- Pony Island comes from the creator of Inscrytion and seems like an innocent game on the surface. However beneath it's family friendly exterior a demonic entity resides and holds captive the souls of those who have fallen. In this video we take a look at the secret story behind Pony Island and it's protagonist in this episode of horror games explained.

There's one more thing you missed that suggests what Hopeless Soul's true identity is. If you go into the game files and change a 0 in a certain file to 1 or 2 then you'll get one more ending.
Wait what
So is hopeless soul the real lucifer?
@@strongfish92 I believe he specifically says that he sometimes like to talk in other people's voices, while using the hopeless soul's sound effect
Damn
How do you expect to help him if you don't even say the file?
What's wild to me is how there were hidden items in this game that wouldn't be used until things needed to be unlocked in Inscryption, years later. It makes me wonder, what kind of things are buried in Pony Island and Inscryption for the next Daniel Mullins game?
I'm sorry? What?
Daniel is really out here playing 7D chess, isn't he? What an inspiration
Don't dig too deep into that one. For the Inscyption ARG, Daniel's previous games, such as Sacrifices Must Be Made, were updated with the things needed to crack the code.
Don't forget "The Hex"! There's lots of things in that game that ties in to Pony Island and Inscryption (although more for the latter than the former).
@@tatianah.a9307 I think The Hex is the most lore-important Daniel Mullins game, but it's also the forgotten middle child.
you should totally play buddy simulator, it's got similar vibes to this game and a lot of underlying lore given in secret files like ddlc
That would be so fun to watch!!!
I never heard of that game...perfect!
Buddy simulator. Ahh yes. I played it, im still traumatized by that weird creature at the end.
Whats buddy sim?
Hah you just reminded me I stopped playing that game because it freaked me out. It was at the point where it tells you to exit so the buddy can update the game and when typing the exit command it interrupts you to say something. Something about how the game actively stopped me from quitting, even to say something so inconsequential, just unnerved me enough that I put off playing it until I just forgot about it. I'll pick it back up now and stop being a wimp
Maybe hoppeless soul was the developer of pony island and maybe he make a deal with the devil (¿to finish the game?), but the devil had other plans so the devil took over pony island to make it a form of torture for other souls.
Wow that makes sense.
Difficult to make a deal with yourself.
_Citation:_ Maka Johnson and other CZcamsrs show themselves changing something within the Save File DATA (“Do NOT change to 1”), triggering a devilish secret
good theory. it makes alot of sense and its possible
Ooh,i personally think that's better than hs being actually lucifer!😳

I don't think this is the knight who killed him. Not only does the man on the horse look white ((his killer was a man from the middle-east)), but he appears dressed in armor typical of European warriors. Perhaps this was his commanding officer, or a friend that looked down at him as he died? He doesn't look middle-eastern at all, and if you look at depictions of the crusaders enemies - the warriors of Saladin - they look very different, from the skin tone to the armor they wear and the style of facial hair. Food for thought.
Agreed. Since he was on horse back probably an officer.
I wish to point out something…
You are a Crusader, who died around 1250 (Seventh Crusade, 1248-52 Egypt)
You were trying to take back Jerusalem (First Crusade, 1096-99, Jerusalem)
You were killed by Abu Al-Kindi. He fought for his people. (Scholar, Philosopher, Musician. Died 873)
@@palecaptainwolfkayls8499 that's a fair point you brought up. He's a scholar, so he wouldn't look like a warrior of Saladin. That's a good observation. However, the man on the steed still appears of European descent and appears to be donned in European-like armor. I could be wrong - perhaps he managed to kill a crusader and don their armor + steal one of their horses? It seems out of the skill range of an philosopher and teacher though, as he was probably a citizen helping the military in a desperate last attempt to keep back the crusaders. Regardless, thanks for bringing that up
@@mackedee9065
I’m meaning to also imply, backed by the Save Data easter eggs,
Theodore the Crusader may not be real. Part of the elaborate ploy to free…someone.
Could he have been killed by another crusader. Crusader infighting was common. But since he was killed by one of the defenders, it could have been a mercy kill by a passing crusader? Dying on the battlefield and someone just made it quicker?
Something to add, a recent discovery of secret cutscenes through file editing show that Lucifer “speaks in many voices”, and when he tells you this fact he speaks in lost souls voice, it’s possible the entire game is a ploy by him to escape the game
7:08 "And the vision of the Knight, who killed him."
Wait, I thought it was someone else who killed him. Not a knight.
He was slain by Abu Al-Kindi.
If that sounds suspicious to you, it should, when you died (1250) to a Scholar and Philosopher who died roughly hundreds of years (873) before the First Crusade (1096-99)…
@@palecaptainwolfkayls8499 I mean, there’s probably move than one Abu Al-Kindi in history. He could have been killed by just some guy.
@@jaredarmstrong7403
Still, it’s kinda weird that the game demon indirectly says that the First and Seventh Crusade occurs at the same time
Couple that with conflicts between there being a copyright of “666” on the Arcade Machine with a 199X Copyright for Systemtech
It’s probably safe to assume that Al-Kindi is the one that Natas googled
Indie games sure love horror genres.
That's because creatively horror as a genre requires, not limited to, but requires the least amount of effort. The narrative doesn't even have to make sense. And as far as external research and fact checking horror relies on fear, fear requires ignorance. So you can flub quite a bit in horror and get away with it if you can unnerve your audience.
Horror is awesome, so why not
Also Mikey, Beelzebub is pronounced *"BEE-EL-ZEH-BUB".*
timestamp?
@@PRMYUAM I don't know how to do that. Trust me, he was pronouncing it *BEEZEL-BUB.* Sounds like the name you give the henchman of a Disney villain.
it sounds the same but ok
@@PRMYUAM 7:31, and he pronounces it Bees-el-bub instead of Bee-el-zeh-bub
I was hoping someone else said this so I didn’t have to feel like an a-hole for calling it out
I dont think Theodore is a "hacker" due to him existing before computers. More likely he was a cryptographer, or a lockpicker or both
Theodore was a crusader knight. Just a high-ranking soldier. Mike was talking of Hopeless Soul, the mysterious figure that helps Theodore. But he's wrong about his identity, there's an answer to that buried deep within the game (SPOILER: He's another identity of Lucifer tricking the player into releasing him).
Now all we need is an Inscryption story explained.
He still needs to play The Hex before he can properly make an Inscryption Explained video. All of this developer's games are connected.
I can’t wait to learn about the story of Pony Island explained.
Yeah me too

I was waiting for a theory video of Pony Island! Thank you, SHB!
Its rlly sweet how Mike took the time to delete pony Island for hopeless soul XD
Good job explaining the entire story of the game! I couldn’t figure out everything with the lore, on my own! Thank you for that!
This is actually just about 80% of the lore and it misses on the real twist about Hopeless Soul's identity.
During one of the secrets it turns out that Lucifer can mimic other voices like hopelesssoul which means when hopelesssoul is asking you to release his soul you are pretty much releasing the devil into the world
You should definitely try The Hex next, since its lore is deeply connected to both Pony Island and Inscryption.
Bro i just discovered your channel, and honestly seeing a big channel not only highlighting, but also explaining, this indie game, is awesome. This was my first 100% completed game. God it was hard without using any guides but it was so worth it.
And you'll get this I bet, but after getting 100%, I immediately uninstalled the game, and as much as I loved it, I don't think I'll ever install it again.
I'm so excited to hear about this! Keep up the AMAZING WORK Superhorrorbro!
The story with the protagonist's past is very similar to a dream I had. It's coincidence, though, because I have only heard of this game and that it's a glitchy meta-game. That and my dream was around 2002 and has stuck with me ever since. (Edit: Actually my namesake is from this dream.)
Oh HECC yeah! Been waiting for this video since I watched your playthrough of the game, super excited dude!!!
I really enjoy all the story explained videos you make cause their so informative and accurate to the story of the games so I was curious would you ever consider doing a story explained video on cooking companions???
FINALLY SOMEONES TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME AGAIN- it’s just incredibly cool!
These are the kind of puzzles I like, never got stuck there (except shortly with Azazel, until I realized I don't have to wait till the end of his turn if I'm moving an element)
thank you for making the explanation. i was waiting.
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
There is a name you are supposed to give to asmodeous Buer I think it was. That probably gives some more lore about the hopeless soul.
I remember playing this game YEARS ago in an Indie Games Exhibit. I'm bad at games but this lore is so good and I want to know more!
Thank you for this. I tried to watch a playthrough before, but all the code was confusing me. Now I can understand and enjoy it. :03
You were tricked. Hopeless soul was the real Satan. If you do some save file modifications, you can unlock interactions between various characters and the player.
LOVE UR VIDS KEEP UP UR GOOD WORK
Ayo good video! I have a request and I know your probably sick of me asking this but please play IB! This game is very interesting and has a unique story that a lot of people don't know about, this is the first game that introduced me to roleplaying horror games.
You should do The Hex next, it's just as meta and interesting as his other games.
It's not really horror though. It has a hidden story details though.
@@jardex2275 Certain parts are a bit horror, maybe enough? Even the nonc-creepy parts like super weasel still is creepy at certain points. Also the game goes into your steam friends that's pretty spooky.
"Bee-El-Ze-Bub" not "Beezle Bub" :) - awesome video, SHB! Always a fan of your work
The whole devil making a game to consume souls is a very intense thing. But this idea sounds more like Belphegor the sin of sloth.
Hopeless Soul: FINALLY!! Im FREEEEE!!!!
Great video btw I really enjoyed it : )
It's worth noting, you can actually ask three questions during a single playthrough, you just need to access the one who answers your questions in three separate sections. Early on in a warped Pony Island credits section after you find the password in the Advanced Options, then on the adventure map in the Cave of Truth, and I'm pretty sure the third is where the distorted flower is during the second "Puzzle Break", if you send a butterfly off screen to the right from there to get your third question.
When I saw that was uploaded I was like "Yaaaaay" lol. Pony Island is a great game 👍🏾
I was about to suggest this game to you as I loved this game
0:59 Systemtech or Satantech?
I think i just saw a video about “Pony Islands lost secret after 6 years” or something where the dev back in like 2020 actually went back and added a new final Easter egg to live up to the hype that he made on the steam forums or something
I waiting for this

Love your attempts at pronouncing the names of the various devil cores 😂😂
I kind of remembered that lucifer is a fallen angel with asmodeus being the king the lust... I just find it weird that he looks very different from what i imagined
It's fun to rewatch vids when its one of these
Yes! I've been waiting for this!!
Ive been waiting for this for literal months... hopefully i can clear some doubts from the video.
hopeless soul might be Lionel, a character that has died in the hex (another game made by daniel) it seems like the games are connected, Lionel does harbour the skills that would be required to hack.
I’ve loved theses pony island videos
So cool!! I'm totally interested in seeing if you'll play Daniel Mullins' other game, The Hex!!
random thing as someone who never played
but the mental image of the devil himself sitting infront of a computer (probably old as heck) and trying to program a game is
gold
pure gold
Was waiting for this
okay at the start of the video the "i am error" character i saw that in the game of Binding of Isaac and its so rare to find the glitched room and find "I am Error"
YOOO your actually doing a breakdown on this! I watched Markliplier play this game almost 4 years ago 😅 but it was such an interesting game can’t believe you know of it!
I love that we're playing as a knight, his sprite looks so dorky
Our protagonist was a crusader in the war of Jerusalem?
Already my new favorite horror game.
Sorry not sorry, FNAF.
How are you so good at finding secrets... This should took more than 10 playthrough to find them all.... :O
It’s impressive that you’re character was born centuries before the first computer was even built and was still able to hack through the game woth ease, much less even know how to operate the system in the first place.
Much much less that he could read english.
Hey superhorror I like your batdr video . I think that the pit will be the one of the experiments of joey drew with ink characters like samy , alice , and the most ones bit I dont know and im exicted to release the game very soon
This man creates some good bloody videos
this is the earliest ive ever been here omg
Kind of surprised the conclusion to Hopeless Soul just petered off to 'maybe he was a hacker or something'. I thought it was fairly clear he's actually Lucifer.
Ah yes
Time for more procrastination
This game refrences israeeel and hebrow lots of time, cool to see this as someone who lives there
Thank you SHB. Very cool
Please do the horror games, True Fear Forsaken Souls 1 & 2! They both have creepy lore and I bet there are some interesting secrets to them.
You are a legend love you bro ❤
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS SUPERHORROBROOOOOO
YES SHB POSTED! Today is a good day :D
Hey, why didn't you mention Beur here? I personally think his existence has some pretty interesting implications.
Particularly because that means there's 4 daemons, coded to protect critical data, apart from one who was resented by the other 3 for providing a glaring weakpoint to the code. It certainly reminds me of another group of 4...
I would explain further, but I'll only do so if asked.
Ay hello im not done with your petscop vid but i like your vids i like horror so this channel is amazing
The only thing weird to me about this game is, how does a knight from the year 1200 have gamer skills
It would be so cool if you could cover far: lone sails. The second game is making but I want to know what you guys think about the lore like where is everyone? Who is the character and why is there so many crashed and dead ships.
Also the crosshair in the hopeless soul fight is a classic crusader cross
I liked the ending. It was really funny!
There's just something so meme-ish about the visual of a Templar Knight playing an Arcade machine.
Imagine dying in a crusade and you wake up to a place tgat you can only guess is the future and box like things that can change their appearance on the screen like how a witch could. You would freak out so bad.
every Dan Mullins game needs a superhorrorbro story explained companion
As a Daniel Mullins game surely this game has a arg connected to it right? I don't know my first contact with Daniel Mullins games was from inscription oh yeah speaking of ARG do the hex next and cover it's ARG also I don't know if pony island has a Arg or not but from what I've heard the hex does have a Arg just cover the story already uncovered years ago from diligent gamers and make it into a short yet satisfying video recapping the game and the ARG
No seriously does pony island have an ARG like the other games or is it just that a game with a 4th wall breaking Lucifer fighting good ending story game about ponies?
Edit:I didn't realize how many times I mistook ARG and RNG that took a while
RNG? I think you meant ARG. And yes, it did. Originally it had a few secrets, but Daniel went back to add more after players on the Steam forums started digging too deep for a reward that he didn't think would be satisfying. It wasn't as extensive and the ones in the Hex or Inscryption, but it was there.
I like the end is it a new thing ur trying out? Cuz if so I like it
I wonder. Daniel likes tying his games together.
Maybe Hopeless Soul is either Luke or Kaycee?
I'd say Kaycee. She was a developer, so she might know how to hack Pony Island.
@@saphiriathebluedragonknight375 But in the course of Inscryption, you're PLAYING as Luke, and you DO have to hack Inscryption to get the full story. So there's definitely a argument for Luke, too.
I'm hoping you do one of these with inscryption.
Hey Mike I just figured out that you can save the cat in the game called house but you have to do it in the melody DLC
I still need someone to explain The Hex and Buddy Simulator to me, please Mike, you’re my only hope
Too wholesome
10/10
YES
I’m surprised you didn’t mention that Asmodeus was an usurper.
This might not be a part of Pony Island but I really hope a new horror game someone makes is some form of The Medium, it doesn't even have to be a full blown sequel just a game where it turns out your playing in the same game universe as The Medium and you can find out what happened at the end of the medium.
Now I can only imagine Lucifer at his desk or smth screaming at a computer because his code wasn't working
but there's something bugging me and i can't play the game to know the answer of it
you see.. there's that weird thing called buer or something said that the player need to say his name to azmudeos? idk is there something happening if you did that?
Pony Island? As in the MLP version? 🦄
no
@SuperHorrorBro im laughing too hard at the way your pronouncing Beelzebub (bee-L-Za-Bub)
Please explain the game Inscryption that you played earlier.
my guy Lucifer is becoming a gaming mod
By the thumbnail i would say the plot of the game is that some kid asked a pony for santa but wrote satan accidentaly
