    Ant makes dumb decisions but I do really like him. Twice now he's shown he's fully willing to help others before himself when things get serious- EP 1 when everyone is running from the graveyard he helps others over the fence and ends up getting caught himself, and here he is the first/only one that manages to make it through to get to malakai and get him up and out of there

      @@theresebell1198I still feel like there’s an element of awareness you would have. She gets with amerie’s long term crush and then after bringing malakai into a safe space after something horrendous and pretty traumatic happened to him, they initiate a threesome with him? Absolutely screwed up. Even if they were high as well they still took advantage of him. He wasn’t in the right headspace before they got high. And even so harper knew that Amerie and Malakai were involved to some degree.
      SPOILERS FOR FUTURE EPISODES:
      And then after that harper makes a huge speech stepping on dusty’s ego (which he deserved) and then suddenly she’s being celebrated? That’s what I hate the most. She does horrible things but people forget about it after a ballsy speech and suddenly she’s so cool. Both dusty and she took advantage of malakai and that’s totally brushed over. I really hope they dig more into malakai’s storyline in s2

      @@dannielliebear5269 yeah i hated that SHE also almost got taken advantage of and has that trauma at the front of all her actions yet she grabbed a barely responsive Malakai who could barely breath and just went through a panic attack and yet she initially something sexual with him. I hate what Malakai went through... *all* of it. :( 20:50 No, it's not the right time and after what he's been through, he isn't really able to give consent. Not a healthy interaction at all.
    Plus I want Malakai and Amerie to be together. And Darren and Cash.

  • @valentinafangirling
    @valentinafangirling Před 9 měsíci +198

    2 things i wanna point out though: 1) spider sucks but you can see the moment malakai got hate crimed (was very much bc of racism) spider along with EVERYONE else did not hesitate for a SECOND to jump in. Its like they do have a certain degree of being there for each other (the main cast that is) which is so nice??? And i hope it gets explored more. Spider was a dick but not like an abuser or anything, so i hope all the relationships including non-romantic ones get explored more in s2. The moment shows they shine as a cast, even down the the little comedic “shut up spider” moment afterwards. 2) Harper was regardless of her past trauma so shitty in this ep. Not to Am, but to Malakai. He was barely responsive, drinking, and in a clear horrible mental state and very much not sober. Still, for some fucking reason, she and Dusty decided to engage with him sexually. It feels like his consent was not all the way there and that is something I hope gets brought up in s2 because I couldn’t look at Harper the same afterwards. And Dusty, altho i never cared much for Dusty lmao.

    • @RubyDrye
      @RubyDrye Před 9 měsíci +5

      Telling a victim that they should/shouldn't have done something IS abuse. Because you are shifting part or all of the blame onto the victim. "You shouldn't have talked back", "you shouldn't have drank too much", "you shouldn't have worn that short skirt." It does not matter that Spider jumped up with the rest. Even if he punched the police or helped Malakai get away - Spider still said what he said.

    • @valentinafangirling
      @valentinafangirling Před 9 měsíci +6

      @@RubyDrye fair point. My post was not to defend him bc he’s still a shit. I just think his character is, like Dusty, very flat compared to the others. But unlike Dusty, he has the potential to be more complex because a lot of his actions contradict themselves and it is not explored on the show. And it would be a waste to not explore his character more because he has really good chemistry (like cast chemistry) with the others, all the characters do. Cast chemistry is not easy to accomplish tbh. Lots of really good shows with really good characters don’t accomplish that (look at euphoria). So my point was, the show SHOULD explore the cast chemistry and all the little relationships outside of the romantic ones more because the cast shines with it, and Spider is a character that has the potential to be super interesting if explored more too. I’m talking from a point of view as potential overall not the plot of the show itself. Would be such a waste of talent, potential, and chemistry if they just leave spider (dusty and the other guy too) as just annoying obstacles rather than going deeper into them.

    • @rubymilne6651

      @@valentinafangirlingI’m watching the reactions after finishing s2 and **(spoiler if you haven’t seen s2 yet)** they do go deeper into spider and why he is the way he is.. it’s so interesting! And the cast chemistry is so apparent in the show like you said, it’s probably why it’s so hard to genuinely hate any of the characters lol…

    • @valentinafangirling
      @valentinafangirling Před 3 měsíci +3

      @@rubymilne6651 sure did!!! I’m biased bc i think as i said in another response here, that Spider and Dusty were the more flat characters compared to others yet I felt like Spider shined in comparison bc his acting was really good. I do think they made Spider more of a bigot at the beginning of s2. He was a shit but not that bad in s1, they went full incel with him in s2 though. I understood why and genuinely do like his character bc i see the potential (and again i feel like im a little biased bc I genuinely think his acting shines more than others sometimes so i just like to see him on my screen). (His chemistry with Missy was also 10/10 they are def my top 3 ships on the show). However i do not think he got a redemption arc yet. We understood him better and saw him say he wants to try to be better and be there for Missy. I think some people are saying his redemption was fast but, i dont think we have truly seen it yet. So I’m excited for s3 with that. I think is funny my og comment talked about how his words often don’t match his actions and Missy said that “half the shit he says he doesn’t believe”. Which seeing others reactions online made me realize other ppl hadn’t caught up to that. How he often says shit but is the first to actually physically try to help his peers when shit hits the fan (like when Quinnie had the accident in the woods and you see in subtitles he’s not only freaking but telling others how to be careful with her leg and shit and jumped to help). I hope they keep exploring his character, and like i said in my comment, hope they also dive more into all the friendships outside the romance. S2 proved to me again the cast just genuinely has such good group chemistry which is not always common and easy to find.

I think with spider, it’s like opening a door but only partially.. it’s not wide open yet - but we’re getting there. we’ve seen why he is the way he is and that he wants to change, but change doesn’t happen overnight. It’ll be interesting to see how he acts in s3 and if him and Missy breakup, will he go back to his bigot self?? Ahh I want s3 now lol.

    "Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras" (full title) began in 1978 in Sydney, with a street march celebrating gay rights when homosexuality was still illegal (wasn't legalised in Aus human rights until 1994). The events that came out of the first Mardi Gras had a huge impact, and the event is now a massive incredible pride festival. 🌈🎉 Racism and homophobia are still pretty bad in Aus, especially in particular places, basically anywhere outside the cities (I'm from Queensland, a particularly backwards state). I loved what you said about young people not being "the problem", and you're so right, it's the systems of oppression and the absolutely perverse and antiquated social, cultural, and ideological thinking and behaviour. I shouldn't be surprised, but I always am, when people drop racist and homophobic language flippantly in conversation with no thought about it, and sadly this isn't just from adults, but from the mouths of young kids whose parents were born in the 80s and 90s and are ignorant and are still perpetuating the same behaviours and language. Sad. This show - and others like Heartstopper - is so important for representation and changing the narrative. Wonderful reaction as always :) Love your work and can't wait to see the next one!

  • @AntonioTC416
    @AntonioTC416 Před 9 měsíci +18

    I've asked myself way too many times, did I just experience homophobia or racism? I've come to conclude, it's both. It doesn't matter which one might be more prevalent. I've watched my white gay friends be served at a bar (queer bar), despite me being there before, trying to get the bartender's attention. As queer people we are treated differently, even in our own spaces. At the beginning of that scene (Harper, Dusty and Malakai), I wasn't sure what to think, I was confused. As it started to sink-in, I kept saying, "no, no, guys, this is not the right time." In this time of traumatic vulnerability, Malakai was taken advantage of.

    Yasssss finally aboard the Cash/Darren train!! They're such absolutely good eggs 🥺🥺🥺 I really love how organically and non-problematic their relationship is compared to the others, while at the same time respecting Darren's gender! (also not josh's striped shirt representing aussie culture XD)
    Also! Just my two cents on Harper, if you're interested (just coz I read the very valid comments below!): I think I kind of gave Harper a bit more leeway in my mind because, like, I felt that the series was trying to portray how one traumatic experience can turn into more issues not just for the person who has experienced the traumatic event, but also for the people around them. Like Harper is obviously, very unstable, and still reeling from what happened and she needs help but she keeps finding it in the places where she got hurt and... idk she really needed therapy and not all the chaos that was going on in the series, but sometimes that's life? That said, this in no way justifies her actions towards Malakai, it's just that I can see why she's acting the way she does :))

    My Policeman the movie came out last year November on Prime. It's based on book of same name. It's based in 1950s in UK when it was illegal to be queer. The director said it was important to have an all queer cast. Harry Styles who seeked out this role for his personal reasons, Emma Corwin, David Dawson are the younger cast Gina McKee, Rupert Everett and Linus Roache play the older version. It's a good movie, book was better due to more details but the movies was touching and sad.

    omg i loveddd what you said at the end. this is so amazing to watch people react to my favourite show ever. as an aussie im so desensitized to this whole show and maybe its bc ive seen this show like 30 times im not joking, but i think what the person on the left said at the end was just so right. because this show is accurate. kids do this shit, a lot of it is dramatic but the sex and the racism and the misogyny, its all there, and i think kids behave mostly as a product of their environment. remember kids their age (16, 17) grew up on the internet.
    and i just can't explain to you how accurately everything is portrayed, especially being 17 in australia. so much of hbh shows aussie culture for how it truly is, especially the misogyny, parties etc, which is disgusting, but a sad reality. but also the fucking representation. as an aboriginal australian seeing 3 fucking first nations characters ON NETFLIX literally makes me cry. it has never been portrayed ever in media or in such a casual way(instead of the majority of the plot relating to aboriginal people) i could go on honestly. just the tiny details as well that only aussie understand, i cant. as a queer neurodivergent aboriginal australian, this show is all i could ever want. and i pray it gets 5 seasons, because it totally could the way they've set it up so far( relating to how the australian year level/ year grades work)

    Mardi Gras in Sydney is "Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras", in the context of the show it may be either the name of a night, or an event of the festival.
    For context, Malakai is a first nations character, I don't know how obvious that is for international viewers. First nations Australians are over policed, over represented in the justice system, alarmingly frequently die in police custody, and are, the subject of a lot of high profile police racism at the moment. Australians will have to vote in a referendum in October to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people as the first peoples of Australia in the constitution (after being left out entirely until the late 60s), and vote to enshrine a first nations voice to parliament in the constitution, basically an advisory body that can't be disbanded by future governments. As I'm sure you could appreciate given how fair and balanced and respectful Brexit was, referendums bring out the worst in people. This kind of representation is important as I think we've become numb to the realities of the constant suppression faced by first nations people, it's an abstract to so many non-indigenous Australians, and it's important to have their stories told.
    Loving your reactions to this series. I would love too see you react to Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

My comment on an earlier episode was responded to by another viewer that the toxic silence between Harper and Amerie is wholly justified due to the power of the secret, but so far, all we see is hurt and harm.

    Mardi Gras is its own celebration, separate from Pride but has beads and livery that can skew a bit Queer, I hear it's quite fun. So, this is the episode that I think people are a little insane! There is a fair amount of people that say Harper and Dusty sexually assaulted Malakai - I'm like whaaaaat?!!? People have argued with me, here om CZcams, that since Malakai was under the influence of substances and had been through something traumatic, it's assault. I couldn't make the leap and disagree whole heartedly with that lunacy! I'm sure someone will come for me on this comment, just know my internet friend you will not change my mind!
