    A leftist coalition pulled off a surprise victory in the second round of parliamentary elections in France on Sunday, becoming the largest bloc in Parliament and successfully keeping the far-right National Rally party of Marine Le Pen out of government. The New Popular Front, which won 182 seats in the National Assembly, still fell short of the 289 seats required for an absolute majority. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition came second with 163 seats, while the National Rally and its allies won 143 seats after having led the first round of voting a week earlier. We go to Paris to speak with author and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi and journalist Rokhaya Diallo about the historic election result.

      She is correct, you are the one not knowing what you are talking about. Here is the story (short version): when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992 the lies of the Left were exposed to the world, the workers NEVER wanted to be suppressed by the totalitarian dictatorship (I live here, I know). For a year or so the Left was silent. Then it invented the Palestinians as a new group of "suppressed people" and "a suppressed people is always right" (remember that phrase?). From there it expanded: not only were Palestinians correct, the Left now supports migration of islam supporters, sharia law, suppression of women, marrying of 11 year old girls to middle age men and Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi terrorism (including terror by the Rohingyas, remember?). The Left loves totalitarian states, be it a military Socialist dictatorship like Burma, ISIS, Boku Haram, Taliban in Afghanistan. And Mélenchon is no different. He would love to destroy French society and culture, he wants to be the new Hitler (he was also a Socialist), Stalin, Pol Pot or Ho Chi Minh. He already demanded to be appointed the new "Führer" of France. This is what Socialists always have stood for, and NOTHING is different in 2024.

      @@thewirah1 The FACT is that anti-antisemitism is the new opium of the bourgeoisie "bien pensante". Many people, oftentimes media immigrants aspiring to greater gentility, insinuate that JLM is "anti-semitic" . Based on what? "His relationship with Hamas is quiet; we don't know what it is" dixit Madame Satrapi. On the other hand, I agree with Rokhya Diallo that Melenchon's party La France Insoumise "has been demonized because of their pro-Palestinian stance and they are the only party to address islamophobia". Anti-semitism has to be condemned, but this new instrumentising of anti-semitism is dangerous. It has so far allowed even Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella to come off as anti-racists in the eyes of unsuspecting voters simply because they brand their vicious islamophobia as sanctimonious anti-antisemitism.

A very complex situation...

    • @elisabethrichard
      @elisabethrichard Před 13 dny

      Jean-Luc Mélenchon has been demonized by his opponents and by the entire media, including left-wing media by the way, for years now. It only got worse after October 7, now we've clearly entered defamation territory. To be sure, he's not exactly a cuddly bear. I wish he were a grumpy but lovely Grandpa like Bernie Sanders but he just isn't. He can be quite agressive and even dismissive in the way he expresses himself and that rubs a LOT of people the wrong way. But it also pleases a lot of people who are happy to see someone stand up and defend them.
      And yes, his political movement is not democratic, and many people on the left take grave offense to that, and automatically assume he's a dictator wannabe. I wish his party was democratic, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. It's not easy to build a cohesive left wing movement when the entire economic system, political system and media environment is against what the left stands for. The Greens have been trying to do that with a flawlessly democratic party and I'm sad to report that they've been utterly failing. Mélenchon has been pretty strategic so far, his vision has been on point, and he's allowed the next generation of leftists to blossom. We owe him a great debt.
      If he's ever proven to be actually antisemitic or if his party still isn't democratic after they've actually succeeded, you'll see me criticize him, but not until then. Don't buy the media propaganda, they don't have our best interest at heart.

But I am old enough to remember what happened last time, that a "peoples front" was created: it was after WWII in East Europe, where all the democracies were overthrown and replaced by Socialist dictatorships. Millions were sent to working camps, no freedom of speech, suppression of the people. In 1989-1992 the people of East Europe finally said no, and that arrangement was terminated. The fact that Macron did not understand who and what he made a deal with, is incredible. Anyone over 30 should remember this.

      No, that is wrong. France split the Middle East in to the lands and countries it is today, this is France's fault for these issues, go and review Sykes-Picot Agreement. France should not be the one to force Israel to do that, it is immoral.

    All money from sales of resources from Russia should be given to Russian citizens, but our officials take everything for themselves! We pay high taxes and our government also sells weapons, but life is not enough for them; we ordinary Russians have not been given and are not being given! I believe that the resources in Russia need to be returned to Russian citizens! All money from resources must be distributed to Russian citizens!

      @@alanwatterson2850 From a British leftist's perspective, the current Labour government does not represent the broader Leftist movement in the West today. There are a few key reasons.
      1. The Labour Party wants to continue the political economy of austerity, and the new Chancellor of the Exchequer very much represents economic orthodoxy as a former employee of the 'independent' Bank of England.
      2. The Labour Party is Zionist and has encouraged Israel's crimes against humanity while in opposition, including the denial of water and power to Gaza by Israel. They also will not recognise a Palestinian state and are likely to continue to sell arms and security technology to Israel.
      3. Labour has continued the demonisation of migrants in British political culture, most recently with a targeted attack on Bangladeshi migrants, as well as in welcoming former Tory MP's into the Labour Party that have voted for a harsher migration regime and who have used racist depictions of migrants.
      I believe Labour will be more progressive on the economy and foreign policy than the previous Conservative government, but they have given every indication that they will be much more aligned with the centre on these issues. Labour in its current form is much more aligned with the centre-left of Macron and Trudeau than the NFP and is in many ways more right-leaning than either Trudeau or Macron even.
