Good analysis & comments on the flaws & weaknesses in the script. However please do note that all movies of SLB are over glamourised focused on sets, costumes, glamour and not on maintaining the historical truth of the story or the times it relates to, only 'Heera Mandi'. Devdas too was over glamorised whereas in the classic novel and the in Dilip Kumar Devdas 'Paru' and where she lived is simple and not affluent & glamorous. SLB movies /series are fictional and not based on facts. Please do bear this in mind. At least SLB series has opened up the subject of 'heera mandi' for discussion and debate!

OMG you hit all the right points!! story mein sach mein bilkul bhi time nahi spend kiya, I could barely keep my head up, I was falling asleep! Alamzeb ka character did not make any sense to me and end ke episodes mein toh I was watching it all on 2.0x speed! Like alamzeb ka character represents young love and passion along with the star crossed lovers trope, but na hi mujhe pyaar dikha and no passion; I didn't care about their love! Side characters mein Indresh Malik as Ustaad really did steal the show for me! I was way more into that character than anyone else haha

Watching this from India. I get your points, quite fair. Especially lack of Punjabi flavour in a series set in Lahore and the weird first meet of Alamzeb and Tajdar. However, i hope you understand this is what SLB’s world is like. Movies like Bajirao Mastani or Padmaavat even though made on historical characters were beautiful visual and musical spectacles and a cinematic experience rather than knowledge imparting. Look at it that way and it’ll make sense.

Although it is a movie where people don't notice these small things but those who belong to that history and culture can notice these very easily and obviously it doesn't give them 100% satisfaction of the movie. Really where we are spending so much details on sets, we should invest more money on focusing actual details and story. Thanks for sharing authentic info from authentic people who belong to that historical place and felt that cultural from their own senses. Love from India 🇮🇳 ❤😊

You are absolutely correct in your review. Another thing I noticed was that these were dancing courtesans, but there was really not a single actress who knew or performed actual classical kathak. As an Indian, but who watches Pakistani shows all the time. Even I could tell that this is not the verse that is read by muslims when somebody dies. And as a punjabi, I can tell you that the murder that was made of the punjabi hindi mixture that the help of the house spoke is beyond pathetic.

I don't think its a fair critic. Series says its a fiction and they do idea is for audience to get into Bhansali's fictional world, not expecting historical accuracies or chronology. I guess for pakistani folks, they are too close to the heeramandi as a place to be completely fair. Only issue I see is screenplay and that was never Bhansali's forte.

This is a master piece and a gripping web series but from an Indian perspective. Understand that you are concerned with detailing of some Urdu words that Bhansali should have taken care of but from an Indian perspective no body cares as not many people understands Urdu script. Very good review, the series is a very good production as for as set designing, costumes, acting and partly music is concerned but fiction has its flaws as described in this clip. In set design also one can pinpoint the ideas taken from Bhansali Jee’s previous movies. Despite all these shortcomings it’s worth a watch and might bring people of two neighbouring countries closer.

Aditi rao's character in the show is muslim, so kuch "Kabul karne " ki baat hi nahi hai, secondly this show is based in undivided India so is talking about india's independence, the freedom struggle in Lahore was never isolated in Pakistani land it was connected with networks across undivided India,so the date is justified from india's point of view because it was to free India out of British ,not have a breakaway muslim land

Hi, very fair and valid comments. A lot of focus given to sets, costumes, glamour but not enough on historical facts. If making a movie on a historical true matter, it should be important to present the facts, the culture the language etc accurately. There is lack of detail on these as you mention. SLB should have done more research or taken contribution on these from a Pakistani person. Though it may seem u r critical as u r from Pakistan, but points u make i find them valid & fair though I am an indian. Good analysis!

Saw all the 8 episodes of Heeramandi in 1 go. It was necessary because I feared if I watched it in bits, I might lose some link.
I write these few lines immediately after watching the series.
Bhansali gave too much importance to the look / get up. The soul is missing. Full marks to the Set Designer, though in creating an ambience of Shahi Mohalla (Heera Mandi).. Dargah designed like a Gurdwara.. very Punjabi architecture.. and all.
I am afraid, Bhansali went 2 centuries back, mentally.. He got into "Mah-laqa Chanda Bai".. fast forward by 1 century+ to "Malkajaan", "Gowhar jaan".. and came close to the 1930s - 1940s. He kept the timeliness fluid. That was his undoing. From Buggies to Convertibles.. Timeline got messed up.
Manisha Koirala as "Malkajaan" (not Mallika Jaan) shines thru-out.
Alamzeb (Sehgal) couldn't act., and her voice culture was masculine and jarring. Someone should have dubbed for her !
Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Taha Shah, Adhyayan Suman, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman.. all performed well.
The character of Koch-waan Iqbal and Saima were unnecessary and a drag. The 2 maids (Satto - Phatto) were just about ok.
Music is forced. A Rasoolan Bai thumri "Phool Gendwa na maro" didn't resonate. Nor did the classic "Rang Sari Gulabi Chunariya Rey". There were some classics played in the background, yet failed to register on the mind. Not 1 original Ghazal.. a song .. that one took away...hummed. Bhansali should have left the Music to a proper Music Director.
