I think one thing to keep in mind about many seemingly "weak" builds is that they are much less likely to be nerfed or banned when a patch comes. The reason scorpions have been around so long is because they are resistant to major meta changes, if you build super powerful and "win" the game to the point where you become oppressively dominant you're likely to get the banhammer sooner or later. If you want a really long term experience without to much upset you could do worse than playing a scorpion.

The Scorpions were heavily nerfed with the reduced available oxygen patch, and unfortunately Devs decided to nerf them once more by adding the Claw-venom counterbalance, meaning that in order to obtain more powerful venom they should give up claw size and strenght, even then, scorpions can take down builds hundreds or thousands of times their weight if they get a good hit, and the fact that they haven't evolved more sofisticated tools besides their constant nerfs shows how resilient and balanced they truly are, capable of survive the massive expansions and bans that the devs did, they may not be the best build right now but they are absolute masters at adapting with bare minimum changes.

I would put scorpions in C tier because, for the most part, it can avoid some of its bad match ups through its borrowing ability. Birds, snakes, and most lizards aren't able to follow it, and it's way easier to hit something with a stinger if you're both confided underground. And while underground, they aren't exactly finding you anyway.
Granted, this isn't perfect as staying near a borrow or underground limits your ability to find prey, and Meerkats, screws, and ants can either dig you up or follow you down anyway and are more then capable of dodging or taking a sting.
Overall, Scorpions are probably a bit better than you say, but they definitely could use some buffs or changes. One idea I thought would be cool if they improved their perception and precision and modified their stinger to where they can actually shoot venom much like a spitting cobra. Its viability might be questionable, but it would give them a range attack while also improving their match-up against vertebrates as they can now aim for the eyes or mouth to deliver their vemon rather than trying to peirce. Honestly, it might not be possible or viable, but it would be cool.

Agreed. Many of the scorpion's unfavorable matchups are against significantly higher weight classes, and while there have been builds that subvert this they're exceedingly difficult to optimize. Their only losing match-up in the arthropod meta is ants, which basically every arthropod has a losing match up against. Ants are easily S-tier, IMO, and this puts scorpions in A or B tier. The fact that only specialized MAMMALS and some birds, of all things, take them out is a testament to how OP scorpions are.

    • @Lizard1582
      @Lizard1582 Před 2 lety +13

I think C is too high. What you say about their spider matchup is true, but in a mid-tier meta so diverse, I think that single niche isn't enough. There isn't enough scorpion players in urban biomes for us to know how well their intimidation strategies work unlike spiders that scare off humans regardless of massive urban playerbase and small sizes. Personally, as a human with low resistance against spider intimidation, scorpions aren't nearly as effective in deterring me. Their appearance seems more spec'd into cool rather than creepy and scary. That being said, they seem very fun to play in the biomes they're usually played in; avoiding most matchups til you can find someone who can lose to your creative kill condition. Perhaps there is certain scorpions that can make it into C if their biome allows them to better avoid bad matchups, vice versa.

Humans are just so used to not feeling threatened by any non-human player, they vastly exaggerate their reaction to even the least amount of threat. The scorpion's ability to one hit KO is certainly scary, but virtually any strategy that's useful to fight and disable a scorpion, a human can put in action - precise attacks to grab and pinch the tail (human opposable thumbs are a wonderful precision tool), armour through tool use (thick, sturdy gloves would already suffice), not to mention outsmarting, outrunning, or simply crushing the scorpion under one's boot. Human-scorpion is actually a completely one sided match up, it's just that humans see a tiny chance of defeat instead of 100% certain victory and that's enough to make them freak out.

    • @andidinu1456

Thats kinda the thing with them , they have always been succesfull because they are not really specialised in any enviorment or playstyle
They can dig climb , run , wrestle , ambush , chase , they have solid armor but they are still quite fast , they can hold their own against much larger players than most insects and spiders , and the tail might not have high accuracy , but once the scorpion is grabbed , it’s sure to deliver a hit
Even as far as marchups , they are arguably the best fighters in their weightclass , and because they are hard to crush (to the point where they can’t fight), they have more time to land their own attacks
Sure , they can’t stand against animals that are specialised in hunting them , like mongoose , but thats a given
A chicken for example ,a pretty weak bird , is capable of defeating even top tier snakes like cobras ,
Honestly with solid matchups , great versatility , and a couple of exploitable weaknesess , i’d say the average scorpion is low A tier
The D tier would be the ones that have big claws , but short tails with weak venom ( the ones you see in almost all the clips seen in the video ),
The best , maybe low S tier would be the ones that go all out on the tail demage and armor , like fat tail scorpions , because the usual strategy of crushing the tail is less usefull , the speed and accuracy of tail strikes is greater ,because the claws are too weak to secure a grab , and the danger of being one Shot by the venom is great enough to scare off most creatures from challenging them in the first place

@@andidinu1456 I think despite the Scorpion's versatility, it fails at being a true generalist for one reason, Scorpions aren't omnivores. Even though they have some great match-ups, they never can out-class the ant, the ants don't have the claws, but they are omnivorous and social, and a lot of the best ones also have powerful stingers and venom. For this reason I don't think Scorpions could ever be S tier, if there was a more social and omnivorous Scorpion build that would be S tier. Keep in mind, S tier means not having terrible matchups against anything on your server. Until then, I think Scorpions sit around a B for their weight class.

@@andidinu1456 Not every class needs to win every matchup to be top tier, but to be top tier they need to be able to at least avoid or fend off bad matchups. A hyena's matchup against an Elephant isn't important to a Hyena's ranking because a hyena A) isn't ever hunted by an Elephant and B) Can still eat elephants after they die from other causes because Hyena's are scavengers. Hyena's matchup against Lions is bad not not as bad as you'd think.
Scorpion loses a LOT of the matchups that really matter for the scorpion's survival, even to classes that aren't dedicated purely to hunting scorpions such as lizards and birds. Ants do have a couple losing match-ups like Ant-Eaters, but outside of classes purely made to counter ants, most classes, even of a much higher weight class have bad matchups against ants. A scorpion has to get pretty lucky to beat anything slightly above it's weight class, and it loses to animals of a smaller weightclass such as ants. Scorpions in the current meta are B at max.

and in that regard , scorpions do about as well as most other arthropods against ants , scrambling away from the raid as fast as they can , and most often managing to escape unharmed . And even disregarding all that , a bad matchup againt a build in the server isn’t enough to disregard said build from the top tier
Again , the snake and bird example : even the most deadly , combat prepared snakes , have terrible matchups against just about every bird and small carnivore ( let alone builds specialised in hunting them like secretary birds , snake eagles, badgers, mongoose , etc) simply because the moveset of those builds happens to be the perfect counter for the snakes moveset , and most snakes aren’t even fast enough to run away
Even eusocial insects like ants have specialised predators like anteaters ,pangolins , sloth bears , echidnas, thorny devils ,etc
These builds are still S tier , because they overall have it much better than most other builds
Coming back to the scorpion , it’s not like they get exterminated constantly by ants , sure , every once in a while the ant raids might catch a scorpion ( they catch just about any sort of animal that can’t outrun them ..) but overall , they are a minor predator , and have little to no effect on the scorpion population
Oh also i almost forgot , you mentioned the scorpions lack of omnivory ,and that would be a problem indeed , but since they can go for such long periods without food , it’s not like they ever starve to death , even in deserts

The larvae usually try to lay low and go underground or in woods for a safer play style but still get eaten a lot. But the adults are incredibly successful.
Accept for those species that spend the majority of their life as juveniles and mainly breed as adults for some reason. But most would do well as adults.
Being able to fly while having solid armor is pretty incredible. You get both mobility and defense. Which means their defensive ability is incredibly powerful with armor and evasion. Though many doesn’t have a lot of attack abilities accept for the ones that specialize in this like tiger beetles.
The flightless oak darkling have better defense being resistant to the weight of a car crushing it but less mobility
Tiger beetles seems really good tho. High attack, solid armor, decent flight ability and the fastest run speed (I think among insects ) which allows immediate high agility, and a non vulnerable and actually aggressive carnivorous juveniles that act as ambush predators.
They do have low intelligence and worse sensory ability as sometimes they are unable to process their surroundings while running so they occasionally stop and low hp but that’s basically a given if you wanna play as an insect. Though some species have low stealth, many actually have increadible stealth too.
