Paw Patrol The Movie: Unexpectedly Good (Review/Analysis)

  • Paw Patrol is a show on Nick Jr. that initially aired in 2013, and after 8 years and 8 seasons, it became popular enough to have its own theatrical film. Surprising and impressive to say the least, this movie was certainly highly anticipated by fans of the show and those (like me) who wanted to know what the big deal is about this show that it would get a legitimate movie made after it.
So is this movie any good? And if so, how does it manage to still be entertaining within the limits of a G rating. Those questions and more I will be answering in today’s review and analysis of Paw Patrol the Movie!

      1. I had no idea it existed until (maybe?) 2016/2017. When I first saw it, I immediately hated it and never EVER watched it. I promise.
      2. This movie came out 1 year ago today, and I gave it no attention as well (despite the better/decent-looking animation). Until randomly on November 29th, I watched this (via Paramount+) and had the same result as this review. I was rooting for Chase the whole time (secretly).
      3. Somehow, I watched this ON THE BIG-SCREEN on July 13th this year. I have videos of the theater’s reaction (because of kids 😂) for proof.
      4. Today, I wish the best of luck from this movie. So happy 1st birthday. Can’t wait for the Mighty Movie next year.

@@DrasticFox2004 That's interesting. It's similar to my story with this franchise but with slight differences. I was kinda on my way out of Nick Jr. by the time it was introduced. If I were to watched a Nick Jr. show (for some reason) I would want to see something that I personally found nostalgic. Eventually, though, Paw Patrol became this huge juggernaut, and when it eventually became a movie (with noticeably better animation quality) I was intrigued. So (in part because of this YT channel) I decided I would watch and review this film on August 21st, the day after its release. Having no expectations, I was pleasantly surprised that it not only managed to be engaging for a G rated film, but also had a subplot of mental distress which was done fairly well. And of course I made this video and the rest is history.

I actually prefer Chase being the main of the movie. I would definitely choose just one fleshed-out main character, rather than an inconsistent and jumbled storyline because it had too many characters to focus. It's not a perfect movie, but it definitely exceeds my expectations, especially considering it's based on TV series for preschoolers. And like you mentioned, coping with traumas and low self-esteem was a pretty heavy topic for a Nick Jr. movie, which surprised me a lot.
And yes I agree with you that Ryder was really unlikeable. He has literally no soul nor personality throughout the movie, he's just there so the plot can progress. I wish he had more screentime in the movie, like maybe a scene where he regretted for not being a good enough leader, realised how he neglected Chase the entire time, and the maybe the other dogs could comfort Ryder as well.

    • @StickyBrickBuilder
      @StickyBrickBuilder  Před rokem +1

I know I said I didn’t like Ryder in the video, but I feel like I’ve now realized just how unethical his actions are. I mean, the general premise of the show is already a little iffy, but the movie specifically doesn’t give Ryder any accountability.
I’m assuming the creators didn’t want to paint Ryder in a negative light in the slightest, but it ultimately means he doesn’t have any moment of reflection or apology even when he did handle Chase’s situation incredibly poorly. And the fact that everyone just unwaveringly follows him also makes it feel like he’s taking advantage of the trust of children (despite technically being a child himself).
I don’t think the intention ever was for Ryder to be a bad person, but his lack of legitimate character ultimately paints him as a worse, not better, leader.
(I do find it kind of funny, however, that this movie based on a Nick Jr. show has me questioning the relative ages of the characters and the ethics of employing them to perform life-threatening tasks. It’s like, I really shouldn’t care, but the film kinda FORCES me to think about it!)

I'd say this is probably one of my most favourite movies of all time, next to stuff like Avatar 1 and 2. To keep it brief
    - Animation was gorgeous
    - Music slaps
    - One of very few movies to ever make me cry
    - Had some funny, self aware moments
    - Solid messages and themes for a kids movie
    - Chase felt very realistic considering I've had similar experiences and I related to him a lot. Feelings of being a hindrance rather than a help, being lied to without people considering the repercussions of that lie, trying to run away from issues rather than face them and giving up because you just don't think you can do it

And mayor humdinger did felt annoying and I wonder how come no one in the paw patrol universe didn't arrested this guy cuz if mayor humdinger ever did something like that in the real world he would definitely be in jail in big time! So yeah bad boys whatcha gonna do when they come for you well chase kinda said he was arrested but I guess it was a joke or something idk ? But it's a alright good movie other than that

The PAW Patrol movie is honestly one of the biggest surprises of 2021.
Given the source material they had to work with, they could've easily slummed it for an easy paycheck and just shat out another worthless school holiday cash-grab to make money off of hopeless parents and their loudmouth bratty kids.
But to my shock, the movie had more effort put into it than it has any right. Compared to what I was expecting, it was genuine fun for an all-ages audience and it was alot more thought-provoking and mature than most adult-animated material these days especially in regards to how they handled Chase.
Not saying the movie is perfect but dammit, I would be lying if I said it wasn't a great family film worth seeing. I would say that it is advised that you have to watch a bit of the show to get better context but other than that, anyone can view it with no regrets whatsoever.
Suffice to say, I can't wait for the sequel next year.

I mean, Skye was busy saving literally everybody, and Zuma and Liberty were saving the family from drowning, which I guess was urgent. But Rubble, Rocky, and Marshall only escorted everyone into the building. I'm assuming they didn't do anything after that, so they could've easily helped out in other ways. Of course, they weren't present when Chase went to go save Ryder, so you could say they simply didn't know. Or they are so devoted to following their direct orders that they decided to stay inside the building. Or the movie, instead of switching back and forth between each puppy's roles to indicate they were happening at the same time, decided to do them one after the other to make it more straightforward for kids. Or I'm probably thinking way too much about this...

I personally didn’t really mind the redundancy of chases arc cuz it kinda made it more believable in my opinion, as you get your hopes up believing it’ll all be fine just for you to do or get to whereever but just to have a emotional moment freaking out. If you’ve watched the actual show then you know how it hit when he said rocky and zuma wearnt really necessary during the movie😭😭😭.
