  • With four classes down we have four to go! Here we will focus on three of those four, carbonates, sulfates, and phosphates. These are the ones with polyatomic anions, which are oxyanions. We will also discuss mineraloids, which seem like minerals but aren't. Ever want to know what makes up limestone caves? Check this out!

    Great content, Professor Dave. Minerology is a long-standing hobby of mine, so I'm enjoying learning some of the harder science behind my rock collecting penchant.
    Also, at 5:30, I was looking away for a moment and thought you said, "Salacious ooze," which is something quite different... LOL! Anyway, that brought a rather unnerving picture to mind so I had to wind it back to realize what you actually said.

    Can't wait for the ecology series and for the upcoming silicates video. Please if you can top up this series by discussing also the molecular composition of the different types of soil and why are they so different in structure from rocks and are they considered minerals as well ?

    • @Unsensitive

      Soil would be interesting.
      It's essentially "very small rocks" produces from weathering and organic matter.
      Types of soil change based on the type, size, and composition ratio of the very small rocks and organic matter mixtures.

    Why do ions like CO3 form if there is no compound of carbon attached to 3 oxygens that needs two electrons that exists on its own not attached to any metal ions

    • @Alkis05
      @Alkis05 Před rokem

      I don't know if I understand your question, but I think what you are looking for is carbonic acid. It is H-O-C(=O)-O-H. The CO3 needs two hydrogen (+) to stabilize. Well, I guess you could say it is HCO3 that needs one H to stabilize. Anyway, carbonates are formed when carbonic acid (usually that exists in chemical equilibrium in water) reacts with metals.

    We need a video on carbon 14 in diamonds. I can't find any real science saying it was found. Every Creationists site says it was though.
    Is that true? What is the real story?

    • @alanthompson8515
      @alanthompson8515 Před rokem +1

      Hi . The Age of Rocks site has "RADIOCARBON EVIDENCE FOR THE ANTIQUITY OF THE EARTH" which I think covers this point. Short answer: Typical Creationist Misrepresentation aka Lying for Jesus.

    • @Alkis05
      @Alkis05 Před rokem +1

      What do you think? People he makes such claims are either relying on contaminated or fraudulent samples/measurements.
      In other words, just because you measure c-14 radiation in a diamond sample, doesn't mean it formed in less them 55 thousand years, that carbon dating is unreliable or anything like that.
      You need more than one data point to compete with tons of other data evidence. You don't go taking wild conclusions before you substantiate the validity of the evidence. If that had been done to the satisfaction of the scientific community, whoever made such discovery would possibly gain a noble or some great prize.
