and can become a giant wolf monster, further more wulfen are noted for their resistance to chaos taint as well manifesting stronger in the presence of chaos, like some kind of defense mechanism how convenient considering where Russ went?

I would explain the difference between the two quotes as such:
One is accurate and the other is either wishful thinking and denial or someone trying to explain why he hasn´t returned.
The first one from the parting of ways might be Bjorn still wanting his primarch to return and as such deliberately chose to forget the part where Russ said that he was dying.
and as such when he remembers Russ´s final words the part where he says he is dying is deliberately left out of his memories.
The other option is that the qoute as put in the parting of ways is correct and Russ made no mention of him dying only that there was still beast left to slay and that he had an oath to fulfill.
However as time went on and he had yet to return, and the story of his final word was continually told from mouth to mouth, in time the part "as i am dying" was added to explain why Russ hadn´t returned.
The skjalds might have theorized that Russ knew he was dying and as such chose to go out in an honorable way fighting chaos, with his best men accompanying him to provide him a propper funeral pyre and perhaps accompany him into the next life.
The only reason why Bjorn wasn´t allowed to go with him, was to make sure the chapter didn´t splinter after his death.
As time went on and that story had been told time and again maybe even Bjorn´s memory has started to become altered.
All things considered there is truth to the statement that "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."
So the line about Russ saying he was dying, might have been a lie at the beginning but eventually, it was told enough times that people believed it to be true.
Also i take it (that since you didn´t mention it) the theory that Russ was trapped in a Hollow Star by Magnus the Red isn´t one you put much stock in despite Magnus´s little quote "and you´re.. well let us not mention where you are now."
It could certainly imply that Magnus knew where Russ where at that moment in time, so the trapped in a hollow star might not be too out the question as to where Russ is at the moment.

Two thoughts. First (and less likely), Leman Russ fell under the influence of Magnus the Red, who lured him into the Eye of Terror to torture him and his best warriors in punishment for Prospero. It's a longshot, but we know that Magnus has an axe to grind, and that the powers of Chaos have a keen interest in keeping the Loyalist Primarchs out of play. Second, Leman Russ knew that he was succumbing to the curse of the Wolfen, that he would become a nearly unstoppable monster, and resolved to go into the Eye of Terror where he could credibly rampage with little to no fear of his destruction hurting the Imperium. This seems more likely (and opens the door for an eventual twelve foot tall Leman Russ wolf-primarch in our future), but doesn't really explain why he took almost all of his personal retinue with him.

in the novel the battle of the fang Magnus comments that "Rus was still alive but probably wishes he wasn't". This indicates to me that he met an unfortunate fate but wasn't killed, either Rus succumbed to the wulfen curse but did not die & exists as a feral beast on some world of horrors in the eye or he was captured (most likely by Magnus) and is imprisoned and tormented somewhere deep in the eye. In either case the chance that Rus will return remains, in my personal view it will probably be Corax who finds Rus and returns him to the imperium as i don't think their is anyone else who would be able to.

  • @TheSalamander_
    @TheSalamander_ Před 4 lety

    I think that:
    A) The warp reacts to the belief and certainty of humans even on an individual scale, in one of the latest books a Daemon said openly that's why they hate fighting sisters of battle. Battle sisters believe daemons weak, so when fighting them they ARE weak. Now think about the self-confidence of Leman Russ compared to a battle sister. I am not sure even a greater daemon could hurt him.
    B) We know that Russ has no problem making deals with daemons, as he did upon Fenris before setting out to attack Horus at Trisolian. But what is more interesting is that the Daemon seemed bound to obey the deal too, perhaps because Russ was so certain that he would, that when Russ won the challenges he gave him the information he would need. Leaving his armour behind may have been a challenge in a new contest with a daemon or god.
    C) The spear of Russ was never a favourite possession of the Wolf King but is vital to his return. We know that the spear of Russ can make those who are corrupted see the truth, that the only reason Horus fell again to chaos was that he honestly believed his father was being an arsehole, but even then it levered open his psyche and removed some of the insanity. I reckon that Russ has gone quite mad, maybe even deceived into fighting for a chaos god, but when he returns one of his sons or brothers will stab him with the spear and he will return.
