I don't laugh like that when I've been up for that long..more like little chuckles of desperation of "can I finally get more than 4 hours of sleep a night?" right up until I crash on the weekend and sleep a solid total of 24 in spats of 6. I love the Character Bo is embodying as "The Internet". It's so accurate. If the Internet was a person, this is what he'd be. Totally impartial and completely psychopathic. No judgment but in total and complete control. A desireable and welcoming puppet master.

When the music speeds up and he starts throwing out one jarring suggestion after another, for me it really mimics that experience of getting push notifications, algorithms suggesting the next video, next article etc, trying to predict and shove on you what they think will keep you there and drive engagement. I feel like it's showing not just the internet itself getting out of hand but the user (listener, in this case) losing control of curating their experience because more and more is getting pushed at them?

I hate push notifications for exactly this reason.
I'm neurodivergent and struggle to keep my focus on everything I gotta do (usually without help), and getting those notifications sometimes messes me up. Breaks my concentration and makes me forget what I'm doing.
And I am always very pointedly aware that *when* a notification interrupts, it isn't really some friendly reminder from the app, it's whatever particular company it is calling me to drop my life at the moment and go view their content (and their ads!). It's no wonder people can resent such "harmless" invasiveness and manipulation.

I wholeheartedly agree. I've been shamelessly binging reactions of Bo's new special, and the vast majority just laugh at the jokes while not understanding what the song's really about. I do understand it's not necessarily a given that the reactors realize his lyrics often have this deeper meaning, which is why I get really giddy when someone who either are unfamiliar with Bo's work or blindly react to a song understands the actual message he tries to get across.

Without a little boredom, we'd be chasing one thing after another. Boring times are when you do the pro-active tasks that are important and unurgent, or when you make goals and plan. One thing that hit me was the line "Insatiable you." He says it so innocently but insatiable means impossible to satisfy. And in the contexts of human behavior and the internet that is fucking terrifying. We are never satisfied, its scrolling from one thing to the next to the next to the next.
Also to me when he starts laughing and being a little more manic, that to me signifies the moment someone becomes hooked to the internet or your smart phone. He starts laughing, saying we have anything and everything, and your hooked.

Bo Burnham (who is literally a 20-year-old kid at the time) says he makes it a point to not make anything up, but find humour in the things that happen in reality, which is inherently absurd. This really hits different with people our age. I'm turning 30 this week. We're the generation that saw it all unfold, understanding both sides before and after this digital age. I remember my first PC, my first mobile phone, the first time a phone had internet, the first time a phone had a camera, but Im young enough to jump on all different social platforms as they were created up to tiktok and snap. Like we can see this whole thing happening, my parents getting hooked on Facebook, my neices and nephews doing tiktok dance routines. My auntie sharing fake news in family group chats. Like what the fuck are we even doing at this point???
Props to Bo for being able to create this, putting our sense of confusion and dread into songs because I feel we're the generation that is stuck between worlds, trying to fix and figure this all out.

Being a millennial and having felt that sudden transition I fully understand what Bo meant when he said "It was always the plan to put the world in your hand". He also talks about how unstoppable we are supposed to be. These things are exactly how I felt when the internet first became popular. It felt like a tool that was made to make our lives easier because of our ability to find tons of resources and connections for a good future. However it has overwhelmed/distracted me a lot and I have wasted most of my early 20's on the internet not going anywhere in life.
I'm 27 and trying to turn it around but it's not easy. I spent all day today watching CZcams... At least now I know how dangerous it is to use the internet when it's marketed to keeping people's attention. I wish I were told this growing up. It shortens attention spans and makes it hard to sit down and learn something for a few hours a day. Instant gratification is a click away.

I'm a person so young I don't really recall when there was no internet. My take on it all is that all the internet gives is a more free outlet to put in all of humanity's good and bad.
Sure, there's all those things on the internet, but it's not like the real world is all good either, if I were to list all the bad things in real life, I can pretty much say the same point as the point. I know too much internet is bad, but that's just it: "too much", and even then, I'd reckon that we need to know of those things the way we do, since all of those things are from other humans too.
The internet is just a more free outlet of all things we have. Good and bad, all of it. The way people think we shouldn't be on the internet anymore with the message of the song they got, it's just... ignoring. Wanting to stay in the bliss of ignorance from all those things. We all learned of those things yet not any more people are doing relatively way more bad things out of all of those. Being addicted to the internet is bad, yes, but if all your problem with the internet is "think of the children having to learn of this.
They NEED to learn of it either way, if you don't want them to learn the way you did by just stumbling onto those things, then GUIDE them. All you shouldn't do is prevent them from knowing of it, because it is out there still, those bad things are just... out there. If you don't let them know to handle it as much as you do now, they'll most likely do the same thing as you if you're any less than infallible about it.
Let the children know of those things. The world has a whole lot of bad in it, the internet just makes that all the more apparent.

Two things about this song I noticed hard.
    1. "Be Happy, Be Horny, Be Bursting with Rage- We've got a Million Ways To Engage" ..... other than Sadness. Every other emotion is acceptable to express online, but Sadness is a taboo.
If you post about depression, you often get crude comments, you're told to suck it up, and it's like empathy is discouraged. "Apathy is a Tragedy" indeed.
    2. "When the Towers Fell.." is the lowest set of notes in the whole song... as if marking the point where we hit a rock bottom... and I personally feel that in the time after that, from what I remember, the Internet became a more aggressive and hateful place.
Bo says a lot in things he also doesn't say, things he just hints, but the point is for you to catch those hints, to read between those lines, and understand he's trying to slap sense back into us through music and a guise of 'comedy'.

He's multi-talented and brilliant and well worth the views its gotten. Bo Burnham has never been afraid to do whatever the fuck he wants to which means that he has a lot more freedom in experimenting with all types of music adding in kooky sounds and being okay with tempo and tone changes whereas 90% of people wouldn't shy away at that.
