I was born and raised a JW. It was a traumatic upbringing. It is a cult. They control who you are around, what you read, watch and associate with. They are high control because their theology is very weak. I think the internet really made it difficult for them, because the easy access to conflicting material. When I left the faith I was shunned by all friends and family (and to JWs thinking I left to live in sin, no, I left because I found that it wasn't the Truth, I faded- I was never disfellowshiped). I lost everything. It took years to get over the trauma of going from living in a high control group to being an outcast. I finally gained a relationship with Christ a few years ago, and was baptized a Catholic last summer. The Catholic faith is a blessing that I am so grateful to God for. I was at Adoration yesterday weeping, and thinking about all the Protestants who don't know what it's like to kneel in the presence of our Lord. My sincere hope is that JWs who feel trapped, find the courage to leave. I know you may fear the ostracization. But it is so beautiful on the other side! Bless you Matt for this discussion!

I was Bible Student with the Witnesses. I never went door-to-door. I made only one presentation on the stage. But I regularly attended.
Actually I so wanted to become a Witness because of their dedicated and lovely life style. But the problem was my studying the Bible. As I learned more and more, I saw the flaws in their theology.
Then I began to see the veracity of the Catholic Church as my Bible Study became more advanced. Finally I had to quit. They were so mistaken about Christ and other theology. I studied some more. I sought a Catholic RiCA class. And I was confirmed Catholic.

@larysnw418 Well I was raised Episcopal in NYC. You might want to rephrase that to: "The only two religions that misrepresent... " because I didn't learn anything in that church. They believe the Bible is an excellent socio-historical book of some moral value. That is how I was raised.
I learned enough Bible from the Witnesses to see that both they and the USA Episcopal Church are way off the mark.
And I said I left both of them. I don't see why you have such a combative tone with me. I wish I had been raised Lutheran or Baptist or something that believed in the Bible.
Since I knew virtually nothing about the Bible, of course I fell for whatever first group approached me. But unlike many other Bible Students, I deeply applied myself and saw they were wrong. And if you ever look at an Episcopal congregation, and then JW Congregation, the difference in dedication will stun you. I so wish they would find their way to adapt their teachings to what we know to be true. It saddens me that Episcopals are so far from the Bible and its truth.
I left my natal Church in 1994. GAFCON didn't yet exist. Some congregations put their parishes under the oversight of African Anglican Bishops! I just left and tried to find some place that would teach me the Bible. You are most fortunate to be born and raised Catholic. I was 40 when I saw the Episcopal Church was wrong. At 44 I was confirmed Catholic. I have never ever wanted to leave. This current Pope says lots of things I heard in the Episcopal Church. All I know is God will work a miracle so the next Pope will set the Church aright.

Watchtower orders JWs to believe this based on the fact that Jesus will descend with an archangel's voice. If he descends with the sound of trumpets, does that mean he is a trumpet? LOL
This passage simply says that an archangel’s voice will accompany the Lord’s descent from heaven, in the same manner that the bailiff’s voice (“All rise!”) accompanies the judge’s entrance into the courtroom.

I found it interesting when Matt Frad mentioned that he really got into Catholicism when he was 17. I was baptized Catholic, and when I entered middle school (public) I started loosing my faith. That continued pretty much until the schools shut down because of covid (I had just turned 16). 2020 was the year that I started coming back to Catholicism, and in October I quit my first job and started working at my local Chick-fil-A. Since I don't have to work on Sundays anymore, I've been able to start going to my favorite church again, which has really helped my faith. Also, one of my coworkers used to be Catholic, and she's mentioned having a discussion about Catholicism/protestantism, so I've been reading more Catholic material so I will be better prepared to talk about my faith. My 17th birthday is in about a month, so I thought it was cool that Matt started getting more into the faith around the same age as me. I'm excited to actually be prepared to defend the Catholic faith and really understand what I believe.

There was one particular family, when i was in high school, that everyone knew were JWs, because as we all celebrated Christmas or any birthday related stuff, they sat out. I remember being in a specific class where the teacher really wanted to do stuff for Christmas and whispering to someone "what's wrong with her?" Because she was just sitting off away from everyone and looking so very sad. She couldn't even accept the small gifts the teacher had given us. She couldn't eat any snacks. But honestly at that moment i realized that she was this way every day, but i hadn't noticed that until seeing it made obvious by this Christmas party. She looked on everyone with such suspicion and wariness. She barely spoke to anyone. She always looked sad and never smiled. I was shocked when i found out because there aren't many JWs in our area. But the few we have are very active. Now i have always been very polite to them except once. My husband and i lost one of our children at one month old. We visited his grave about a week after his funeral and there on top of it was JW literature, and i was furious. That cult knows no boundaries. Believe me i made it clear to them to keep that trash off my son's grave.

What had happened if a Hindu would have come on that morning on the Radio? See I left the catholic Church after 53 years, I prayed sincerely too! So God told You to join the Catholic Church and me to leave the Catholic Church! Does that make any sense! One of us has to be wrong! See, Your question to God was, is it JW or the Protestant Church? When You ask God for something, who do you think jumps in, to answer your question before God does? You are right, Satan does! How do we discern who is talking, not easy without knowledge of the word of God! In My opinion, and i base it on scripture, Satan wanted to have You for one of his strongholds (JW), when he saw, that You were asking God in prayer, He jumped in and gave You his next option (RCC), Satan has many options (many protestant churches belong to him too)! If i would be You, I would go on my knees and ask God again, not giving God choices as You did in your first prayer, but ask him for the full truth and your desire to learn Holy scripture, then he can answer your prayer, because now You are not limiting God!

It was explained to me that inactives just stop going for a while, but they are in good standing and can return whenever they want. Sometimes there is a family problem, they said. Other times someone is just burned out.
It could be "inactive," and they will visit you when they think an unknown difficulty of yours has passed.

I knew I could not teach anyone things I believed were false. So I parted ways. I studied on my own for a while, looking up Catholic theology. When I felt certain enough, I registered for the class, and and was confirmed a year later. It was the best decision I made in my life! I was so happy. Then, of course, this Brogolio mess took me out of my comfort. But, I am trusting God. Things are still in motion, so I will await God's action.

Matt, you are far more generous to the JW's than I am. They have roped in a dear friend of mine and while she hasn't pulled completely away from the people of the world yet I fear it will only be a matter of time. I've seen the way they have run their game on her. At first the commitment is minimum but over time they demand more and more until you give yourself entirely to the church. I say the church, not God or Christ because that is the center of who they are, their all consuming Kingdom Hall.
On the question of whether or not thy are a cult, the whole practice of shunning places them in that camp. Their goal is to isolate and tear down any remnant of individuality a person may possess. It's why they won't even allow you acknowledge your birthday or the birthday of anyone else, including your kids. If I left Catholicism and joined a Protestant church nobody would disown me. They would still see me as a child of God and a follower of Christ because for Catholics and mainstream Protestants, Christ is at the center of our beliefs, not the church. JW's may say it ain't so, but they elevate their church above all else.
I no longer discuss matters of faith with my friend because she has become convinced that everything she was taught prior to falling in with the JW's is a lie. I did notice that the deeper she got into the cult her focus shifted away from the teachings of the New Testament. Their belief system seems to be more of a curious blend of Islam and Judaism. Like I say, she has not totally shut out the rest of us but I can see a time where she will. In the past I would point out inconsistencies between what JW's teach and what the Gospels say but she would dismiss them out of hand and still insist that JW is a branch of Christianity even though she acknowledges that they deny the Trinity and the Divinity of Christ. That's kind of like me saying I'm a Muslim even though I don't believe the prophet received his revelations from God.
I will continue to pray for my friend and all people who have been deceived by their false teachings but I have no time for the JW cult. I'll call it that because that's what it is. Any movement where the church comes first and parents disown their children for even questioning some self-appointed group of elders is a cult in my mind. I'll just leave it at that. I'm glad this young man escaped. I hope many more follow his lead.

It is likely that the JW's respect your current choice and position, and that they are on the lookout for those seeking to worship in truth as Jesus did.
That is to say, by following in Jesus' own footsteps by worshiping, teaching and preaching of the GOD and Father of Jesus Christ, as Jesus did on earth.
Which seems odd to me personally, as so many people today seem oblivious to the fact that they are worshiping teaching and preaching of a god that is completely unlike the GOD of Jesus Christ. Here again, outlining that it is Jesus Christ that we must follow rather than churches and men.

I actually got into a debate with a witness here on CZcams. I had no idea who I was speaking to or what they believed, but when they started denying the trinity and that Jesus is God, I figured it out.
It's hard to have debate with someone whom I have so little common with as far a beliefs. It's nice to learn a little more about them.
I quoted scriptures about Jesus's claims to be God, but they got very defensive and kinda rude pretty quickly, so I just left it alone.
    Very interesting discussion, though

    • @vahppus9958
      @vahppus9958 Před 8 měsíci

No, there’s no point in getting rude - and I have never met any rude Jehovah’s witnesses. I´m a Jehovah’s witness myself, and I hope you don’t define the following as rude. As with any other topic, the burden of proof is in the person that claims something. Since many claim the doctrine of trinity is what the bible teach, the burden of proof is on those who says so. Does this seem fair and logic to you?
If you want to argue that the trinity is a biblical topic, take a look at what it is about. You will find it in the so called «Athanasian Creed». If you want to prove «the Athanasian Creed» , aka «doctrine of trinity», try to do this: Read sentence by sentence in the Athanasian Creed, and show verse by verse in the Bible how the wordings harmonize.
My experience is that no-one has ever done it. Not ever. And therefore I can not conclude the idea to be biblical. And the reason is quite logic, I think, because it is the Bible that contains what is to be concluded as biblical stuff.
If you yourself feel like believe in the trinity, it’s up to you of course. But what kind of trinitarian belief? You might know that in ancient Babylon, in Egypt and India they also had trinities? If you dig a bit deeper in the topic, see if you can spot any difference between the Church trinity and how trinity is according Chinese Buddhism:“The Three are all included in one substantial essence. The three are the same as one; not one, and yet not different; without parts or composition. When regarded as one, the three persons are spoken of as the Perfect One (Tathagata). There is no real difference [between the three persons of the trinity]; they are manifestations, different aspects of the same unchanging substance.” -Origin and Evolution of Religion, p. 348.
You say, «It's hard to have debate with someone whom I have so little common with as far a beliefs. It's nice to learn a little more about them.» Yes, it’s interesting to learn what other people think, and why they think as they do. And if understanding you correct, we both have the Bible in common :)
      - And when speaking about common ground. Genesis 2:15-17 says that if Adam was to eat from a specific tree that God forbid him to eat from, if he did anyway, he would die. Question: What would happen if he didn’t eat from that tree? Ever thought about that?

Quote: "When quoting, the meaning of the original quote should be apparent, even when using ellipses (…). A classic source of misquotes is the Watchtower publication Should You Believe in the Trinity? (ti), using ellipses to hide words like "but", "however", "therefore" to present a completely different point from that being made by the source. Furthermore, provision of only partial references to the source of quotes make it difficult and time consuming to locate the original quote. Examples of misquotes follow."
