Shifting powers - NATO and the Global South | DW Documentary

  • NATO calls itself the strongest and most successful defense alliance in the world. But this view is not universal. Countries in Africa and Asia regard the organization with skepticism and distrust, accusing it of double standards and hypocrisy.
Russia’s war on Ukraine has further divided the world and revealed a deep disconnect between NATO countries and the so-called Global South. The West considers Russia’s aggression as a blatant violation of international law. Emerging powers like India or South Africa, however, refuse to cut ties with the Kremlin.
The documentary analyses how the disconnect came about and what the prevailing perspectives are in Africa and Asia. Can the West write the concerns off as pure Russian disinformation? Or is the mistrust of NATO - a defense alliance formed 75 years ago - deeply rooted in its own history and actions? We speak to decision makers and advisors in South Africa and India, but also in the US and Europe, about the different views of Russia's war in Ukraine and NATO's support for Kyiv.
The film seeks answers on whether there can be a path to reconciliation between NATO and the NATO-skeptical countries in the Global South. And what role - if any - the NATO alliance can play in an emerging multipolar world.

    • @Mr.Septon
      @Mr.Septon Před 13 dny +22

Except that regional security doesn't exist in a vacuum. We live in an increasingly interconnected global system. If a cargo ship gets stuck turned sideways in the Suez Canal, it affects the prices and timelines of goods and resources the world over as it ripples outward the longer that it continues.
Houthi rebels attacking cargo ships trying to pass by Yemen rapidly threatened world security, but largely through indirect means. A large reason that the US having such a mighty navy is so critical to their domestic and foreign policy is in part because their maintaining the oceans for global trade, even such as Middle Eastern oil and natural gas which by and large the US doesn't directly care about. If, however, Japan cannot receive their energy shipments then they will become more desperate and willing to spend more to obtain it elsewhere, which ripples out and causes global prices to increase, so even at home, especially then as the goods and services then start to increase in cost, and that spreads.
If a war were by chance to occur between China and Taiwan, not saying it will but if, one of the first major impacts would be to the global trade market and critical shipping routes would be cut off. This would immediately impact energy shipping to Japan, South Korea, and many other nations in the region. All of the high-end technology that is produced from those countries would also have a difficult time trying to ship the other way.
We saw at multiple times, from the US-China trade war that started under Trump, which caused a massive delay in shipping around the world as shipping containers started to be unavailable to make critical journeys. Then we had a global pandemic and the world shut down, making things worse. Then we had a global recession to worsen things.
These are all small in scale compared to if China and Taiwan were to go to war. The amount of global trade that China is responsible for, and provides through naval shipping routes, would be heavily impacted and endangered. You would likely see the "West" sanctioning China and with the addition of the US at bare minimum in such a war, would impact people the world over.
If we want peace at home in 2024, we have to be willing to seek peace globally. NATO has roughly reached the limits of this alliance's ability to adapt to the modern world and a natural evolution is coming, one that will be far more global which would likely start with our strongest and most important allies in the Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Our nations are already greatly aligned in international affairs and if anything we need to take things to the significant next degree with greater global economic and military cooperation and merging into something more. The problems of the 21st century are not purely regional, and neither are the solutions.

After WW2 most of Western allies already disengaged but the Red Army continues to push even further to the West making them possess the largest empire in 20th century. Also Turkey is part of NATO hence there’s obligation to protect them with missiles otherwise who knows, perhaps Stalin would make his version of Soviet Afro Eurasia. As for Cuba for the entire Cold War period Cuba has never been inducted to the Warsaw Pact it’s pretty much just a ploy by the Soviets to threaten the West. 8:30 Again, hypocrissy: "The way the west sees it, every country should have the right to choose its own allies and not to bow to great powers seeking to maintain spheres of interest."
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but NATO is pretty upset with Iran, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, N. Korea and India choosing their allies. Maybe I'm wrong but didn't Stoltenberg say just today and NATO claimed in their summit statement that China can't be friends with Russia, in other words. That is to say NATO, a great power, told China to bow down and only make friends with who NATO says it can? And from what I've seen in the headlines, the US amabassador to India had some choice words for his counterparts because of India visiting Moscow this week.
This video is just full of endless contradictions and hypocrisy. There's not enough strenght in my keyboard warrior fingers to respond to each and every one of the contradictions.

In this globalized world, it's fairly easy to export knowledge and ideas to the ones in the Global South who want to adopt some successful ways of the well-off West. (as long as they aren't hemmed in by authoritarian states' firewalls)
It's much better to let the Global South decide what to do after *localizing* the possible ideas. *EVERY* place, every country, and every region differ so customization is highly preferable.
For the ones in the Global South who don't want to change, the West should just leave them alone.
NATO isn't suitable for everyone. It was pretty much a model of the several states of the U.S.A. arising out of our experience fighting against the British Empire to gain our independence to become a global power.
This model has worked very well in the countries where the U.S.A. provided security. NATO is for "small" countries which need security guarantees. It's not for any country aspiring to become the first among equals.
The U.S.A. model has been partially replicated in Europe to great success via NATO and the EU. 🎉
