    It seems a bit weird watching a silent movie about music and an orchestra, and having to imagine the sounds.

    You also need to keep in mind, for those who will criticize, the obi style in which a Maiko's obi was tied may be darari now but that style only came around in the 1930s and after.

    @kruthix No, geisha can dance and play music in groups (look at the Kyo Odori, Asuma Odori, etc.) and the new girl that looks uncoordinated in the clip may have been a new maiko.

    @TofuCowsGoesMOO Some were definitely maiko, you can tell by their hairstyle. They did become geisha younger back then... but they were also waaaaaaaay tinier back then. They look like little people... if you know what i mean.

    Most of the younger girls at the beginning aren't geisha; they are clearly Maiko, or, apprentice geisha. There are other entertainers in Japan, obviously--but most of the girls at the beginning--even some who are dressed out of the general Maiko way, double as Maiko. Others were singers or shamisen players and the singers are usually the ones that weren't fit to become Maiko.

    They were so young back then >

      @emanuel-vw8rg Před 3 lety

      Late but, theyre both apprentices and some of the women playing instruments in the back are full fledged geisha or geiko.

    Those are Maiko and Geiko, instead of just regular women. If you look at the hairstyles you'll see they are what Maiko wore during those years. Geiko were much more demure and simplistic in styles than Maiko so they are usually harder to tell.

  • @TheShrededward
    @TheShrededward Před 3 lety

    some geisha school I imagine. They started off young back in the day. These days, 16 or 17 is considered young to start. that one girl on the left looks to be maybe 12 or so.

    昔、9歳で踊りの稽古をしていた舞妓が当たり前にいた。20歳で芸妓になるまでに熟練した技術を身に着けるには、十代のすべての時間が必要だった。今は、一人前になるためには、時間的に無理がある。

    These hardly look like "professional" entertainers, since there is no co-ordination in the dance moves and the girls look very young. And just how hard could it be to learn to beat a drum?

  • @VictrolaJazz

    Japan was dull even in the 20's! They should have traded in those boring instruments for the banjo and saxophone and those kimonos for short skirts and those folk dances for the Charleston!
