I was Nation Guard 6 years My MOS was wheel vehicle Mac. Spent the Remainder of my time a Unit being a Engineer on 45 Foot ST. it had a 200 HP
BUDA. What was your MOS. Asking because you always show interest in old Equipment
Trying to start things. Just wondering. If the Military Life came with you, with the stuff you Like to do know.
I’m retired USAF ..I worked motor pool for my first few years
Stay tuned
You should be proud Hank to have an old legend of a man like Wiley as a friend. I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with several men of his kind. They worked hard all their lives with the most archaic of equipment and used whatever they had available to keep it running. Truckers, loggers, heavy equipment operators etc: they all did it to keep those machines running cause it meant keeping food on the table. Their knowledge is amazing and they are a dieing breed. Wiley said that old grader was a knuckle buster, but the real knuckle busters were the men who ran them.
I hear ya!
Well you got a man that's look like a six cylinder
I've always found it amazing that heavy equipment can sit up for years or even decades and with a little love, will just crank right up. Being an auto mechanic it warms my heart to see that. 😃
Right on!
I used to work for a big mining company at a quarry and they had a large workshop. They had a lot of old equipment and they could bring back equipment from the dead when they needed it.
Hey. Hank & Wally. I Ran a Cat Grader in 77. It Had a Pony.motor With a Big crank thru the hood. It was a Knuckie Buster , Yes Indeedy !
Start or no start, you guys are still winners. Great job you two.
Thanks so much!
Always run the rack with a pair of vise grips, check for stuck injectors, make sure the shut down flap works, no water in the oil or the fuel, and have a piece of wood handy in case the engine takes off before you start a Jimmy that has been sitting for a few years. The 318 is the 8V71 in case Wally forgot. I got the chance to ride in a Brigadier cut down back in my DSNY days. I would restore one if I could. I enjoyed the video and Wally's wisdom. Keep them coming.
Hey Hank. How boutch ya. Anywho. My wife watched your channel a couple of years ago. You helped make her last days a bit more comfortable. She passed away the day after thanks giving in 2020. Thanks Hank. Wes.
Sorry to hear that. Prayers that you have nothing but great memories of your time with her
@@HamiltonvilleFarm I do have grate memories of her. I'm glad that the lord gave me the time that I had with her.
You two "old buggers" are living proof of the fact that you don't have to roll over and die when you get to a certain age-----there's still loads of fun to be had !!!! Thanks for sharing and best regards from an "old bugger" in Ireland.
cheers!
My uncle had one of these years ago, I actually operated it . They earned the nickname "knuckle busters" for a good reason.
You two are a joy and a blessing to watch. Very entertaining as well. Thank you for your channel.
Thanks much!
I spent many an hour on one of those old mechanical motor graders plowing snow in NH back in the early 70's. When it's 15 or 20 below zero and there's no heat in the cab it becomes a painful matter when you engage those gear boxes to lift the blade or rotate it. Great design, but they could have refined the gearboxes just a bit more. I never had a cat that had a electric starter motor on it (and I had 4).. No matter how cold it got you could always start that pony motor and spin the diesel in with no compression. If things got real desperate (negative 20 to 40 below) you could always build a camp fire under the pan and they'd start like it was a summer day.
👍
Engine in grader is Cat D318. As long as exhaust is covered you could let it sit for 20 or 30 years and would probably run no problem. The first lever you moved for pony was compression release. With pony or electric start you can start it spinning with decompression and once spinning good give compression and a whiff of ether and usually will pop right off.
I can’t believe you made one-eyed Wiley disappear 😂 Great work gents!
Lol
Hi guys not sure if you can help but diesel creak is in need of some wheels for an old grader you you might be able to help him out. It’s so good to see your all well and doing some great things in getting this old machines to run and move.
What a beauty get her painted up and restored.
Can't believe you let ol Wiley crawl under that GMC and try to catch himself on fire! Love you two together!
lol. He’s stubborn!
i really enjoy old piece of equipment like that come to life!
nothing beats that!
was build to last! 💪
When Wiley started to move that Cat 12 I imagined him saying something like "you want anything from McDonald's while I'm in the drive through?"
💥 Neat to see the mechanical geared grader before they were made with hydraulic controls. Fun creative editing at the end!
*Keep on tractoring!*
Lol. Thanks buddy
Ok hank! Acting like we didn't see u just casually pulled ur tool box ladder out!
I'm digging it. I was a little skeptical at first, but since i've been using it, its been awesome
Love a grader video! Great to see it all working on shafts and gear drives.
That grader is just what you need for your farm trials Hank…good job you guys!!
For sure!
Hey guys I love watching you too I'm disabled vet and I can't get out of this bed but watching you two guys Clowning Around really makes my heart feel good so keep up the good work man please
Thanks for your service!
Cat 12 Grader for sale ready to grade just needs a little TLC , and on the 6V92 you know Scott was having a stroke yelling at the screen, bar it over first and check for struck injectors LOL
LOL. I know!
Hank you need to take the grader home for your driveway and roads. Since Gina bought a greenhouse you should get a grader lol
agreed
That old grader just needs a couple tires and a bit of TLC and it looks like it'd go back to work for a day for somebody. After Wiley's comment about not being a grader operator i'd say he couldn't be any worse than the municipal operators we have round here. They go to work like every days their first ,and some of them have been doing the job years. They swear blind the washboard in the gravel roads the traffic causing it, but it's kinda funny the washboard runs at an angle across the road that matches the angle of the blade L.O.L. Thanks for the video, Take care guys.
Lol
Приятно смотреть на вашу работу, молодцы!!! Удачи вам и здоровья!!!
I do love old Caterpillar products.
So much so I recently joined a local Australian chapter of the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club and hope to eventually locate and own an old Cat 35 crawler.
Just a note for you Hank on those old cat graders there's two pedals for the throttle the forward part and bigger bar is to throttle up the smaller part is behind by your heel that is to use to kill the engine it goes back to the injector pump and cuts off the fuel. So you don't have to choke it down in gear. And another note when you engage a blade lever you push it hard and it'll shake a bit if the lever case is low on gear oil or worn gears but you force it it doesn't kick as hard. I ran one like it for year's. Lol that's a manager machine! 10 hours of beating your palms and knuckles you glad to be off it!! But if they are properly adjusted and the gear boxes are full of old they operate fairly smooth. But you baby the engagement of any levers and Bam you gonna get kickback. But that machine sounds and seems to look in fair shape. It be a good one to put a few dollars in and use on the farm. Parts are a little bit hard to find im sure it's around 1947 or so model. You can know by the tag on the engine or look for a tag up on the front of the frame either by the gearbox to lean the wheels on right side or on left side I don't remember what side but there should be a tag up there also. . Better luck next time not all Detroits crank. But I bet you put a good starter on it a try again it might suprise you. Maybe too that grader beside the cat with a cab be a victim of the Will It Start gang!! Bests of all to you guys enjoy the videos.
Thank you buddy!
Heck guys, you already started a fire an put it out okay so try adding one or two more batteries like 36 volts since it liked twenty four it should maybe just possibly do it with more juicy fruit hanging from the cables... that or just melt the jumpers... tell harbor frieght that it had a really strong diode in the wires... you know, a country boy fib
Lol. Good idea!
I can’t believe that it can sit for years and fire up with the fuel that has been sitting there for that long!
Another good video. Hope you feel better soon, Wiley
He’s milking it 😂😂
@@HamiltonvilleFarm probably has a cute nurse checking up on him
Lol
"This is not a competition" 😂 Thanks for the video
Looks like a old 12 F knuckle buster,I learned on one of when I started back in 87 now I'm 49 and the new graders I run are 12 M joystick controlled doesn't even have a steering wheel in it,comes with am/fm CD radio back up cameras, GPS ready a long way from those old days but honestly Those old ones will out work the new ones
i heard that!
@@HamiltonvilleFarm I enjoy these videos you make I like the old iron people back then took pride in their work
I love the old grader. You need that too! Full watch.
Thanks buddy!
Great video. Kept seeing that grader parked next to this one with a full size cab - hoping that one gets fired up too!
Stay tuned
Right about 24:40 when y'all were like lots of old timers look at this and know what it is. Yes u are right. I'm not even 20 yet and I knew it was an old car 12. My grandpa's got one. That's actually the piece of equipment I learned how a pony motor works.
That is a great project for you to restore Hank!🙂
Hank thank you for your service brother
Our pleasure
Now that was awesome. That grader is almost ready to go to work.
For sure!
That is a Cat no 12 grader made in the 1940/50's. It looks to have been modernised with the electric start and the hydraulic side shift on the mouldboard. Those old things are capable of a lot of hard work. Don't ease any of the controls into engagement. Keep a firm grip on the levers and and slam them in. When the dog clutches get worn they kick hard. If you don't hold those levers tightly, you can injure your wrist. It's good to see those old machines working but they can't keep up with modern ones but are still good for farm work.
It is easier to turn them by leaning the front wheels into the direction that you want to go. To stop the engine, pull up on the throttle pedal.
Love them old Cats! Got one myself. 👍
right on!
That motor grader looks very much in need of tender love and care and maybe some tires too !
lol yep
I used to live half the way from Hawaii to Japan - and the Coast Guard visited every 6 months. Bringing 3 or 4 ships and doing exercises and getting to us replacing the Loran station men. I lived on Kwajalein Mid Pacific Fueling and the Coast Guards were 30 miles North of us on the Atoll. I believe Loran is gone since GPS replaced it. Stars are the backups.
Ha Hank first blade I ever ran was just like that one hard starting old girl, parked it on a slight incline with the blade up and pulled it to start Cat 12 straight frame a real knuckle buster
love it when you 2 make a plan come together
Right on!
Awesome video Hank, that old Cat grader fired right up and sounds great! Too bad about the Detroit, I'm sure if you got it spinning over it would've started, them old Detroits never die!
Yeah, we may revisit it
Another piece of equipment ready to be put back to work. Nice job guys.
Thanks much!
I was on the edge of my seat thinking about that Detroit going rogue with one or more runaway injectors if it started!
You guys just have too much fun!😊
I love them old GMC Brigadier sounded like you were having some audio issues easy fix though
Thats a great snow plow you have there
Please keep the stories coming!
I especially enjoyed the one about the guy sending a letter to his wife via the stewardess!
Yeah I thought that was cool too.
Enjoyed this video Hank with Wiley. That grader is definitely an oldie goldie. My English are terrible too. Lol.
Lol. Hoping your light show is going good!
@@HamiltonvilleFarm It is Hank. Thank you for asking.
Shes's alive!!!!!!!!💪
👍👍
So on the grader or any cat engine for that matter, that has been upgraded from pony motor will likely have glow plugs. The pony motor or engine as I call them wormed up main engines water as well as the intake from the exhaust of the pony engine. As for the Detroit, I didn’t see the fan blades moving. Couldn’t tell if the fan ub bearings was bad or the alternator or generator was frozen probably with bad bearings. None the less great video!
Cranking old detroits is one thing i will not do myself anymore i had one stick the fuel rack and it went to the moon lol ... It says a lot for the old cat grader to work they did build them well back then
yes sir!
Hank! You're a magician! Where did Wiley go?? 🤣🤣🤣 That was awesome, I had higher expectations for the truck than the grader. But that grader did good, flat tire and all! Good job fellas!! 👍 By the way, that truck said "not for hire", I know you might have wanted to use it as a taxi, but......🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOL
Sounds good 👍 and God bless yall
Cat going to start i like the new guy . Keep up the hard work be safe.🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
I've put a few hrs on one them graders. Been a lot yeas ago will say that. Fun one to watch. Them old cats. We're built to last.
You got that right!
My grandfather slapped me down one morning caught me spraying starting fluid in a dozer,From then on I took a rag soaked in gas and held it in front of the dust bowl,I don't want to admit that slap hurt but my grandfather was 7'5" and 350 lbs at 74 years old he looked like a bow flex commercial
I hear ya
Hey there, looks like Wally is loosing weight, are you working him too hard? You two make me smile and, on occasion, laugh. THANK YOU!!! Love the tool box with the built in ladder, where can I get one???
Thanks for watching!
Awesome job Hank and Wiley 1 out of two not bad thanks again for another awesome video
Thanks for watching buddy!
Thanks Hank! Really enjoyed that, got to love your partner✌️❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
I love watching you guys
we appreciate it
318 was the 6-71 Detroit but like Wylie said if it’s got a thimble full of oil it’ll be fine I’ve seen 16 cylinder Detroit’s run with 2 windows in the block and a broken connecting rod they dropped the oil pan and cut the rod where the big end was still on the crank and pulled the piston down to cover the intake ports
Hank, as long as you know where your crescent wrench is you got everything you need lol
That’s right!
Like the special effect at the end getting better producing..
Right on! Thanks
You and willey make a great team
Thanks!
It’s always exciting to watch you guys great 😊 video keep up the great 👍🏾 work
Thanks much
Very Nice.....congratulations.....
You Guy's are the best!
I drove one of these for a while, first rule - slam those levers, if you don't it'll bite you hard.
Good tip!
That was awesome Hank enjoy all your videos
Thanks!
Hi Hamiltonville Farm I notice that Military truck besides the other motor grader, I hope you do some videos about that someday, I enjoy watching you two working on some old iron shout out here watching from the Philippines ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for making my day.
Thanks for watching!
Meus amigos eu sou daqui do Brasil eu acompanho muito trabalho de você Vocês são uma equipe e incrível esse canal tá de parabéns
WOW Great Video. The GMC truck might need a third or fourth battery to start.
Thanks buddy!
That looks like an old caterpillar 12-8T motor grader. My family has one we use on our ranch in the nicer weather. There's an identifying tag with the serial number on the side of the engine block, you can see it at 6:39 in the video.
Cool. Thanks!
Too bad about the truck but y’all got the grader to live again!
Yes sir!
Hello guys since I started watching you you guys bring me out of the Soualem I just had to put my dog down and watching use with the funny attitudes you got me out of my Soualem thank you
You’re welcome, sorry bout your dog 😞
That looks like an old Winn Dixie truck you are trying to start.
Beauty Patrol ✨✨✨
Good job
Nice starting engine 😍💕🔥
Thanks Hank, I didn't see any hydraulic lines, much different than the last motor grader I saw you working on.
Central California Watching
Yeah. Makes it easier 👍
Yea man 2 cool mans👍💯
How is Tommy? I haven't seen him in any of your videos lately. You guys have way too much fun.
Tommy hunts ALL the time. lol. He'll pop up in another one soon. Thanks for asking.
Excellent video Hank :) also Wiley :) yes that Detroit motor in GMC truck starter needs replaced or rebuilt also grader of Cat motor purring like kitty for sure and 12 means lots selection to play with and surprises me that one drive wheel seen better days and still bump around too Lol!
Lol. Thanks for watching!
@@HamiltonvilleFarm welcome
Cool!!! Square Wheels
love it
In watching this video I noticed Wiley had a green band on his wrist. I compared that to the one I just took off and I believe that is the band that says you have a gas bubble in your eye. Can't fly etc. Wiley mentioned he had eye surgery, so with the green wrist band I would assume for retina detachment. I went through that procedure in mid October. Quick to heal if you follow doc's orders. Vison slowly returning to a workable level. Hank, thanks for your service brother! Former Marine myself. 87-93.
🤣🤣🤣, cool video. I'm glad I didn't have my earphones in for this one 😳. Hank that grader would solve all your driveway issues. What happened to the old gallion anyways, after you left it at Tommy's?
It’s a knuckle buster because it’s gears instead of hydraulics that move the blade in all directions.
Hank you need one of them fluffy brushes then wipe them cobwebs away for better viewing lol
Nigel
Old stoker retired
Royal Navy
you guys are good God Bless
Thanks Cecil!
The gearbox is 4 speed ,plus high and low range The outer lever is the one to use to change the ranges
Hey hank I would love to see that other grader and that military 5 ton get started
Stay tuned
Everyone: talking about starting the grater
Me: WHAT ABOUT THE FLAT TIRE ON THE MIDDLE RIGHT.
Hank you and while due a he'll of a job even when the grader starts and truck don't he'll of a job thank you for sharing and your time great.
