- How to make a simple aquarium divider for betta fish or other fish using plastic canvas and other common materials from the craft store. As promised, here's a video tutorial showing how I made the aquarium dividers shown in my betta fish video from a few weeks ago. These are SO simple and inexpensive to make! Plus if you're concerned about your fish being able to see one-another through the plastic canvas, you can even use a double layer (offset the layers so they can't see through). If you do that, I would recommend using a sponge filter in each section of the divided tank because that will cut down on water flow between sections quite a bit. Make sure your dividers go all the way up to tank lid too, because bettas are really good jumpers!

I know this video isn’t about goldfish but I just found your channel and didn’t realize people love their goldfish as much as I do! About 4 years ago I got two 10 cent feeder fish and had them in a 20 gal and didn’t know much about fish. They were about half and inch and since then one is about 5in and the other is about 3.5 and they’re doing swimmingly in an 110 gal! I love them so much and with proper care I didn’t realize how long they can live. People are so uneducated about fish but they really are amazing and make me so happy :)
Jen gave away everything she had for the fish and other pets just after Christmas.
She stated she was moving and getting out of the hobby of taking care of ALL pets.
She's gone as far as CZcams or any sort of social media.

I know this video is old, but this completely saved my sanity today. Been dealing with warring polar blue cichlids all week. I was able to use an old poster frame and air line suction cups to fasten it. The mesh wasn't even $4! Thank you so much!

When I made mine I used heavy duty plastic canvas that did not need the binder edging because it was rigid enough on its own. I also used suction cups they sell for hanging Christmas lights in windows. They have channels in them that are meant to hold the lights, but they will hold the plastic canvas perfectly!
I like the finished look the binder edging gives, but it's not necessary if you can find the heavy plastic canvas.

You are an inspiration. I saw the goldfish tour you gave The DIY King and saw your Butterfly Betta and had to have one. Now that I want more, these divider are great to know about.
A little story...when I was 10, about 57 yrs ago I had a collection of Bettas. I even had some breed but small enough food was a problem and the fry didn't make it.
The cool thing back then was the Bettas were 3 times the size you buy these days many were 4 inches long and they went for $.59 a piece. Boy the times have changed since then.
So crazy she’s been gone so long. I love her videos a lot and she just seems like such a good person. I know i don’t know her, to her I’m just a complete stranger that happens to watch her videos but i really hope she is okay, and whatever she’s doing she finds joy and fulfilment. Best wishes Jennie.

I highly highly encourage you to do more research on divided betta tanks. For one thing, the fish will be stressed if they are able to see each other through the divider, and females should not be kept in the same water as a male because they can become egg bound if a male is nearby but they are unable to mate. Since you have a 5 gallon tank that you were using before, I suggest you keep the female in that and keep the males in the divided 10 gallon.
I realize this might not fit your ideal aesthetic for the tanks, but it will be much better for your fish and I know you care about that.

I'm a fish behaviour researcher, there's some recent evidence that having the opportunity to display "aggressive" behaviours can be very rewarding for certain fish species and something that they're highly motivated to do. It's entirely possible that preventing them from ever expressing this highly motivated natural behaviour could be more detrimental to their welfare than allowing it.
@@madiis18account nowhere did I say the fish should never flare or think that another fish is near. With my bettas, I have a little paper cutout in the shape of another fish that I exercise my fish with by letting them do their territorial behaviors. My arguement in my original comment was that it isnt good for them to feel that stress constantly. Having another betta visible to them all the time by having a see-through divider makes them feel like their territory is constantly being threatened.
There's also the risk of the stress making their immune systems weaker. I had a divided 10 gal once, and the one make eventually started to decline in health. Rotting fins and lethargy, plus a hard time swimming. Eventually I had to feed him by hand because he couldn't get it on his own. I tried extra water changes and different medications, but nothing helped.
I moved him into his own 5.5, and he almost immediately started to get better. He just couldn't handle a shared space, even when he couldn't see his neighbour. I haven't risked a divided rank since.
I do have a sorority, but I keep a very close eye on it, plus big water changes and a ton of plants
Egg bound is not caused by males. Egg bound females will always be egg bound, wether she is by herself, or in sorority, or in split tank with the male. Normal females will always be producing eggs, release them (and eat them) or absorb the eggs inside her body. I keep seeing people all over the internet talking about male hormones causing egg bound but in fact, there is never scientific research backing that up. All the experienced keepers/breeders I know have never experienced this behavior. So please help stop the rumors.
I hope you begin to feel happy and healthy again before coming back - remember to always look after yourself before thinking about us! You can use filter mats as dividers, and use them as a matten-filter. Just pump the water from one side of the tank to the opposite side. The water will flow back through the filter mats, and the water is filtered. There will be no need to clean the mats for a year or more.

It’s soooo weird that you just uploaded this video talking about dividers. Because I just made my own betta tank divider last night! I used mini suction cups and plastic hard mesh from a craft store. It cost me a whole dollar. I didn’t use the edging. All I used was the mesh canvas and suction cups. Works perfectly!

This is the first video of yours I've ever watched and it was great but I just HAD to tell you that your hair is AMAZING. Seriously it's the best thing I've ever seen as far as "crazy" hair. I currently have blue tips and it's the first time I've ever done something wild (lol) with my hair.

This is awesome and couldn't have come at a better time! My boyfriend wants a Betta fish but we also want to breed shrimp! Now we use this in our 10 gallon and have both without worry! Also yes our cats love every empty tank! Aquarium terririuam, screen cage, box, they love jumping into or on them all!! 🙄😅😂🤣

It's called plastic canvas, you can get it from the needlework section of most craftstores, they are usually quite cheap at about a dollar or less for each sheet
