Basic Newborn Care Tips From a Mom of 4 | How to care for your newborn baby in those first few days when you get home from the hospital.
Alright, you just had your first baby and are home from the hospital with no nurses, what do you do??? While your natural instincts are definitely going to kick in, there may be some things you don't know so I hope this video helps!

Also EVERY SINGLE MOM ON PLANET has felt at one point or another they're losing it or messing up their kid. Just know neither of those are true. Babies cry, and that's OK. It's also TOTALLY OK to put babe in safe place (crib, strapped in bouncer, bassinet) , and shower, eat, poop. Even of they wake and cry, they'll be fine a few mins.

Best advice!! The part apart putting them in a crib or bouncy seat (safely) and taking a mental health break for a few minutes is the absolute BEST advice. Avoid burnout by being over tired by taking the time you need to recharge.
To add to it, if you have a partner or a support person make them help you as much as possible! I remember going to weeks without a shower when my daughter came home and finally I snapped at my husband and how I needed help and to get clean and he was going to watch our daughter. Turns out we both were so mentally drained that we had to spell out what we needed from each other because our daughter was taking all energy. In the end he really stepped up!
Yeah babies cry. It's ok to let them cry for a minute and not rush towards them the moment they make a sound. You need to take care of yourself as well
My grandma actually encouraged allowing the children to cry for a minute to strengthen their lungs… not sure if that was true but it helped me get simple stuff done like yk.. peeing
Another good tip, every time you nurse, have a glass of water or milk to drink. That will make sure you can produce milk for the next feeding! Seriously, do it!

I've had two kiddos and I suggest going about normal things when baby sleeps. (Unless you need to nap too!) I vacuumed and cleaned when my youngest would nap in the morning. (Because I'd nap in the afternoon too lol) I made the mistake of being too quiet at first with my oldest so everything woke him up. Even the flush of a toilet. Took some time, but he adjusted lol

Here's one, feeding on demand doesn't mean feed everytime they cry. Try a cuddle, check diaper, see if they're too hot. If they go back to sleep after then they didn't need feeding.
If they are crying out of hunger they won't stop and go back to sleep.
Also, if its your first one, when they wake up, feed them, change diaper, cuddle, put back down. When they sleep do 20 min housework then YOU sleep. Baby wakes up, do the same, feed, change, cuddle and put down. Another 20 mins housework then YOU sleep. Repeat!
You need a LOT of rest and recovery and in a 20 min session of housework can get a surprising amount done. In 20mins you can load the dishwasher, clear rubbish off countertops and wipe them down and empty trash. Next 20 min session you can hoover a few rooms. Next 20mins put on a load of laundry, tidy the lounge.
That's how I got plenty rest and the house stayed looking semi decent in the first week or two.

The one thing I'm iffy about is the every two hour feeds. I left the hospital with full clearance to feed on demand because he would eat for so long and then sleep for four hours. He literally did not want to eat every two hours and I had two pedis argue with each other during my two days in until finally the other was like "oh... he didn't lose weight... and he eats for a long time.. Demand feeding IS best for you"
I nurse on demand too. 4 hours is probably the limit, but with really long feedings the timing is off. With one of mine he would wake up, I'd change him, nurse him, he'd poop while nursing (loudly), then another diaper change , and more nursing but this time his eyes would close. Every time was like that.
That’s what I’m think about…I’m just going to follow my baby’s lead. If she wants to eat every two hours and let’s us know that, ok. If it’s every four hours, ok. But waking a sleeping baby every 2 hours if they’re not hungry seems wrong to me.
Here in the U.K. regardless of feeding method (breast, bottle, formula or breastmilk) the National Health Service recommends feeding on demand to all new parents and they only alter that advice if the baby isn’t gaining weight, is jaundiced or has another health issue that requires timed feeding.

1 tip I learned that has stuck with me. If you have a boy, put a cloth or something absorbent you can wash or toss out over them when you change their diaper.
So many horror stories of changing diapers and their little baby boy pees in their face or chest or just barely misses them. I know someone who had to puke because it got in their mouth.

So funny to me because I had 3 boys, was never careful, never once got peed on. So I thought this was a myth. Had my 4th boy, he peed on me, peed on my husband, peed on every nurse at the hospital, peed on older siblings who were making googly eyes at him during diaper changes. Peed everywhere.
Reminds me of my FIL and my husband. He tells stories often about him getting pelted in the face with pee when he was a newborn, lol
Just got over this stage with my newborn. Every night when im half awake changing his diaper he managed to pee every where prompting what was a quick diaper change into bedding change, outfit change, and whole new diaper. 🫠
My brother and his wife bought 'peepee teepees' which is exactly what it sounds like. Little cloth teepees you put over them when changing so if they pee the cloth absorbs it all and you just toss it in the wash. They wouldn't put it on though sometimes and that's when they got sprayed

Once, literally on day 1 at the hospital. It was actually kind of funny lol we had two girls before so we were clueless. Then the 2nd time my sister was helping me change him. Lol
Rule nr 1: be kind and forgiving to yourself. You're not perfect so don't expect to be. It's ok to not get everything done, especially at the beginning. As long as baby is fed and changed you deserve a pat on the back. Besides, it will get better very quickly, so stay strong. And just ignore the laundry hamper and pile of dirty dishes. Your wellbeing is more important than that.

My oldest... was awful. LoL
Clogged tear duct that actually needed surgery.
Colic. Projectile vomit. Lots of burping too.
Constipation. Blow outs than ran down my leg and pooled in my shoe. Not jk.
Herniated umbilical cord.
Wouldn't take a passifier. Used my nipples instead. I was always nude from the waist up for the first 3 months.
Breastfeeding... if I hadn't been roughing them up 2 months before she was born, she might have killed me. My huge boobs seemed to only be for their esthetic beauty because they didn't seem to make enough milk. I tried beer, apple juice, water, and every other thing I was told.
Remember to clean under their necks!
Milk can get under there and get seriously nasty.

I bathed my babies every day. They loved it so much and lotion them. They woke up good and were so happy.
as long as they were happy & healthy, but for future reference babies rly aren't supposed to be bathed daily as it can dry out their delicate skin
Neem oil also helps a ton in the first few day of the tar baby poop! Rub some on after every diaper change and that sticky poo swipes right off.
I love when babies reach that age when they start looking like a freshly backed milk bread. Adorable little people

Don't let them force you to deliver in lithotomy position. Very common, very injurious, and they don't care. Do your research.
@@rayajayce2034 Yeah that's pretty common. They also don't tell you that a pictocin drip has a 65% chance of inducing postpartum depression because it works against your body's oxytocin. They reaaaaaally don't care about you or your baby's welfare. That's why hypnobirthing, waterbirthing, and midwives are the bee's knees!!

Maybe these tips can help my sister to learn how to take care of here baby soon.
My baby boy had a clogged tear duct at 12 days old and we ended up in the ER and admitted to the hospital for 3 days. It was horrible. It went from a little red to swollen and crusted shut within about 2 hours. Infection in the eye and that close to the brain is extremely dangerous. Clogged ducts are normal but please don’t ignore it thinking a few drops of breast milk will cure it.
My mom just had her last baby and had a harsh recovery so I had to help outa lot. These are all great to spill out for new moms and just parents who don’t know what the hell is going on.
My would be too tired and mentally foggy so she would forget to burp my sister. I’ll come in and burp her. Poke her around and do that leg thingy so she would fart.
Oh!! Baby massages she would sleep better afterwards.

Remember that babies can’t sleep through the night until they weigh 12lbs. Before that they don’t have enough body fat to sustain them through the night.
So don’t stress if your baby isn’t sleeping through the night early on. It’s not your failing.

Oh really ? So how did other generations do ? Babies were NEVER fed at night .Last feed was around 10 pm and the next one was at 6 am for newborns .And I belong to that generation of babies and none of us weighed 12 pounds at birth . And our parents and grand parents and their ancestors were never fed during the night . So according to what you say we should have died .....

I had to fight nurses at the hospital in order to get a bottle for my 1st baby during the night ( I couldn't breastfeed ) because she left part of each bottle during day time so she didn't get the daily amount she needed . I had to tell the doctor that my kid was deprived of food , then he ordered the night nurse to give me a bottle at night ( 2 weeks hospital stay ) .But the nurse was furious.....But when I was a baby no night feeding and I haven't been abused ...it was the norm .
@@marie34K my mom didnt get to feed me for the first 2 days of my life either, because the nurse said, that she HAD to try and breastfeed me, but I had sucked thumb in the womb, so I was unable to latch properly. My dad ended up having to sneak into the kitchen and steal a bottle for me, so I could get something to eat

Honestly these are great tips! I’m pregnant with my second and it’s been 4 years since I had my daughter and these definitely refreshed my memory! My daughter had a bad clogged tear duct! She almost needed that procedure but it cleared right when she turned a year!

Burping is like super important. The nurses took my little sister away from my mum after a feeding without burping her and she litteraly turned blue cause she was choking on her spit up, yeah, do not forget to burp.
For the first one, if you don't breastfeed then boil some water and let it cool and wipe that on the baby's eyes with a cotton pad. This also helps clear up conjunctivitis :)
I bathed my baby everyday from birth. It's a very relaxing task for her, but every baby is different.

Warm water is fine but no soap or lotions!
My baby is almost 12 months old And we finally get to go to the ear nose and throat doctor about his clogged tear dutcs.
My oldest needed surgery to fix hers.
35 years ago so I'm not sure how old she was but I don't think it was an entire year.
Hers had been draining but it stopped and got swollen very quickly.
We went right in and her surgery was the next day.

Baby came home from the NICU on a 4 hour schedule. Yes, it's a round the clock thing but feed baby when they need it,. Every 2 hours and you're never leaving the house
Same. I stayed at the hospital (with her dad, we had a little suite next to the neonatal unit at our hospital) with my daughter and she was on a 4 hour schedule.
It was very helpful. Also a lot of ppl think feeding on demand means feeding everytime they cry and make a rod for their own back. It's feed when they demand feeding. If they go back to sleep with a cuddle or nappy change it wasn't hunger making them cry.
Some babies need every two, some every four. I left the hospital with a feed on demand. He literally would not eat every two hours because he simply didn't need to. It was more like every four or five. He never lost weight and gained three pounds his first month. Do what needs to be done for YOUR baby.
My babies were tiny NICU babies, and my doctor recommended I feed them every two hours to fix it. My SO would do the 11:00 one, sometimes the 1 am ones, and I’d do 5 am, but the three am (sometimes 1am) was just awful lol
If you change diapers, put the fresh diaper under the dirty diaper before removing it. That way, if the baby starts to pee or poo out of nowhere, it goes all into the old diaper and doesn't make a big mess 😊
Also if you have a boy you have to do a quick switch .... cause they love to pee when being changed.
It helps to put the new one under the old one while still holding the old one on top baby boy. So if he pees it's not spraying everywhere
Then do a quick swap
Always hold the front down
Cause otherwise you stand the risk of a spraying

Idk if it was my breast milk or what but I didn’t have to burp my kids. As soon as I would take them out of feeding position and put them into burping position boom 💥 😂 a huge burp my daughter would exit the gas another way. Ugh I got baby fever now I’ll see y’all later.
My second son almost never burped. Couldn't make him. He never gave me trouble sleeping.
This is why everyone needs a birth and Postpartum doula support. They will help educate you on all of the things she mentioned.

When I say future I mean 5-10 years in my future. I have no desire to be a mom till I'm settled and, especially, stable. I know how hard and not fun and challenging it is to do this but it is something I want. I want to learn now so in the distant future I'll actually be ready to be a mom.

Everyone - including experienced moms and my pediatrician- said she had colic and there was nothing I could do about the constant crying except wait for her to grow out of it.

If you can't do skin to skin it's ok! You will still bond with your child. There is qlot of stress put on doing skin to skin, qnd yes it's super important during the birth so help you and baby. But it's ok if you do not continue it at home. You will not be less bonded. I had horrible pup rash during and after my pregnancy and my skin burned and bleed and hurt horribly, I could not do skin to skin. It didn't make me any less bonded with my son. I had so many people stress me how important it was and how we needed it to bond. He's five now and we are best friends. So do what works for you. Same goes for " breastfeeding around the clock".
It’s scientifically proven how beneficial skin to skin is for the baby, and for the parent. It’s unfortunate what happened to you, but it doesn’t change the facts. It is possible to mess with the infant’s development if they don’t get certain requirements. Just because you can’t do something, doesn’t mean the baby doesn’t need it.
If you can’t breast feed or skin to skin because of a medical reason, it makes sense. But for any other reason, it’s really more harmful. There are people out there who will take this as an excuse to not do what their baby needs, out of laziness and selfishness.
There’s tons of research that shows how important skin to skin and breastfeeding is. BF can help protect babies against some short- and long-term illnesses and diseases. Breastfed babies have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Breastfed babies are also less likely to have ear infections and stomach bugs.
Skin to skin can help if you’re struggling with breast feeding, it lowers blood pressure and provides stress relief. For the baby, it can give them more confidence, feel more relaxed and it can even benefit brain development.
Let me just edit for the prickly people : yes skin to skin and breast feeding are great. Yes you should do it if you can. If you can't, don't feel bad, you will still bond with your child. Sometimes there are other factors that effect things. Try your best and do what's good for you. Period.
Oh, and if you love being a mom and are doing your best, don't let anyone tell you that changing something or doing something your way will mess up your babies development or your bond. If your a smart person with common sense, who has educated themselves and talks to their doctor, and loves their child, then your are doing your best and that's what matters.
I do small massages where the tear duct is to relive a stuffy nose
Not sure how i got here but I didn't know there was a difference between a "newborn" vs 3 months. If i got basically anything 3 months ago, i would still call it new.

I feel like the nurses in the hospital covered all of this and waaaay more in the hospital 🤔 maybe that’s just a Canadian thing? But they had a binder of papers with baby care info and resources to send us home with. Plus our midwife came to our house for a 48 hour check, 1week and three week check to make sure everything is going smoothly. All for free as well..
Haha! I had literally never seen or heard of baby acne before I did the newborn care class with my midwife. And oh boy, my little guy definitely had it! And it was there for like a month and a half or something.
I'm gonna adopt one for sure in the future
I put unscented baby oil on a baby comb and I gently combed out the flaky skin from her hair when she developed cradle cap. Both of my daughters were born with full heads of hair.

Tips for dealing with boundary stomping MILs?
Blame Covid
Talk to SO and tell them what boundaries are being broken and if they listen and talk to Mil then you're good but if they don't listen and take her side that's a red flag and I'm not saying divorce or break up obvi just that you should have a more serious conversation or look into couples therapy.
Talking to your SO is def the first step! We had some issues with my MIL and after I had a conversation with my husband, he put his mother in her place. Also, don’t be afraid to stand your ground and set your boundaries. I’ve had to do this with my own mother. My son was 4 months old and she was trying to feed him things I specifically said not to. She pushed so far that I did kinda lose it on her and basically said if she can’t respect my wishes as a mother then I can’t trust her with my son. 🤷🏼♀️ Everything was better after that. My son is 2.5 yrs old now and my MIL and mother are both respectful of our boundaries and always ask if they are unsure about anything regarding him.
@@missmahem21 exactly, I've not had a kid yet but ik my mother and grandmother and I'm prepared for that talk even letting them know now because my mother likes to think she did a perfect job (I practically raised myself and my siblings 🙄)so she's already getting cocky about all the ways she gonna 'treat ' her grandkids and I'm like nope, you either do as I say or you only get supervised visitation.
glad it worked out for her i won't personally recommend not giving baby baths at least a wash of senitary areas is recommended, wet wipes are not cleaning well enough especially if its hot weather and the disposable diapers are naturally not breathable it can end up with a rash or an infection.

Baby acne doesn't always go away on its own. My son had it for two months until I gave up dairy, and soy because he was sensitive to it in my breast milk.

A baby isn’t doing physical labour. If they’re dressed appropriately they aren’t going to stink. They don’t have the same sweat glands. There’s a reason we associate BO with preteens going through puberty.

The tear duct clogged, make some chamomile tea in a bag, when is cool bit still warm put that over the eye. Done. One application was.all I needed
For a clogged tear ducked, I was told besides what you said was to take extra virgin olive oil and put a tiny drop on you finger tip and massage it into the eye lids both top and bottom. It saved my from surgery. He was 6 months old. Also olive oil will work for pink eye, sty's and colds in the eye. I swear by it.

When I used to take care of my little brother, I would do some of the feeds and I always made sure I would burp him during and after the feed. I mean I can’t imagine how uncomfortable he would get if gas starts building mid feed.
I remember when my sister's cord fell off. We didn't know where it was. some how ended up in the diaper on her butt cheek lol

I also didn’t know about burping the baby. Another thing was wiping their mouth after breastfeeding…not sure if that’s true or what but I was told to do it eventually.

I had 7 live births, and I gave them ALL a bath the minute I got home. It was a bonding time for baby, mommy and daddy. It did no harm whatsoever.
The people going, "cradle cap? WAIT!! What did she say about cradle cap!?!?
I've never even heard of the clogged tear ducts! Would those ever go away on their own, or does something need to be done about them? Also, do you mean rubbing breastmilk on their eyes...?

My baby had a massssive blowout at just 3 days😅😂
Clean behind their ears and in their neck folds (and then make sure it gets to dry too) once a day. Missed during nappy changes but gets gross if they aren't bathing yet.
And re: eye goop I had that same attitude with my babies, but somehow my 3rd baby his eyes just went crazy FAST. From a bit of goo to swollen, puffed shut and leaking spoonfuls of pus in 24 hours 😢 it was so messed up - turned out he had picked up an infection at the hospital when he went back for his heel prick at 3 days old. Even with the eye drops and compressed and massages after that he ended up with an ongoing eye infection for months, chalazions on one eye that lasted months and have left scars on his upper and lower lid and he's still super sensitive to light 2 years later.
Because we only went in for the tests we somehow slipped through a crack - the parents of babies actually admitted on the ward were contacted and given antibiotics etc and told about the infection proactively where I had to wait 30 odd hours to get into a doctor, wait for tests to be sent off and results to come back and then wait some more for the doctor to get back to me and get the medicines. He gets normal human sleepy dust in his eyes and I have PTSD-style flashbacks and feel so sick and instantly panicked.
