    The first of these is an absolutely stunning blue dial Rolex Date reference 1500, a watch that is truly the perfect storm of vintage Rolex. With its custard tritium lume, sunburst blue dial, and original Oyster bracelet, to call it classic would be an understatement. Given the date function of the watch, it makes this example a perfect option for those who adore the Datejust, but may not be as into the fluted bezel as a design feature.
    The second of the two is another Rolex Date reference 1500, but this one is infinitely funkier. While the dial was originally a beautiful sunburst gray in color, it has since turned almost lavender, a color that is particularly difficult to put a specific name to but one that is endlessly appealing. In many ways, this example is almost reminiscent of the current Rolex Oyster Perpetual 114300RGSO, more affectionately known as the "Grape" dial because of the slightly darker shade of purple. Also featuring its original Oyster Bracelet, this is a true example of what happens when age truly does come before beauty.

    Really cool and interesting subject. I totally agree that you can wear any watch size that you see fit, it's all about the feel of the watch. I have a vintage gold Omega from 1966 that is 34mm, so a smaller watch considering the modern standards, however that watch is so versatile and can easily be dressed up on a with a brown leather strap and dressed down with a colored nato. This watch completely changes character depending on the situation, but I think it varies a lot from watch to watch, it's all about the feel of the particular watch on your wrist.

  • @pilotstyle123

    I bought my first 40mm automatic which got me into watch collecting. I then gradually slipped into 36-34 territory and now im down to even smaller ones. The problem is now I dont like the 40mm anymore, its too big, heavy, uncomfortable. I got a 1920s 25x36mm rectangular watch and I sometimes get a shock in the shower because i think that I forgot to put it off, its that comfortable.

    • @eckergus
      @eckergus Před 6 lety +1

      pilotstyle123, I am with you. I got into vintage as well. In my collection I have a 1962 33.5mm and a 1955 32.5mm Longines. They are my favorites dress watches. I also happen to have a 34mm Rolex Date Ref. 15223 and I love the thing. I have a “large case” chronograph from the 40’s that is 36mm. I now also feel that anything larger than 38mm is too large for me. Granted, I am 5’ 5” tall and have 6 and 3/4” wrists. But yes, I understand.

    • @joshsmith7812
      @joshsmith7812 Před 5 lety

      Hmm yeah completely agree! My smallest watch is 32mm and my biggest watch is 45mm, 38mm is my sweet spot usually. That being said the 45mm doesen't have nearly as much wrist time as my smaller watches.

    This is not an attack on you Christian but so many people and on the forums make a big deal about watch sizes but I just dont get it. I am just happy it expands the watch community regardless of what size watches people wear. There is no wrong size. The right size is what you as an individual likes to wear.

  • @DMBVR4
    @DMBVR4 Před 6 lety +13

    This is a great video full of excellent points... however, you can look at this from the complete opposite perspective. Since smaller watches are coming back into style, I don't think those of us who genuinely prefer bigger watches should be brainwashed into the "preconcieved notion" that big watches are just for the big manly man who think they are too big and tough for a 34mm. Maybe they just prefer a bigger watch. There are no preconceived notions here, it's just taste. I am in no way afraid of small watches, I wear my 1949 32mm Omega all the time, but I also love my 42mm Seiko. It also largely depends on the watch itself. I much prefer the 44mm Breitling Chronomat over the 41mm version... it just looks better on my wrist. At the same time, id buy a 36mm Datejust over a 39+ version... it just looks better. The Skydweller looks WAY too big for what it is, almost obnoxiously too big, but a Panerai in the same meaurement.. even thicker at that... seems small. It's crazy how the style and shape of a watch can make it seem twice the size or twice as small as another despite being objectively the exact same dimensions.
    PS: that purple Rolex > blue ALL DAY. I'd rock that shit every single day 😎

    I think if I didn’t like watches I’d still wear a 34mm because it’s a little more sophisticated and refined. As for the color I would definitely wear the purple but I think it depends on the occasion, it’s more suited for days that are more relaxed and casual.
    (It just really depends on the person because some men might think it’s to small and the purple is very feminine)

    I own a 34mm OP w/Blue Dial..........a fantastic watch! I have small wrists and the 34mm is the perfect size for me. Previously, I owned a 36mm Oyster Perpetual DateJust that my wife bought me for me in 1987 as a Father’s Day gift. I wore that Rolex every single day until 2011 when I had to have my right thumb amputated due to cancer in the nail bed. It was very difficult to wind the watch and, stupidly, I sold it. Seven years later, I decided to try wearing a watch again and was able to manipulate the crown with my opposite hand. I saw my Blue Dial OP in a Rolex AD and bought it on the spot. I love this watch, though I still wish I’d kept my previous watch for sentimental reasons. Also, I’m in the market for a Ref. 114270 Explorer which I’ll buy when I find one with box and papers. I’m not a collector and treat my Rolex exactly like my Porsche........a daily driver! For me.........Nothing Even Comes Close To Rolex and Porsche.

    From watching your show and others, watch size is a matter of choice and what looks good on your wrist and feels comfortable. Every persons wrist is a different size. So one size does not fit all. And yes, I agree whatever the size, even if you have a big wrist and choose to wear a smaller size case, its about being comfortable and confident in your skin. For me, a 39-40mm is ideal but I own 2 Rolexes, one a 40mm and one 41mm. and they are great. I tried a 36mm Datejust and it just felt on the small size but anything bigger than 41mm would be too big. And let's not forget thickness. That can have an impact as well on your wrist. That's why being able to try one watch before you buy is important.

And the opposite is true too: smaller wristers (which I'm part of, I built my channel around that after all) shouldn't be afraid to go bigger if they find a watch attractive. My Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date 42 Auto certainly fits that description... This is a hobby and a passion, and for me it's all about fun. Not about trying to please anyone else's judgment or taste. Men just don't care, they wear whatever they want and don't try to please or impress anybody :) Cheers form Belgium!

    I need to try one of these 34mm on. I think it would be to small for me (7.25 in wrist), but that is what I thought before I impulse bought my day-date 36mm. Too bad no midwest ADs carry pre-owned versions of these to try on.

    I believe it’s all about the size of your hand but I currently have a 34 mm Rolex oyster perpetual I hate huge watches the biggest I would ever wear is a 40 mm

    Thank you for your excellent and thoughtful expose on this 34 mm Date. I have been thinking about this very watch for a long time. I have a small (6.3inch ) wrist, and it seems like it would be so much more comfortable than a larger, heavier watch. I really love the size, and the classic history it bring with it into our time right now. Thank you so much.
    "Jill" was a typo that was too much trouble to correct right now. I am a man.

    That dial looks grey to me which is fine, but I wouldn't wear a 34mm because my wrist is 7.3/4"

    The concept of Liquor Run is so pretentious if you were to describe it to someone not interested in wine or watches, but you guys make it such a wholesome, unpretentious and enjoyable series of youtube videos. I've recently discovered this series and I love it. You've also got me wanting a purple rolex and that pink Mido Commander DayDate

    The 34mm is the perfect size. This used to be the standard and correct size. Men who require larger watches are compensating for something. Purple is my favorite color. I would not wear a watch that color only because it is not classic. For me this level of watch has to be the one. Either the 34mm white OP or the 963 Air-King 34m white is the perfect watch.

  • @Questionnaireapologetics

    2 beautiful Rolex’s I’d choose the purple and put it on a strap.
