My dad was able to spend so much time with us because he was in academia. I remember as a child my dad would be home at 4pm to make sure we were doing home work, he would shower us and make sure we were in PJs. Mum had a regular job. My dad was flexible enough to take us to doc, optical and pediatric appointments. As an adult I treasure my dad's presence. Of course my mum was avaliable but my African dad played a huge role in his kids lives and this was in the 90s. Thank God for his choice of work.

Dr. Ann, I love you! This video is you taking the words out of my mouth. Everyone keeps saying do a Phd and I keep saying why? I don't care about being called a Dr. I don't want to be called a Dr. I don't care about getting a PHD.

The Monday dread was a real thing for me. Just completed a 1yr internship program after medical school. I think i would prefer a more flexible work schedule with a comfortable pay for sure 💯💯 looking at doing an MSc and then phD in Molecular genetics and going into research and that’s why i’m here! I’m from Nigeria as well. Thank you for these videos. They’re super helpful 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    Hey Dr. Ann.
Thanks for the beautiful video. It's enlightening. Till forever, I will choose my time and flexibility over money, and that's why I look forward to going into academia.
But I'd like to enquire, if this time and flexibility come at a particular level of your career in academia, maybe when you already have a Ph.D. in your field, or does it comes in generally with academia?
I would also like to know if one can have such time and flexibility while pursuing a doctoral program - Like, is it flexible enough for a woman and nurse a child?

New sub here! Love your channel. I am currently working in tech and looking into PHD programs for the reasons you mentioned. I’m concerned when I become a mom I won’t have time as I work 10+ days M-F. Do you have any suggestions on people applying to PHD with only work experience but no research? I’ve heard getting a masters (in my case 2nd masters due to different field) is the best route.
Thank you for sharing your journey 💖

Your struggle in Academia is great and as a Ghanaian I am really inspired.
In 2011 I applied to Hampton University for Graduate Studies even after paying 35 US Dollars they did not want to accept me for the Degree.
10 years after Hampton University is still tough to get in,
Can you advice me about the Hampton University since you live in the United States of America.

Hello Dr.Ann, I’m a Nigerian looking to undergo a post graduate program in Canada.
I came across your insightful CZcams videos of how to structure CV’s and write statement of interest. I’ve been really unsure about these two document for many weeks, but after the videos, I had some illumination.
Can I humbly ask that you review these two documents for me after I have written them so I’m sure I’m on the right track please.
I will deeply appreciate this a lot if you accept.
I’ll wait on your kind response.

I already work in a Tech company dear Dr. Ann. I love the challenges, I love how we get to expand our ideas and deliver more... I love it here. For me really it's not the pay... I'm just passionate about what I do...
I love how deeply you broke it down as regards applying for a PhD or not. For me really... I think getting professional certificates after Master's degree in the areas of ones career path is best, going for seminars and fellowship etc. Helps too.
Thanks once again... You would have done well in Tech coz you have what it takes 🙂

I love being in control of my time, not someone bossing me around. This is because I love traveling and I have a goal of traveling to at least two-third of the countries of the world in my life time, so i can wake up one morning and decide to embark on a holiday without having to wait for permission. So If I have the opportunity in the academia, I will grab it.
Speaking of academia, am applying to a graduate program in a Canadian university, I don't know if you can spare some of your time to review my one page "statement of research interest" and my CV. I will be glad if you can help me on this.
Please if you can do this, drop your email so that I can forward to you.
    Thanks in anticipation...
