I see a lot of discussion and confusion about this anthem since the music is now used in Germany's national anthem. It was written in 1797 by Haydn, who also famously used it in one of his string quartets, with the words "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" -- " God save Franz the Emperor". It became Austria's unofficial anthem. In 1841 Hoffman von Fallersleben wrote the words of the "Deutschland Lied", which extolled the idea of a united Germany and used the tune. It became the unofficial anthem of German democrats during the 1848 rebellions that almost resulted then in a united Germany. It was never the anthem of a German state before 1918. After WWI the first verse, which states "Germany, Germany, above all else" became the national anthem of Germany with this tune. The original meaning of the first verse was that all Germans should place the desire for a united Germany above loyalty to any local monarch. It was misused and misinterpreted by the Nazis to mean something else of course. Germany uses another verse of the anthem today -- "Unity, Justice, and Freedom for the German People". Meanwhile, after the abolishment of the Habsburg monarchy in Austria, it wasn't until 1929 that Austria used the tune with different words as their national anthem. That lasted until the Anschluss. Ironically, the national anthem of the German Empire under the kaisers was set to the same tune as "God save the King"!
befor 1871, when Bismark create the german-prussian Impire, the germans have seen in the austrian Imperor also the german Imperor. 1787, when the hm was written, the austrian rulers are also the german Imperors until to the Jear 1806. So this Anthem is also austrian like german!

I like how nobody ever cheers or smile or waive an hand back to those foreign rulers, for all their beatyful clothes, the fanfare of imperial anthem and the smiles of the royals, they only get the cold reception by the Venetians subjects: men's hats are off, but slowly, some clearly hesitating whether to pay respect or not, some on the balcony definetly do not. I remember how in the next scene the royals realize that and their smile become more and more fake, Sissi stops smiling, while the gondola carries them around and the Venetians keep staring at them, curious but ho, so cold, one of them ostentatiously turning his back to them.

Since all Europe's royalty in those times was (were?) closely related to each other... nothing ironic about it ;)
Just a happy family-tune.
befor 1871, when Bismark create the german-prussian Impire, the germans have seen in the austrian Imperor also the german Imperor. 1787, when the hm was written, the austrian rulers are also the german Imperors until to the Jear 1806. So this Anthem is also austrian like german!
Gott erhalte, Gott beschuetze unser Kaiser, unser Land.
Many greetings, dear Ritter von Kvancnik. Some day, God willing, there will be a new and better empire in central Europe, which I would call Centralia, comprising Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Slovensko, Slovenia, and Croatia =--at least.
My respects and gratitude for sharing this video. Best wishes to you as well.
Amen
You can't have the name Centralia, because that means Central Australia.

Österreich hat Ungarn nicht annektiert sondern geerbt
@Hungarian Noble Especially the joy of restoring House of Habsburg and appointing Admiral Horthy to destroy the French Navy.
What you doing?
Watching football.
Who's playing?
Austria-Hungary.
Against whom?
From Poland with love:
Boże wspieraj, Boże ochroń
Nam Cesarza i nasz kraj,
Tarczą wiary rządy osłoń,
Państwu Jego siłę daj.
Brońmy wiernie Jego tronu,
Zwróćmy wszelki wroga cios,
Bo z Habsburgów tronem złączon
Jest na wieki Austrii los.
This Anthem could be sung in any of the 17 (!!) recognized languages of the Monarchy INCLUDING YIDDISH (although only three languages "official govnmt": German, Hungarian, Polish). Shame that the Germans stole this melody after 1918 and it is now associated with the Nazis of WW2
it is still the anthem.
but with a different text
it always was a different text
Piękna adaptacja, niezależnie od całego kontekstu historycznego. Man lernt nie aus.
Respect to The Great Austria from a son of The Spanish Empire!!! 🇦🇹🇪🇸🇦🇹🇪🇸
as a Croat i think in times of Austrian empire it was better than today beacuse of many reason.

I miss that Europe we ever had...
I know that Austrian Empire was a prison of slavic-nations, and being Russian, we were enemies, but It's still disgusting to think that so many great empires are dead, with its brave and proud people, and the beautiful Europe now turning to dirty and awful Europestan:(
I hope you, real Europeans, will not ever let it go on, and one day you make Europe great and proud again. With all my heart, I wish you good luck in it!
You are not our enemy! We have to forget our dark times of war and rebuild the empire! Greatings from Austria :)
As far as I know it was not a prison. All the languages of the empire were official. The military conducted itself in the language of each zone, etc.
Yes, the Europe where Pope absolutely manipulated European people's life, chose your government and told you what you had to do and what you had to think.
@@jesuissoldatamericain8771 Those times are over. Even everyone should help each other, there is need to preserve our culture. The Austrian Archduchess Maria Leopoldina was the first empress of Brazil. She signed the decree of the independence of the Great Brazilian Empire. She was the first to rule our country, and was the mom of our most important leader D. Pedro II, Also, the yellow colour on our flag represents the House of Habsburg. The flag had red and white to represent Austria. Thank you Austria.
God save the Monarchy.
Damn, so stunning, I wanna cry
All that beauty was made up by Venetians during the 700 years of glorious independent republic.

The movie SISI what splendor, only catch it on TCM once a year maybe.
Sad not on DVD.
The KasierHymne the best in my book.
The REAL Austria
Absolutely love this!
If France was known as the daughter of the Catholic Church (sadly not anymore after the barbaric French revolution), then Austria-Hungary should be its son.
fRANCE WAS PERFECTLY RIGHT.

As a Filipino, you may notice my country is named "Philippines" during the time when we were integrated into the Spanish Empire, as the Spanish East Indies. I would want to say, the name was in honor of his Magesty King Philip II Habsburg of Spain. VIVA ESPAÑA! VIVA HABSBURGO! 🇵🇭🇪🇸❤🇦🇹

Wait a sec.... the Austrians ruled Venice at one point?
Yes. 1815 (Vienna Congress) till 1866 (Austro-Prussian War).
Yes but no one venetian want this
So did the HREGN for hundreds of years. Different times ;)
@@ginoilpanettieretginop5056 are you sure ?
@@MatteoTN Very likely. Venice had been an indipendent republic for more than a millenia until it was assigned to the austrians in 1815. There were numerous uprisings, like the decleration of the San Marco Republic in 1848, quickly dispanded by the austrian army. 1866, Venice (and the Veneto region) was annexed by the recently unified Italy in the aftermath of the Austro-Prussian war. Not every venetian was happy under italian rule, but surely almost nobody, exept those who profited from it, was happy under austrian rule. It's nonsense to say otherwise.

Yes you are right it is the greatest anthem in the world. It is very emotional and stirring
Compared to what happened afterwards in most of the successor states, Fascism and then Communism, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was pretty decent.

Love this movie series. Interesting though how the anthem of the Austrian Empire became the one of modern Germany.
I love Austria long live for this beautiful country
as a child i recall this tune to a hymn which started with the words, "glorious things of thee are spoken Zion city of our God" I didnt know then it was the Aistrian anthem
Good old monarchy~
Austria e Italia unire come Italia-Austria!
MAI.
