Hi Dr Vikram, I'm based in Australia and am interested in getting a scalp biopsy to measure scalp DHT. I've been using topical dutasteride that has been compounded. Whilst serum tests have shown it doesn't go systemic would really like to see what/if any effect it has on the scalp. Can you point me in the right direction?
Started taking creatine aged 18, have taken it consistently for almost 10 years (I’m 27 in 3 months time). I am genetically predisposed to mpb and have in the last 1-2 years began to show some thinning of the crown and temples. I would anecdotally say that creatine has had very little to do with this. My mpb genes are the culprit.

Absolutely great video. Highly insightful and informative. Really appreciate it. Thanks! 🙏
Thanks for this. Forums and other discussion boards usually suggest 'yes' or 'not sure'. I can trust a doctor way more than random people whose diet is Gatorade and power bars. The good an bad thing about my hair situation is that it's super thick and grows like a weed so I have doubts I'll be thinning. According to my mother, my bio father (and grandfather) still retain(ed) a full head of hair, just started to salt n' pepper around mid-30s which will be me in a few years. Five grams of creatine is all anyone needs per day.
No need to 'load' like the directions say. Just take it daily whenever or an hour before weightlifting.
Exactly loading is bs unless you are competing with other people in gym for money lmao
What about taking creatine and finasteride who have the gene for hair loss ? How much would the Dht go up ? Or would finasteride wouldn’t let the dht go up even if you are taking creatine?
Does anyone know if this all applies to women as well? I know we have lower levels of DHT than men to begin with, so do we even need to worry about any of this when it comes to working out or taking creatine?

Great video! A recurring theme I noticed in your videos is this "gene for hair loss". What gene exactly? As far as I know hair loss is influenced by the number of 5AR enzyme activity in your scalp/hair and your hair follicles' sensitivity to dht or the number of androgen receptors. Is that what you mean with genetic, or is there more to it?

will finasteride completely negate the effects of creatine on DHT levels?
For anyone interested. I’m planning on doing an experiment on myself to test if I experienced hair loss while taking creatine monohydrate, so here’s the set up. I’ve currently been taking creatine monohydrate for around 3 months, but I think I may have thinned my hair just a bit, but I can’t really tell. So I plan on stopping creatine supplementation for around 2-3 months, and seeing if my hair gets thicker or if I was freaking myself out. After the 3 month period I plan on taking creatine HCl for a bit a see if the thinning still persists. Also gonna be tracking if I lose any strength or size
Edit: I’ve been posting responses but CZcams is deleting them idk. Anyways I used creatine hcl for about a month with nizoral shampoo, which is theorized to be a topical anti-androgen. It’s hard for me to tell tbh. On the one hand sometimes I feel like I’m losing density, but sometimes I think I’m just in my head. Will continue for now. Maybe I’ll get a hair catcher in my shower to see for sure
Thanks mate I also want to take creatine, but I also have MPB problem for the past 3 years, I have am applying minoxidil and finasteride from the past 3 years and also gotten a hair transplant since I got a lot of thinning, so I am afraid to take creatine supplement or not , well I am talking finasteride which reduces DHT and avoid balding but I am afraid after taking creatine the thinning will start again.

Hello doctor can i take finasteride and creatine so that I could hold my hair and build muscle. Please help and explain
The main take away is that yes it will speed your hair loss if you have the gene for male pattern baldness. Even working out increases DHT so that will speed it up too. Also eating animal products that contain creatine will speed it up. So many factors.
The people saying they haven’t had no hair loss are the ones with good hair genes. If your family got bald patches and receding hairlines you have a high chance that you will also get that as well. Creatine just causes increased DHT and what that means for your body depends on your genes. There has been no study relating creatine to hair loss, but there are studies that do relate it to increased DHT.
This guy gets it.
What bugs me is that people defend creatine by saying “well it’s your genetics so you were gonna lose it later anyway”
If that is the case, to me..having hair for 20 years is far better than 15. It makes a difference and gives you more time to respond to balding with medication or surgery.
All meat has creatine lol and yeah the hair loss thing is a myth. I agree with you
It’s all genetics
@@JamesTaylor-cl4pq The amount of creatine in meat is microscopic in comparison to what you get from one scoop of the actual supplement.
That’s like saying you can breathe underwater because water has some oxygen.
Excellent explanation. Thanks!
So I'm pretty sure I have the gene, but since I'm sick and tired of being weak and out of shape, I'm going to continue lifting weights to get back closer to the level of strength I used to have...and I may as well take the creatine to help out. 💪
And are u bald now?
@Zoltan Zoltan No just pretty thin on top. Actually, i've decided to hold off on the Creatine since i'm making pretty decent gains without taking anything.
@@ziggyz2958 have you ever considered trying keeps? I’ve been thinking about it but haven’t decided yet
@@ziggyz2958 At the end of the day creatine is just a tool to get to your goals a smidge faster, where you can get to your goals without creatine anyway.
if i take supplement like whey creatin that time iam also taking finasteride thats any problem
so if u have genes for male pattern baldness then creatine should be avoided as it may speed up hair loss?
I don't get this. I'm working out regardless of my using creatine or whey so why is it that some people claim that these products cause hairloss? They don't increase testosterone themselves. The Doctor seems to imply that a more muscular body has more testosterone: is that the case? according to this view, everything that makes you more muscular can potentially worsen your hair loss, but we know of anabolic substances that don't seem to do that.
They do claim that because creatine will increase your body recomposition thus increasing your testosterone quicker when you're working out, then they associate the use of creatine to the hair loss
As already said there can be made a like between the two things but they aren't really connected
i just got back from a Hair Removal website with specialised dermatologist. And they suggest hair growth is due to high testosterone while in the video it is telling you the exact opposite. Who is lying?
Creatine doesn’t cause hair loss, Creatine affects the hormone that causes hair loss. So technically, it does.If you have a family history of baldness/thin hair, chances are you’ve already seen those signs before taking Creatine. Creatine just accelerates it. Obviously not everyone reacts the same.
so basically it do yall need to keep it real
Yep. Even finasteride isn’t enough to stop it.
Interesting fact: Did you know that a steak typically contains 5-7 grams of creatine? I'm curious, are you a vegetarian or do you enjoy eating meat? :D :D :D
Accelerates it by 200mph
So basically what you’re saying is eating red meat and exercising will also “affect the hormone that causes hair loss”. So in other words, based off of what you’ve just said, eating red meat and exercising will accelerate hair loss?
Very informative! A question: does Toppik contain creatine?

Doesn’t creatine specifically increase dht? So taking it would increase more hair loss than just working out alone. It would probably even increase hair loss if you aren’t working out and taking creatine because of dht effects
How much creatine in grams causes a DHT increase? If I lick a spoon of creatine is my dht going to rise to incredible numbers? No. Creatine is naturally found in meat so people have been eating this stuff for years. Obviously it’s hard to get the recommended dose of 5 G through food alone, but nobody knows if 5 grams is even enough to increase the dht. The only study that was done was at 25 grams. That’s 5x the amount.
@@AZ-gs6hj wasn' that just the loading phase though. Im sure they had the loading phase of 7 days of 25 grams then 14 days of 5 grams and they saw increase in dht
@@eugeneku3239 Well yes, but the study mentions that DHT increased 56% in that 7 day loading period. So the majority of the DHT increase was from the loading. It’s not even necessary to load creatine. Then it mentions that it remained at 40% which shows that DHT decreased when they consumed less. It may have continued to drop if the study was extended too. We don’t know what DHT levels will be if someone just takes the 5 grams a day instead of taking megadoses of creatine. 25 grams is absurd amounts of creatine. For a normal athlete consuming a diet with plenty of fish and red meat they may get 1-2 grams of creatine a day. So 5 grams is a not that much of an increase, but 25 is a very high amount. It’s still a very unstudied subject. I avoided creatine due to the hair loss claim, but I’ve taken the plunge and will finish whatever I have left and see if it even does anything for my performance.
@@AZ-gs6hj so if i took creatine once a week would i be good
@@not8278 could be. It also could be too little to even do anything.
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't all androgens cause hairloss? Cause theretically if dutasteride inhibits 90-99% of DHT then spiking testosterone shouldn't matter if you're blocking the testosterone from converting to DHT.

I find this a weird answer. Nobody is asking if it CAUSES hair loss, they're asking if it speeds it up. People who haven't lost any hair generally aren't worrying about hair loss lol, it's people who have the gene by default. No reference to scientific evidence at all in this video to actually explain where the idea that creatine causes hair loss comes from. This is literally just your opinion dude.

Buy a Dermapen or a Derminator 2 and do microneedling with 1.5 mm neddles on the affected areas once per week while continuing with your regime. This should really help. If not not, you should really think about getting a hair transplant or shaving it off and accepting your condition.
I experience a bid shed on Minox/Fin every 6-9 months and then it grows back thicker. I assume this is just the hair cycle.
Haven't tried finasteride but I am on minoxidil. Saw a lot of hair growth like you did for some time but at some point it stops working as well and your hair will be irreparable thin.
I finally made the decision to keep a close shaved buzz cut and still use minoxidil just to help a little. Best decision of my life. Lost all the stress about my hair and people have told me that it's a good look. I would seriously consider it if I were you.
The key is getting rid of DHT from scalp but keeping it in the body in order for beard/penis gains

How about we take creatine along with finasteride ?
Great video, but the real question was not if creatine CAUSES hairloss, rather does it directly increases DHT and because of that, cause problems only for people that have the specific gene. For example, I take finasteride and minoxidil because I know I have the gene, but I am still unsure if I should use creatine because it may "undo" the work that the finasteride is making.
Creatine won't "undo" what finasteride does. Finasteride is believed to lower your dht levels by 50/70% (at least that's what I remember). But only around 10% of your testosterone is converted to DHT. So even if your testosterone goes slightly up because you're working out it won't be as strong as the impact of finasteride.
yeah, too bad the doctor missed the mark on this. We don't want to know if whey and creatine cause hairloss, we want to know if they worsen it. Also, I am still unsure as to why, according to him, being more muscular means having more testosterone. Is that always the case? According to this view whey and creatine are simply substances that make your body more muscular, but e know that there are several hormones that do the same without worsening your hair loss.
@Emanuel Pereira the increase was from loading. It decreased after
I've already tested using Finasteride with Minoxidil and creatine... Hair keeps falling out... for those who have a strong baldness gene I think it's no use
What about creatine in the blood vs creatine in tissue. How do u know creatine will affect the hair follicles specifically?
Let me just say that creatine did cause my hair to fall out. I started taking nuclear creatine for 3 months and boy was I ripped…. What is the gene and where can I get tested for it?
I found a way around this. I have the gene for hair loss but I’ve been using finasteride which is a pill that stops testosterone from converting to DHT by a large percentage. It has greatly reduced my hair loss even though I actively work out and take supplements like protein and ashwagandha. After watching this video I think I’ll be adding creatine to that list as well.
I’m scared to take finasteride because of the nasty side effects. Like a tank in libido
@@lancer717 in my case my libido is kinda same as usual. It could be because I’m 19 and my libido is at an all time high. @@lancer717 not everyone experience side effects. Talk to your dermatologist and if you do experience any then just stop taking it
@@lancer717 if you go in with the fear of getting a side effect you will get it. Just take it like a vitamin pill and never think about the side effects because you WILL give yourself a nocebo effect
I thought the same thing. In my experience, creatine completely cancels the effects of finasteride. I’ve been on for finasteride since 2018. Never had a massive shed or any further hair loss. Decided to take creatine(5g) about a month ago. Shedding like crazy.
So you didn't get the peer reviewed memo that creatine causes an over 50% increase in DHT itself - not testosterone via "increased muscle building," as you put it. Just to further emphasize this point, creatine also caused a decrease in the T to DHT ratio, which is why you got this question specifically about creatine and (I'm sure) less so about protein powders. Does this not affect the opinion stated here?
Thank you. Thought it was a much more direct effect. It makes sense that DHT might then help lead to further hypertrophy beyond just have greater capacity to put in greater reps at a heavy weight, but a slow and steady approach of our normal T/DHT will be far less dangerous
what study are you looking at? cuz I found one that says it has no effect on dht
Thank you ❤ Can I use creatine while using minoxidil?
if i do workout then also dht increases so you are suggesting me not to workout?
My stress related hair loss DOUBLED immediately after starting a creatine hair loss.
YES! It causes a radical uptick in shedding!
So many people have had this experience!
Yes, for me it was immediate hair loss and radical. I don't understand why people are saying it doesn't have an effect, It was PROFOUND!!
@@slobbernuckle I suspect that high levels of creatine supplementation may be turning off or on epigenetic pathways that increase hair loss in some who use it. The next step would be to find the pathway and reverse its effects.
Interesting fact: Did you know that a steak typically contains 5-7 grams of creatine? I'm curious, are you a vegetarian or do you enjoy eating meat? :D :D :D
@@chris5897 Theres a huge different between bound creatine and unbound in the same way that bound protein in meat doesnt cause insulin response and insulin resistance as does unbound protein powder in blended drinks that is instantly absorbed and broken down the same as simple carbohydrates.
Absorption rates are also different between unbound free creatine powder and creatine that is bound in meat.
There are processes during digestion that use the creatine in meat as soon as its free so little to none may make its way into the blood stream where it is free to bind with hair-related receptors to cause hair loss.

say im already taking finasteride, will this essentially cancel out?
i would like to know as well
For me i believe it did. I was on 0.5mg fin for 2 years and basically was a nw2. Went on pre workout supplement that had creatine in it, and 3 months in i was shedding like mad. About 60 hairs a day and crazy itching. Complete diffuse thinning and lost almost 40% of my density. Took about 5 months off it to recover to 75% back. Still not 100% recovered yet. I may have been taking to much creatine because my whey protein isolate had creatine in it too. Now im off that too
@@thejokerwearspink8203 well u were on half the recommended dose. So I’m wondering if I start taking creatine and I’m currently on finasteride. Should I be concerned?
@@Diamondlight04 The only way to know is if you try it, i have no clue how you will react. For me it wasn't worth it.
@@thejokerwearspink8203 Had a very similar situation as you described. I was also working out, 4 days a week. Creatine was in both my pre / post. Noticed I was losing hair much faster during that period. I than reduced my creatine supplementation by switching to pure brands and started taking finastride. After 6 months, I noticed a huge improvement in my hair. Substantially less hairloss. Stability was the primary win here. I than switched back to a higher creatine dosage (mainly because I wanted to finish taking the sup's I bought previously) and noticed that the finastride was actually stabilizing my hair even with the increased creatine intake. So overall, I do believe creatine does increase hairloss. Finastride must also be taken for months prior before getting back into taking it. IMHO
What if someone has had a transplant around 6months back and is on finasteride, wants to use creatine... Will it still cause the damage to the hair follicle indirectly as it does without finasteride???
What about taking cordyceps? Would it contribute to hair loss? What about being over exposed to high levels of EMFs or EMR? WiFi and 5G mmw?
So its my Muscle growth which is also contributing to my baldness?
That's it. Go big and go Bald is the moto from now on
Started taking creatine a week ago and after seeing it is very likely to cause hair loss, never taking it again! Glad I found this out and see people’s comments from first hand experience
On the same boat, started taking creatine from yesterday and since I have mpb in my genes I’m going to stay clear of creatine.
@@DanishKhan-lw2srdid your hair grew back?
@@kum4jhe I just used it for one day so I didn't suffer from any hair loss.

I am 42 years old. My hair has been thinning and my hairline receding at a slow constant rate for years now. But I started taking creatine and I noticed a difference in just one month, thinner hair, more receding hairline. Is this a coincidence? I had read about this being a myth, but for the doubts I suspended my creatine intake.
what about raw whey protein without taking any creatine ? Does that also will stimulate the hairloss. As I'm already taking 1 mg fin per day from last 4 months, didn't see any significant improvement. Does taking raw whey protein will diminish my results. That's so heart breaking cause workout and body building is what I really love and whey protein is needed for that. Do I need to choose between muscles and hairs now. That's so much of injustice. What's a man without testosterone?😭 That's so heart breaking......
There's a lot of improvement in my hair. I have been using reactivaate serum of liittllextraa for 4 months. It has become routine. Specially, so little hair fall which you can't even consider. Furthermore, my hair has now grown longer with new hair growth and volume has specially increased. I am very excited with the results.
"Does Creatine cause hair loss?"
Vikram: "No, but actually yes, but no. So to wrap it up, yes"
When I was 17 I started to have a receding hairline and use to get made fun of for it but now I look at some of the people who use to make fun of me and there are completely bald lol I'm alittle thin but I still have a full head of hair and I been using cretene for about 2 weeks now I feel strong I feel like I dont want to sit down I have also been prescribed xanax for about 10 years now I am 28 as of april 14 2022 and baldness does run in my dads side of the family I believe Gene's do effect hair loss or just hair in general one of my main beliefs is stress is a key factor to hair loss emotional damage and just constantly thinking bad thoughts can effect your hair and worrying about hair loss also effects it cause your stressing about it my xanax makes me just go with the flow I have so many problems that it's hard to make it through the day sometimes I want to just give up quit both my jobs and curl up in a ball but I just cant I cant let myself fail like that I did for years but I know I was ment to do something great in this life and I continue to build even my relationship with my girlfriend stresses me out sometimes I literally just walk away from her and go on a walk because I just dont need to deal with things that can stress me out my point is try to stay stress free work out make money and smile you wont worry so much if your busy oh and maybe look into minoxidil I use it and I think it work I'm not sure my girlfriend says it does but idk it's cheap and its proven to work for some people.
By reading your comment i came to know how people are struggling a lot with their lives. I am praying that you're doing fine with your life . Take care ❤️
So if i work out and have the gene for mpb, should i stop taking creatine to keep more of my hair?
In my understanding, not necessarily, you can enjoy both, you just need to take finasteride regularly.
He literally just said no. It's lifting weights in general, and therefore increasing muscle mass, that potentially increases Testosterone and therefore DHT.
@@brent.johnson though, there are anabolic substances that don't cause hair loss. So I don't see how can you make the equation more muscles = more hair loss (given the predisposition).
@@hanscastorp1945 did you watch the video?
@@Designer_Opine do you have any non-passive-aggressive reply?
I started taking creatine around 8 years ago when I was 35, along with starting to workout. I lost a lot of hair rapidly from having full head to almost going buzz cut as I was done. Not sure if it was the muscle gain, protein or creatine, or stress or something, or a combination. I started taking finasteride and stopped working out, and I have seen some improvement. I have a bit of a combover on the crown, but no one notices I have hair loss, which is pretty amazing when it was so bad at one stage.
@sandiegolivin u mean the elevated testosterone which in turn elevates DHT
Finesteride has a ton of side effects.
@@tikiortaka I haven't had any to speak of. I've had a girlfriend for past 4 years, and I have had a drop in libido, but that's what happens when you have a girlfriend :D
@sandiegolivin Increased DHT leads to MPB not testosterone itself.
So you're saying that it was bad (bald spots?) at once and after taking Finasteride and quitting working out causes hair to grow back or get thicker?
Very informative. Thank you.
Hello sir how to increase the hair volume and hair density
Myth busted..Once and forever. There cant be any more reasonable, simple, scientific and biological explanation than this one. Thanks for clarifying the clouds of doubts doc. Long live.😍😍
No smoke without fire. My son is in his early twenties, always had a mane. Started balding about two years ago at the same time as started taking creatine. ‘As i am aware of’ was a hastily mumbled proviso here.
Just because one guy on the internet makes a video saying it doesn't, isn't proof of a myth being busted. More investigation is needed.
@JN-wr9he haha I noticed that too. "That I am aware of"
Except we still don't know if Creatine raises DHT levels which is the crucial point.
the fact that these hair doctors themselves can't prevent their own hairloss indicates that it's waste of time to consult doctors for hairloss.
