King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain arrived in Manila Sunday for a four-day visit to reaffirm their country's close ties with the Philippines.
It is the first visit by a reigning Spanish monarch to Spain's only former Asian colony.
More than four centuries after the navigator Ferdinand Magellan claimed the islands for Spain, the European country's influence in the Philippines remains strong.
Surnames are Hispanic, 85 per cent of people are Roman Catholic and the native language contains numerous Spanish words. The islands themselves were named after King Philip the Second.
To underline the ties, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arrived for a four-day visit.
They received a 21-gun salute at the presidential palace, which once served as the official residence of Spanish governors-general.
They had lunch with President Fidel Ramos and the first lady Amelita. Later King Carlos was expected to receive the Golden Cross Award from the Pontifical and Royal University built by the Spaniards.
The King is accompanied by a 44-member business delegation to discuss trade and investment with their Filipino counterparts.

I was so glad that our countries finally had an agreement so we wont have any wars anymore!!
Sadly, twas' infidels from both sides that caused separation.
@@arsantiqua8741 hell are you on about?
Umm, we only had one war with Spain, which is called the Philippine Revolution in the Philippines and the Tagalog War in Spain. In my opinion, if Spain gave in to the proposed reforms of the Ilustrados with actually allowing the Philippines to become a Spanish province (or even giving the Philippines autonomy as a Dominion with the Spanish crown as the symbolic head of State- like Canada or some other British Dominion) there would have never been a rebellion against the Spanish authorities from the Filipinos. IMO many Filipinos dont know what a Constitutional Monarchy is...
We used to rule you
@@carloshevia7665 They. It doesn't include me or you.
Quite cool that the Philippines never wear Casual necktie suit
@船尾中文 yeah
@@tanmngl7632 no, it did not. Barong tagalog is native to the Philippines
@@tanmngl7632ok kalang!
@@tanmngl7632 tf men
well the Barong Tagalog is an old Spanish-Filipino formal clothing for national ceremonies and international relations that is being used to this day for public officials.
Hope someday King Felipe VI and his family may visit the Philippines
Yeah if he does decide to visit I'll make sure I'm there.
It's not every lifetime you get to see God's anointed king.
@@juanantoniogragasin1685 Actually, the Kings of Spain are not annointed because of change in tradition. The only God annointed monarch in Europe is Queen Elizabeth II of UK. She had a coronation whereas the other sovereigns in Europe have inauguration.
@@nicosalazar5154 Oh really didn't know that, thanks for info!
@@juanantoniogragasin1685 No problem. Its actually quite sad because tradition is evolving. Another coronation will be held once Queen Elizabeth II is dead.
Yes!!!! I hope too
Viva Filipinas y Viva Espana!
s2pid if they create a monarch in the country probably still up to know power of spain and philippine together are great
¡viva Filipinas !, viva España !

@@fatimatunga3917 hahahaha,
The music is great because it may mean:
The national anthem made by Spain, USA and Philippines.
Just like the relationship between US and UK.. I hope we get close with Spain
Long live the King!!
From Philippines
we dont need their apology. we want them back!
Whos with me?
Apparently you don't have an ounce of self respect. You named yourself after a Nazi and having wet dreams of foreigners ruling over you.
@@juliosunga3530 I just want the things that I think are better for the Philippines even if I have to make sacrifices, wouldn't you want to be stuck in a corrupted third world mess? We are lagging behind our neighbors and we could have been a naval power in the south east asia rivaling japan during WW2. We could have been a first world country, but no. Our ancestors should have known better.
You have been fed with false lies and propaganda by the school system, you shouldn't be hating the spanish, you should be thanking them.
@@juliosunga3530 calm your tits. It's just a 4chan-noid
No, we do not
@@neymarjr_. do you think Spain right now is a bastion of proper governance? Of all the major European countries, Spain is one of the most mediocre.
0:05 Ah yes, the song of Spanish defeat
LOL.
More like our defeat. We never defeat the Spanish in any battle in the so called "revolutionary war". Only when the Americans came that we begin to gain ground. And of course we got colonized by the Americans instead in the years to follow. Lmao 😂
The biggest mistake we ever did was breaking off with Spain. Philippines is a messy third world disaster today while Spain is rich af. I'll go for the latter.
@@jaypeedesuyo662philippines will be a new caledonia to spain
Spain loves Philippines most as the other Spain colonized like Mexico and South America.
Viva Philippines y spain
panahon pa ni Fidel Ramos yan ehh
Hopefully makabisita din ang kasulukuyang hari at reyna ng Spain na sina King Felipe VI at Queen Letizia.. Or kahit ang Future Queen ng Spain na si Princess Leonor.

@@k-studio8112 The bourbon kings of spain today were never related to philip ii. Philip ii was a habsburg and an austrian, the current house of spain are bourbons and are french. The last descendant of Philip II died without an heir.
@@user-ip5yc7bg2k I'm not talking about their bloodline. I'm referring to their monarchy as a whole.
@@user-ip5yc7bg2k actually Charles ii of Spain was the last Habsburg king, he is great grandson of Phillip ii...Since he didn't have heir, the throne of Spain passed through his sister's grand son, who married King of Bourbon, Philip V of Spain became king of the country under Bourbon house..
Are there any queens and kings in the philippines in any centuries?
Nightmare Gem There was, during the spanish colonization, the spanish allowed them to retain their titles. But, when Spain and America went to war, Spain lost the Philippines to the US, and the US stripped the power from the remaining Kings and Queens (Datus, Raja, Lakan/Don and Doña during spanish times) and installed a democratic government.
Nightmare Gem before the bruneian colonization we have a dynasty called "Tondo Dynasty" named by the chinese empire as laosung or something. In adition we have city states in bataan, west Philippines, palawan and mindanao. We call them datu. A king claims that his family owns the Philippines including taiwan, palau, hawaii and other pacific islands in solomon etc.
400 years of spanish kings
Yes, and his name is asiong salongga king of the tondo manila😂
The monarchs of Spain were our Kings and Queens for the past 333 years. From King Philip II of the Hapsburgs and all the way up to King Alfonso XIII of the Burbons.
Pres. Fidel Ramos at that time walang paki alam na ang dumi ng paligid, hindi man sinabihang lilinisin ang paligid dahil may visita tayo ng King and Queen of Spain.
Kaya nga wala syang kusa naturingan presidente ng Philippine
¡Viva el rey!
Restore the Spanish Monarchy in the Philippines! Long live King Felipe VI!
God no thanks
Ulol
kadiri ka
@Yeru Shalayim Tama!!
Oh please no, the Bourbons are done. They don't have the same credibility as Louis XIV or even their other European counterparts anymore. I would love to see a Filipino Monarch that works like Queen Elizabeth, someone with big balls that will not buy politicians sucking them up to get want they want, someone who will voice out what the public actually wants, talk down on politicians and stand their ground without fear of losing their job or being pressured by their political party.
Orchestra marching for Royal visitor.
Make Español an official language in the Philippines once again.
@Yeru Shalayim walang pilipinas kung wala ang visayas at mindanao. Let's not use 'replace' and just rephrase it to 'one of the national language' instead
@Big Mouth edi wala tayong personality nyan ginawa ang tagalog ni manuel el queson para magkaintindihan lahat hindi yung espanyol na tayo
Our language are tagalog so don't change it just bc our language as some Spanish doesn't mean to change it back bc so meny people war as but our language are still tagalog 😡

Juan Carlos had a lot of scandals and now its King Felipe who is rulling
Did philippines had any monarchies before?
yes before ther was a kingdom of tondo in the philippines but the colonizer arrived its gone but now a days thee are left sultanate of sulu and sultanate of magiundanao but not ruled the whole country
yee spain counts because they thought of their colonies as "provinces" i.e part of their country. so the monarch of spain was the monarch of the philippines. Pre-colonial monarchies are kind of different in that they didn't hold absolute power like in western ones, so its kinda iffy to count them as monarchies.
Yes, like Butuan, Tondo, Sulu, etc.
