These are two question that constantly pop up in my head time and time again when the going goes tough with doing the PhD.
Doing the PhD is like an Ultra marathon with so many obstacles along the way, essentially a long rollercoaster ride. We all know what the end goal is but every individual has all different targets and check point of what they want to achieve at various time point. When the set targets are met the joy only last for a short time as the end goal still remains be achieved. But if those targets are not met it makes the motivation and drive towards the end goal very difficult. Essentially, running the race, hitting all those checkpoints is a massive achievement and sometimes we do that that for granted and we tend to always focus on the end goal rather than appreciate the progress that has been made along the way.
What I’m trying to say is that doing a PhD teaches you so much, and the journey itself is an achievement and there’s so many skills that are acquired along the way which may not seem like a lot but they are defiantly useful for navigating through life.

Love the realistic approach of the video. While a lot of us have struggled with the career objectives, tis rather important to establish your own personal goals/objectives. As someone who has spent over a decade in the tech industry, I know a future in academia is a no-no for me post PhD. Becoming a scientist of great impact requires one to apply his/her skills in industry. Also I have heard this from a lot of academics; publish or perish. The need to always establish theoretical breakthroughs in high by writing and writing. Hope to get into a PhD in the coming year (AI). Great video man!
