To put Birmingham's achievement into perspective after Newcastle bounced straight back by becoming champions and West Brom were runners up in 2009/10 it took 6 years before another newly relegated team to bounce back to Premier League via automatic promotion and that was Burnley who were champions in 2015/16. Of the relegated Premier League teams that came into the championship between 2009/10 to 2014/15 only 3 had bounced straight back up before Burnley's achievement and they were West Ham 2011/12, QPR 2013/14 and Norwich 2014/15 all via the play offs

@@TheOriginalEwan at the time of posting but yep Norwich and Watford and possibly Bournemouth could add to this stat never before have the 3 relegated sides gone straight back up again 1997/98 with Forest and Boro and 2015/16 with Hull and Burnley were the closest but QPR in 15/16 and Sunderland 97/98 let the side down

@@classicsportclassictiyl8547 Have three newly promoted teams to the Premier League ever been relegated the same season?

4:57 what a difference a year makes a year prior to this when Birmingham were relegated from the Premier League David Gold was ready to quit after he and his colleagues David Sullivan and Baroness Brady got a lot of stick from the Birmingham fans due to the failed takeover by Carsen Yeung which led to Steve Bruce walking out and taking the Wigan job and the teams failure to stay up. But by the start of 2008/09 he had changed his mind and wanted to stay and by his own admission the events of the Blackburn game rejuvenated him and this win which saw Birmingham make a swift return to the Premier League plus his daughter gave birth to her first child thus becoming a Grandad for the first time made it a day to remember for David Gold and Birmingham
