Die Habsburger Monarchie war übrigens im Unterschied zum Königreich Preußen ein multiethnischer Staat (sieht man von der großen polnischen Minderheit in den preußischen Provinzen Posen und Westpreußen ab); und die Donaumonarchie besaß unterschiedlichste Rechtsordnungssysteme, mehrere Amtssprachen, die alle nebeneinander existierten. Dieser Kaiserhymne gab es nicht nur auf Deutsch, sondern auch auf Ungarisch, auf Tschechisch, auf Kroatisch, auf Polnisch, auf Ruthenisch, auf Rumänisch und selbst auf Italienisch. Und nicht zuletzt: Österreich und Ungarn waren nach Innen zentralstaatlich organisierte Gebilde (trotz des Fortbestands der Königreiche Böhmen oder Kroatien und Slawonien und ihrer besonderen Rechte innerhalb der zis- oder transleithanischen Reichshälfte) mit einer gemeinsamen gesamtstaatlichen Außen- und Kriegspolitik. Der 1871 gegründete Staatenbund Deutsches Reich hatte keine eigene Armee, und bis 1900 hatte er nicht einmal ein gemeinsames Zivilrecht, eine echte Regierung hatte er auch nicht, weil es mit Ausnahme des Kanzlers keine Minister des „Reiches“ gab.
Wenn in der heutigen Republik Österreich also die Kaiserhymne zu Ehren von Franz Joseph I. oder seinem Großneffen erklingt, dann wird damit mitnichten irgendeine deutsch-nationale Vergangenheit beschworen, sondern ein multiethnisches, multireligiöses (man denke an das muslimische Bosnien-Hercegovina, seit 1908 annektiert, aber auch an das orthodoxe Ruthenien oder das protestantische bzw. atheistische Böhmen), multikulturelles Imperium, das mit den Ideen eines auf Deutschland fixierten Patriotismus oder Nationalismus so viel zu tun hatte, wie eine Kuh mit dem Eierlegen.

I know this tune from always and I don't recall ever ever learning it. My parents are political refugees from Hungary of 1956. I don't know partially what my ancestor's background was... Really a shame... However my paternal grandma was from Ulm. I imagine how it happened that I've been taught (accidentally rather) this tune.. Anyway, I looked up the lyrics and sing it out loud walking through the Forrest here, keeping alive something from the past of my ancestors.. It makes me dream and wonder 😋💖✌️

You'll probably know this tune because it's the German anthem, the Deutschlandlied. Composed by Haydn for the emperor some time ago it somehow became the melody of the Deutschlandlied. The anthem of the GDR, Auferstanden aus Ruinen, was also composed by an Austrian - Hannes Eisler.

The Hapsburgs were no prize, especially not the old Emperor, Franz Joseph. In 1900, he forced his nephew, Franz Ferdinand, to marry Sophie morganatically and treated her like garbage. In 1903, he interfered in the papal election. In 1914, he was privately happy when Franz Ferdinand was killed, since he no longer had to worry about Sophie becoming Empress, but helped plunge Europe into war anyway. He was succeeded by Karl (Charles), who endorsed Pope Benedict XV’s “peace plan” for the war. Everyone would withdraw to his pre-1914 borders. After three years of war and millions dead? Not likely. Erste deutsche Kaiserhymne. Österreich stellte damals den deutschen Kaiser. Die Hymne ist bezüglich des Textes länger und nimmt Bezug zu Deutschland. Das wurde bewusst weg gelassen. Das ist unhistorisch. Otto von Habsburg hat sich übrigens als Deutschösterreichisch verstanden.

That's right : King of Sweden Carl Gustav attending with the Queen Sylvia who, incidentally, is german and before marrying the King was hostess in the olympic village at Munich games 1972 .
Wenn man betrachtet wie viel er für Österreich getan hat ist das schon angemessen...
