Here's a fun story. In 10th grade biology, when we were dissecting frogs, my partner and I were trying to cut open our frog's stomach, but kept running into something inside, and were quite confused. Eventually, we managed to pull out an entire severed crawdad claw, which had likely killed the frog.

Former planktonic main here with a fun fact! You don't have to be microscopic to be plankton, you just have to be bad at swimming. (The word "plankton" even comes from the Greek word for "drift" or "wander.") For example, some jellies are considered plankton because - just like the tiny guys we usually think of as plankton - they can't swim against a current.
Planktonic gameplay is pretty fun, honestly. It can be RNG-heavy because you don't really control where you're going, but it's a seriously unique meta if you're used to playing nekton.

I think what makes crabs such a good build is that they are never bad. It doesn’t matter what the meta is, you can always crab. You can come back to the game after not playing for a decade, use the same exact build as you did before, and still be viable. Yeah, maybe it’ll be slightly better or slightly worse, but the fact that it’s _always_ viable is sort of insane. I think the only other builds like this are sharks and crocodiles, but those have significantly more skill required to play decently.

The Crayfish build deserves more credit. Though they may be incredibly weak in some aspects, this is simply because they are min-maxing. They have put all their stats into poison resistance, allowing them to survive places most other aquatic builds cannot. Some CF players simply dig incredibly deep burrows and only surface when it rains to collect supplies. A notable glitch utilized by some users allows for cloning of themselves without need of a mate, leading to server crashes and game bugs. Louisiana crayfish, signal crayfish and the marbled crayfish are particularly strong CF builds.

There are also small crabs that have moved away from aquatic and coastal biomes entirely by speccing into parental care and laying their eggs in notches in trees where puddles form. Again, still in the early stages, but certainly worth keeping an eye on.

A note about mantis shrimp builds. If you decide to run this build you’re going to need to pick a style of shrimp (spearer or boxer) and depending on what you pick you’ll essentially pigeonhole yourself into specific types of prey. For instance boxer mantis shrimps have to spend a considerable amount of time lining up the correct shot to crack shells, which is why they go for slower prey where as on the other side of things the spearer shrimp essentially walk around with a loaded crossbow and have to shoot from the hip the entire time at softer targets like small fish or other arthropods. Just some advice for players looking to tech into mantis shrimp builds

However, because of the depth in which they live, they have quite a few natural predators. Another thing to mention is that it's monstrous in size. The *only time* it is vulnerable is when it has just finished molting since its exoskeleton is in the process of hardening. That is why I would still say it's S-tier.

Then there's Viruses, which are the closest things to being alive without actually being alive. Viruses are often confused with the three microbe factions: Bacteria, Archaea, and Protozoa. Viruses are actually a bonus "faction" consisting of modernized versions of the game’s pre-alpha characters and their variants. You can unlock each core virus build by either becoming infected by that specific build and surviving or (if you are playing as a microbe) killing that specific build in combat. After unlocking the base virus character, you can upgrade and diversify into its many variants. My personal favorite virus build is the Bacteriophage, which I unlocked after winning a really tough duel against a T4 while playing as an E coli bacterium. Afterwards, it was actually really fun to play as an anti-disease, and I was able to farm tons of XP from defending my human host. A really crazy friend of mine spent countless hours of playtime as a chimp for the sole purpose of unlocking the Ebola virus, the deadliest virus build in the game. He actually died from it three times before finally surviving an infection and thus unlocking the build. Its signature ability to induce the Hemorrhagic Fever status effect is so overpowered and will ensure a KO if your victim doesn’t have any health buffs such as access to medicine.

6:10 A very cool thing with the pistol shrimp’s projectile is that the centre of those bubbles reach absolutely insane temperatures and pressures because of how the pressure waves ricochet in the cavity. It’s so impressive that it’s inspired some human players to test the mechanic themselves as an exploit for pulling off cold fusion!

You know, dataminers were recently able to determine that Hexapoda is actually nested *within* Crustacea, meaning insects are crustaceans. Thus, the crustacean playerbase is actually one of the most successful

This is true but kind of misleading. It's like saying whales are a type of fish because they evolved from tetrapods and tetrapods evolved from fish. It's true but phylogenetic trees aren't the end-all-be-all of taxonomy

We isopod mains took a few ques from the trilobite build plus we were one of the first classes to get the achievement land dweller.
Plus since we’re so plentiful it means we’re doing something right.

Plus, a lot of human mains(at least the ones that partner with reptile players) tend to also have isopods to round out the team comp. Sure, if you go down that route you kinda have to follow the whims of the human responsible for you, but hey, you've got a good supply of xp, are relatively safe, AND you can get some pretty neat skins

My favoured loadout for the Crab is called the 'Penny Pincher', where I upgrade mobility and durability and lose intelligence and damage output, Named after Mr. Krabs himself. I also like to ally with humans on the beach Biome, Their screenshot and reaction abilities are able to disorient players that try to battle me or my raid clan.

the meme is less that players will drop their class in favor of switching to crab; it's moreso that many builds end up investing in the same upgrades that the crab meta is built on.
