King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain arrived in Manila Sunday for a four-day visit to reaffirm their country's close ties with the Philippines.
It is the first visit by a reigning Spanish monarch to Spain's only former Asian colony.
More than four centuries after the navigator Ferdinand Magellan claimed the islands for Spain, the European country's influence in the Philippines remains strong.
Surnames are Hispanic, 85 per cent of people are Roman Catholic and the native language contains numerous Spanish words. The islands themselves were named after King Philip the Second.
To underline the ties, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arrived for a four-day visit.
They received a 21-gun salute at the presidential palace, which once served as the official residence of Spanish governors-general.
They had lunch with President Fidel Ramos and the first lady Amelita. Later King Carlos was expected to receive the Golden Cross Award from the Pontifical and Royal University built by the Spaniards.
The King is accompanied by a 44-member business delegation to discuss trade and investment with their Filipino counterparts.

Umm, we only had one war with Spain, which is called the Philippine Revolution in the Philippines and the Tagalog War in Spain. In my opinion, if Spain gave in to the proposed reforms of the Ilustrados with actually allowing the Philippines to become a Spanish province (or even giving the Philippines autonomy as a Dominion with the Spanish crown as the symbolic head of State- like Canada or some other British Dominion) there would have never been a rebellion against the Spanish authorities from the Filipinos. IMO many Filipinos dont know what a Constitutional Monarchy is...

yee spain counts because they thought of their colonies as "provinces" i.e part of their country. so the monarch of spain was the monarch of the philippines. Pre-colonial monarchies are kind of different in that they didn't hold absolute power like in western ones, so its kinda iffy to count them as monarchies.
