    Yeah his singing has definitely come a lot further since his last special, he's really made some big strides. The special was amazing, I love his other ones- which are definitely more "comedies" than this one was. It's still funny, when he wants it to be.. but it's really more of a window into Bo.. how he works, his process, and what he's struggled with. It's very jarring. But I think it's the best thing he's done so far.

    In his special 'what' he is truly amazing, and it pretty much defined his style. Make Happy is his masterpiece and probably the best comedy show I ve watched. But Inside... I wouldnt even classify it as a comedy special. It simply a masterful work, a one of its kind. An existential breakdown of a character and the documentation of it. It s an hour long and you could easily make an hour long video analysing it. And as if it was not enough, it was written, produced, filmed and edited to its entirety by him inside his room. That includes music production, recording, camera work, lighting etc. To call this man a genius is an understatement.

    If you wanna watch Inside (which you definitely should!!), I HIGHLY recommend watching his first two specials, What. and Make Happy first. You don't need them to "get" Inside, but the added context and knowledge of Bo's art, character and personal mental struggles will make this one hit 10x harder. In my opinion, Inside is his magnum opus, and while it's not as comedic as the other two, it delivers three times harder on the emotional front. I watched it two days after it aired and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Bo doesn't just make great comedy and music, he's a performance artist who manages to get into your head like few others can.

    For Context:
    The song is sung from the perspective of the corporations that built the internet to be the place it is today and how they’ve waited for the generation who’d be born into the age of the modern day internet. They’re the shady salesmen promising you the world.
    After 9/11, the patriot act gave corporations enough surveillance power to abuse and gather whatever they need. Parents threw their kids into the internet as a distraction and the villains took advantage of it. Anything and everything is available to you in the internet, but there’s always a cost.

      And also, the internet is so full of content, of random *stuff* that it could hold people's attention forever, but it has also deleterious effects. It's kind of uncontrollable, at this point. So I think there's also an element of that. There's everything on the internet... and you can't quite tear yourself away from it.

    • @AndragonLea
      @AndragonLea Před 2 lety +2

      Even if the cost is just an almost obsessive addiction to access and validation. I can't count the number of friends and family I have that feel naked and insecure if they're not within cellphone range.

    • @CordovanSplotchVT
      @CordovanSplotchVT Před 2 lety +9

      Nah, if he was singing from the perspective of the corporations the lyrics would be cleaned of all references to anything nasty or shocking, and it would come across as a car commercial telling you that having the internet is all you need for a problem free wonderful life experience.
      The perspective he's singing from is the unfiltered, unsanitized experience of being on the Internet, as if he is the voice of the Internet itself personified.
      Corporations aren't in control of the Internet, at least not yet, though not for lack of trying.
      The internet is like a crazed and completely unhinged hivemind of everything humanity contains and then some, like a madman supervillain with no limitations in regards to morals, ethics, honour, logic or common sense who is always in complete control, because when you're always going in every imaginable direction at the same time, there's no way to lose control.
      Today's Internet is what you get when you take the sum total of all humanity's madness and dump it into a great big pot, and let it stir itself.
      The Internet sells itself.

    this song is so incredibly amazing, but the bridge in the middle makes it 10x better in my opinion. He started posting funny bits on CZcams for his brother who was overseas and went viral at 16 and got swept into this stuff so much faster and harder than was healthy for someone it even an adult yet and his shows were really at the end of it, just to quote “can’t handle this right now,” “come and watch the skinny kid with the steadily declining mental health as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself.”
    All of this to take time off and try and get better and focus on other stuff and go “ok I feel like I’m better now, I worked hard, I think I can go back to performing again” only for 2020 to happen and now is after all of that work back to where he started

    I like how he said "he just sent you more. don't act surprised, you know like it"
    Its accurate because when you are sent the first photo, people who don't like it would immediately block the person and report them. They wouldn't stick around for the photos after that.

    He stopped doing live shows about 5 years ago because of having extreme anxiety disorder. During 2020 he made this special in his one room guest house, doing all the lighting/camera/sound setup by himself.

    I remember when you could get select amount of hours of free internet from those AOL CD's at walmart and rite-aid. Me and my friends would go and collect a bunch of them so we could play World of Warcraft all night lol.

    I'm sure it's been said better in the comments but the whole special of 'INSIDE' is amazingly made, weather it be the lighting, the audio and video, or the actual music and lyric production that Bo has done. I'd definitely recommend watching the whole thing but it does get pretty dark at times. Still an amazing experience to watch it tho.

    Even though Bo Burnham was born in 1990, he's literally made himself an icon of his generation and each generation after 9/11. I only discovered Bo a few years ago and the immense talent and wit he has has contributed so much to my life, it's incredible. "Inside" is definitely is true single masterpiece of all the comedy specials he's done.
