Although the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, this town is shrouded in mystery. Something… unnatural is afoot here. I find it amusing that it is only when playing as The Dog that you can kill any demons with your Bark Attack.
But as the Postman, it seems all you can do is run from the monsters attacking you.

In witchcraft and the occult, usually it's the cats that protect you from spiritual or ethereal threats, and the dogs protect you from physical and tangle ones.
Though it makes some sense that if the dog is in the real where these entities exist in tangible form, then it could actually destroy them.
Cats and witches go together for this reason. Nothing all that sinister about innocent cats. Specially black ones. In fact, for witches it's the opposite belief: black cats are good luck, well the rest of people tend to fear them and kill them on halloween -please protect them.

The ending with the dog is my personal favorite- it shows how pets can have your back, but in a slightly more demonic way

Elders believe they drive away entities that are targeting their owners.
I kinda took the reaction to Neil to be more fake than supernatural forgetfulness. "Neil? Neil who? I never heard of no Neil." They knew what happened to him and warned him about causing trouble and panic in their little town, so they took care of him. They're just relying on the fact the mailman doesn't know what's going on and is too new to the area to really have any idea who Neil was.

I agree - I simply thought that they just disposed of the guy. Homeless guy with doggo got the best of it.

Fun fact: bridges are often seen as gateways to hell. The bridge at the very beginning is a nice little detail that shows you literally entering Helltown
Thanks for the story explained! Just a little detail: it's not a nun carrying the baby demon, but Holy Mary. It's inspired by pictures of Mary holding baby Jesus. But instead of Jesus it's a demon.
Well it makes sense, since the demon is worshiped by the cult as their messiah

@@captainomoplata643 I thought that, in the Hebrew mythology, Lilith was the 1st wife of Adam but she was too independant, turned into a demon, so Eve was created from Adam to make her less independant and more couple-oriented? Never heard that Lilith had something to do with Mary mother of Jesus? Do you have further sources I could browse through to update my knowledge?
The ending with the dog saving his owner is the most pleasant of them all.

The Dog - an ancient entity created to destroy all the others. The true saviour of the humanity. But seriously really underrated game. Ignorte by most of the big streamers.
Dog is god backwards so technically god was working through the dog because it's owner deserved his help the others lost their ways and I imagine he was saddened by that but the owner didn't he tried to warn others and now they must face DOG WARRIOR OF GOD

I was suspicious due to there being no law enforcement. Even small communities have a small sheriff division. Probably to keep what they were doing out of the law enforcements watch.
This game is definitely inspired by the town irl with the same name, they have quite a dark history and sits dormant and abandoned for well over two centuries already.
Is there any articles or links about the town? That sounds really interesting to read about.

This reminds me of a cult that used to be in my town (before I moved). I forgot a lot about it because it was 12 years ago lol. It obviously wasn’t the whole town, but it was big compared to it.

I’ve noticed a lot of Horror Games recently have been low quality or very childish. For example Helltown, The one Llama Killer game, The Bonnie’s Bakery, or even Amanda the Adventure. Maybe it starts off friendly so people can get comfortable then put them in a horror survival experience.
well this game is from 2017 so its not exactly new to match that trend.
Low quality stuff is easy to shift from higher to lower for scares/effects. Not to mention better file size and ect. Also taking a setting that is bright and cheery and making it perverted in someway normally makes it for an easy way to unsettle people.

This sort of thing is pretty common in horror media. Something looks unassuming and happy, only so that it can be all the scarier for its actual horrors.
It's like going in a hot tub before leaping into a cold pool, the sheer difference amplifies the shock. Not to mention, it both makes you put your guard down just a little bit, and it builds tension as you wait for the horror you know is approaching.
I’ve seen all these and that’s exactly what they all have in common
I love how normal it is nowadays to be terrified but highly abnormal to be happy in a horror game
Wait what if it's like where John already died, and was already caught. He lives through what happened over and over as a external nightmare forever, as in whatever ending he gets he will "relive" the nightmare forever. Or he it's like how when he woke up from the running in the woods as if it was a nightmare, but in reality it was a faint memory from his past "life" when he was running from the graveyard. So no matter what happens, it will repeat FOREVER. Lol idk if that made sense😅
the lore and nostalgia in this game may make me wonder the amount of possibilities there are in horror games(don't know how lol but I usually I do this because I'm honestly fascinated by coding)

That dog is awesome. Going to hell just to save his owner and saving them both from a cult who look up to a demon. The dog is good so there for the demon couldn't do any thing to make him evil beacues all dogs go to heaven like in that John fulok movie which is a classic and is very good 👍 ❤ if you guys haven't seen it go watch it, you won't regret it. It too has a German shepherd as the star of the movie 🎬 🎞 🎥 🎦 📽

I thought that the fly in a web thing was a metaphor of how the townsfolk didn't listen to Jon about Neil existing.

I just realized that helltown has some similarities to Jonestown
1. Poisonous drinks
2. A cult town
3. Cult leader being the head of the town
It's safe to say it's loosely based off of the Jonestown incident
At least that's what I think
I like how the hotel gives the shining vibes.
You see, the reason why the dog was able to free his owner and defeat the demons is because he's a Good Boy. He's such a Good Boy that he holds the pure goodness that defeats evil.
Mike does so good on explaining the story to us. We hope to see more of his cool content in the future!

since you're playing small horror games, I have two games I recommend playing. first being Beholder 2, for how it has parallels to real life dictatorship. and bugsnax, most in the part to the fact that despite it's cute artstyle and gameplay, shockingly has some adult themes to it. I was kind of expecting the beginning to be some reference to the inferno as it starts out in a forest itself and Dante is chased as well until he finds a clearing

Yeah I'm kind of curious if you go through the small town you'll notice there aren't any children now I know that Colts some of them well have you practice abstinence but for this cult it really doesn't make sense because the entity wants to devour as many Souls as it can but I do remember in Layla's Journal her talking about her eating a small boy that came across the cabin so I'm curious did the people in the town their children as a step of some kind of ritual or am I just overthinking it

I like how this game really holds its influences on its sleeve, and it makes me wonder what homages are there that I missed or didn't recognise
So far you see allusions to The Shining, Silent Hill, Lovecraft, Amnesia/Penumbra, etc
There's almost certainly more that I just don't recognise, but Stephen King works like The Shining and Silent Hill are the most obvious
This low polygon aesthetic that's been showing up a lot recently with indie games is probably so popular because it gives people a nostalgic feeling for games they played growing up.
What an incredible video! Great theories as always, and happy to see there was an ending involving the doggo 🐶. Helltown is a genuinely creepy and disturbing game, on par with Madison and the Mortuary Assistant in my opinion.

Unless I missed something tho, there’s just one thing I don’t understand, why did that entity (the same kind it looked like the dog was scaring away) kill Niel, and why did the pastor, Lilith, The Dark Ones, etc. want that? I’d appreciate if someone could clear this up

Ok, but let me expain (as European you should recognize classic medieval arts). It is not nun painting, it is modification of one of medieval Eastern European Virgin Mary Icons, there is some mayor changes in this picture. You should know that in icons everything have matters: position, color, greek symbols, gesture ect. When we compare real icon with this one in game, you can see some not accidental changes: picture is fliped horizontaly, Mary have black dress and of coures instead of Jesus, there is some piece of meat (?). Ok, it is enought of history of art for today. Have a nice day / night :)
I love this game, the style and story mix really well. The atmosphere of the outcast in the town, but still over friendly community. Although the story is kinda ass ways a lot of the time. I really like this game.
This is one of those stories that becomes less scary the more you dig into it. On the surface it’s really cool and creepy, but once you find out about the nun, dark ones and the pastor just being controlled by an evil entity, it stops becoming scary and instead feels formulaic.

something i noticed: The churches door at the beginning of the video were clean but later on you can see scratches signifying that a demon scratched it making little vale's involvement in demonic activity more obvious

The Dog is a gaurdian angel, and that homeless guy, while down on his luck, is the only good person in littlevale, just finding himself there by chance but never actually giving up hope, so the dog was sent to him as a protector, hence the reason the dog can kill demons with its bark.
