- The Bathhouse story explained: Looking to escape her job in the city a young woman moves to the countryside where she takes a job in a Japanese bathhouse. Soon she discovers this isn't any ordinary bathhouse and a malicious spirit haunts the building. The Bathhouse is the latest horror game from Chilla's Art. This video explains the full story and both endings of The Bathhouse.

I thought the boy was saying his mom forced his hand into the fan but then i realized that he was actually telling his mom that your character forced his hand into the fan
Me too, I was like "Wtf? What is his mom doing??" but then I realized what it meant 🤡
I think the boy and the mother are spirits or memory that roaming around the village. I'm guessing some people that has a shadow on their face is a spirits and the one that doesn't is probably a real person
@@lilylovesya3853 Shove the whole child in
Actually, I think he was talking about the ghost, but his mom thought he was saying the player did it.
This is the 3rd video I watched that made that claim. I have not seen one analyze it correctly like you did.
1:48 actually the poster in Japanese says he's wanted for "the homicide of a woman"
Thanks
problem just a cover up for the disappearance
Thank you, detective Pikachu. We can always depend on you.
And his name is Tooru Maruhisa.
This is interesting and adds credence to the theory that he is the chained up son. Because in a roundabout way, his existence did result in the death of his mother. Not his fault, of course, but I'm sure the monk (who is probably behind the posters) feels like it is.
I hope the bathhouse gets a sequel or something. There's still a few things that could be added, such as how the first missing girl's grandmother got to the village and how she knew her granddaughter had died in the bathhouse. Or what really made Erena lose her memory of Maina. If they do a sequel I hope the ending is a happy one for the girls and their families and the spirit, maybe she gets to reunite with her son.
Nope...useful as movie plot but sucked as online game...
Also about how Yoko ended up as outcast before becoming the "trigger" of this summoning thing......
Although I kinda guess it might be a cliche about the "outcast woman" 😒
Agreed! :>
@@nazogirl1127 I Never heard of that cliche before.
I'm guessing what made Erena lose her memory of her sister, Maina, had something to do with the curse.
I think it might be that the sacrifice or the ghosts erased her from memory. There’s a few Japanese legends that cover not simply dying after being killed by a ghost but also having their existence erased. It’s a good existential nightmare. When I’m awake more I’ll see if I can find those specific tales.
I think corpse party also has somthing like that. I haven't played it but In one of the endings there is a group picture of the cast but the faces of the ones who didn't survive blacked out. That is pure dreadful.
Moral of the story:
If you found a flyer that said "rent is free if you work for (whatever job that is)"..... Just don't accept it easily without looking up about it 😒
Nothing is free and genuine kindness is very rare these days.
Ubume is usually pronounced "oo-boo-may," not "oo-boom," but that's a minor nitpick.
Interesting thing about the memory loss: as far as I can tell, the loss of the memory of a person seems to be a recurring thing in Japanese ghost stories. The biggest example I can name right now is Corpse Party, where anyone who dies has their whole memory wiped from the world outside the ghostly realm.
wait so in corpse party they don’t actually die?
@@wow-bp6vf they do still die but the people who are on the top have their memories wiped of the people who died so it seems like they never existed in the first place but anyone who survived the school still has their memories
Awesome and cool! :>
@@wow-bp6vf Its worse, not only do they die, they feel the physical pain they felt when they died(example you were stabbed to death so you always feel a stabbing pain) and in the real world nobody remembers them except the people who went in the cursed realm with them.
More oo-boo-meh but yes
Just random tidbits here:
- for some reason, some comments say Maina's name should be read as "mee-na". Well, I checked the kanji and this is how it should be read: 舞(ma)伊(i)奈(na)
- on the other hand, SHB incorrectly read "u" from both Umeki and ubume as "you". it should be read as "oo", similar to food or mood. So, Umeki as "oo-meh-key" and ubume as "oo-boo-meh"
- Imojiro is literally the potato guy, based on his name "imo" meaning potato.
Japanese’s pronunciation system isn’t as complex as people make it to be haha. You just need to know how each hiragana and/or katakana in the alphabet is pronounced and you’re pretty much all set (e.g. あいうえお). Sure there’s rising and falling intonation to differentiate certain kanjis, such as 箸 (はし) vs 橋 (はし), but just for putting a Japanese names into a sentence, you don’t need that.
Ngl I kinda feel bad for Maina in all of this, she really got the short end of the stick by the end of the story…

Love your videos! Just one correction: The little boy indicates that Miana was the one who forced his hand in the fan. In reality, I think he just did it himself. (Or maybe it was a ghost?) He says, "Mother, she forced my hand into the fan." I added the comma, which makes the sentence easier to understand. That's why the mom was so angry with Miana.
Or maybe change the comma into exclamation mark, indicating he's calling for his mother. The comma only makes me think that he's saying his mother is the one that forced (told) him to put his hand on the fan, which is contradictory to your last statement
He might have only thought it was Mina since she was the only other person there, so, of course, it could have only been her
I thought it was the ghost (and that the boy blamed Maina because he was unsure) but she only seems to gain power to hurt/touch others after the sacrifice, so maybe he was just being a dumb kid and blamed Maina so he didn't get in trouble? Or him vaguely saying "she" would obviously mean the only person on staff to the mother, when it was actually somehow the ghost. Maybe she has some power over the mind? I can't imagine it was the mother since the genders are split at this bathhouse and with how she chided Maina. I think it was just a grammatical error as a result of translation issues. Since it's Chilla's Art, some of the gaps are kind of left to the imagination (and horror of working in customer service where you must accept blame for everything).
This bit reminded me of that scene in The Invisible Man when (spoilers) he hits the daughter, but she naturally assumes it was Cecilia because she was the only person visibly in the room, and of course being a protector, the dad takes the daughter's side in it.
I've noticed a pattern with all of the Asian horror games Mike talks about; the monster, especially if it's based on a mythical creature or a legend are almost always female. Does Asia just not have any male monsters from myth or folklore?
Maybe the most terrifying thing to the people of Asia is... The Woman.. I got chills just thinking about it
actually there are quite a number out there. many of them arent even gender specific to be honest.
Around Eastern Asia, children and Females are often being depicted to have a higher mental/spiritual power, so they are more likely to become such a strong spiritual being than grown male.
And also, female are frequently subjected to get a mistreatment from who ever their male partner are, especially in such country with male-dominated culture.
However, I need to note that, for many Japanese Yokai, it doesn't really require the original identity to be female in order for them to do their things like transforming into, or creating illusion of a female in order to trick normal human being and do what ever their lore are supposed to make them do.
Oh and often than not, we Asian seems to have more body-horror going on to those evil spirits than the western culture for some reason.
It kinda reminds of the Fatal Frame franchise where the final bosses were always women who were sacrificed although in FF2 one of the main threats was the Kusabi which was the spirit of a man that was brutally tortured.
In all cultures the main ghosts are women. Is about everyone knowing how society treat them unfairly and fearing the backlash after they die.
In south east asia, there's a lot of male ghost or monster myth. But as mention on comment before, a lot of scary vengeful ghost usually are culturally a woman or a child who were being abused and killed or was a part of sacrificial ceremony. while male monster myth are more like a greedy person who sell his soul and turn into monsters for greedy reason. storytelling wise, It is understandable that woman ghost are more developed in games and movies.
if anyone interested, I would like to recommend a game called Dreadout, It's an Indonesian game similar to fatal frame but it has a catalogue of south east asian ghost myth and lore.
It may be both an act of kindness and trauma caused by ptsd that made Erena forget about her sister.
Great vid bro. Here’s a life hack that makes reading any Japanese word super easy: the vowels will only ever make one noise. There are only about 126 sounds in Japanese so these sounds are always for the vowels: a says “ah”, e says “eh”, i always says “ee”, u says “oo”, and o is always “oh”. So “Mina” sounds like “Meena”. You’d be hard pressed to find a word in Japanese that doesn’t use exclusively these noises.
The game seems to legit spell it Maina? Like, at the end, "who's maina?" So, correct pronunciation is correct.
Hey that’s exactly like the Hawaiian vowel sounds
That’s why I like Japanese. No silent letters, they make the sounds they’re written as. :)
The characters name is Maina, it’s a name that’s not common but not necessarily rare either in Southeast Asia, Nepal, India, etc. “Moiyna” or “My-na” is actually the correct pronunciation
@@Tsumami__ oh snap you're right. I was mostly listening to the video so I hadn't noticed. Still should help with pronouncing Uboe correctly.
I have been feeling burnt out, feeling down and watching your videos always puts a smile on my face, keep up with amazing work that you do x
Nobody talks about the fishing area. I feel like there's definitely another ending surrounding that
It was a thank you to the people who funded the game
There's an achievement when you fish all sacks and put it in the wall

It’s 12:13 am for me , but same with that statement
This come 3 hours ago for, and I was busy at that time.
Dose anything happen if you don’t pull the hair out of the wall or is it just same endings.
I assume that nothing really would happen if you dont pull the hair out since the hair is back even longer everyday anyways
@@jfplaying5676 I suspected as much.
And it all could've been avoided if only Maina chose not to get blessed by the Monk 😔😔😔
(But seriously, what would've happened if Maina refused the Monk's offer to be blessed in the first place?)
The internet said it will give negative effect but in the game it's still the same whether you chose to be blessed or not. idk if it's true but try to confirm. I'm too lazy to even think deeply to this
I love that, after the premise, all I needed was to see the car model and just *immediately* knew it was a Chilla Arts game.
I don't know if it's on purpose or it's just what they're working with, but even the most *basic* character models are so utterly disturbing in Chilla games...
A very nice and detailed explanation as always! I have two questions left - first one is about the hair, is it the hair of the demon woman trying to capture Maina? Or it just there to show how powerful or close she is to her? Second is, the further we are into the game, the more stuff Maina has in her room, like in the beginning she barely has anything, and then she has a microwave, a fridge and later on a tv. Does this mean something?
Good questions!
Lol I had assumed the characters disappeared because it was an indie game and it was similar to how models or far away objects in older or large games don’t load until you move closer to them.
This game has a bittersweet ending
I love SuperHorrorBro he’s always so consistent & thoughtful!

Cool thanks for content only game I haven't got to play yet.Really like Chillas Art games 😀😁
I've seen Jacksepticeye and 8-BitRyan play this game and it is both incredible and very horrifying. I surely would not be able to play it myself, as I feel more comfortable watching others getting scared and having the stories explained by CZcamsrs like you! This was very interesting and informative! Thank you very much for explaining!
I do have to wonder, though, if there are any relations to the Ubume and the ghosts from movies such as "The Grudge". I've only seen the American versions, having been 13 at the time (and I'm still terrified of them to this day), but I noticed that the Ubume and the ghosts from those movies share similar physical appearances: being women (and a young boy in the case of the first film) with ashy or white skin, wide red eyes (I think?), gaping mouths and long black hair that is often involved in the haunting of victims.
Though I think "The Grudge" ghosts were only vengeful spirits of the women who spread a curse from their place of violent deaths to anyone who entered it and not demons. I'm honestly too scared of them to Google about them, so I'm just going off of memory, lol. One of the victims, later one of the ghosts, is even named Yoko, so hearing that name in this game made me think of the first film even more.
I'm just curious if there's a relation between them, though, and if this game and those movies had been based around the same thing! Other culture's myths are very fascinating. Apologies for the lengthy comment!
So the ghosts from movies like the Ring and the Grudge were actually inspired by vengeful Japanese spirits called Onryo, which literally translates to "grudge-spirit". They are actually pretty interesting part of Japanese folklore that are even connected to prominent people in Japanese history such as Tairo no Masakado, Emperor Sutuko, and Sugawara no Michizane, the first and second of which have shrines dedicated to them in Japan still to this day (haven't heard anything about Emperor Sutuko but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a shrine dedicated to him).
@@angeryfluuf6514 Thank you for the great info! I appreciate it so much! If I ever gather up the courage to, I'll have to look into Onryo even more!
Geez. Feels like forever since you've done one of these.
Just watched your play through as you posted this
There's a game coming out under the radar and it's a sequel to Anna, Extended Edition. You'd be doing the dev team a huge favor if you covered the first game and it's storyline so more people looked it up. It's one of my favorite games, so if you need a breakdown of the ending let me know.
My only qualm about this game is the absolute insanity of the main character. Who the heck sees long black hair coming out of a hole in their wall and just casually plucks it out and heads to work every day???
There were some big plotholes in the whole game, like when you find Maina in the Sauna and she runs away for some reason your main concern is to take a bath
@@zrixhi that too 😂

Amazing video
So wait, I am dumb. Yoko is both the woman who died after giving birth and the first sacrifice? Wasn't Yoko's death the cause for Ubume's summoning, or was the spirit always around? I am confused at how many women were involved, if 3 or 4.
I was confused about that too! Because if Yoko was supposed to be the first sacrifice to get rid of the Ubume then Yoko couldn't be the Ubume itself- Not to mention it said Yoko's death happened in (I wanna say July?) and the boy who was supposedly to Monk's son, and the son of the original woman the Monk killed, then that woman should be the Ubume, right? The Ubume is supposed to be the spirit of a woman who died in child birth, so it wouldn't make any sense for Yoko to be the Ubume-
@@xsirboshka007 I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one confused! And two months later, I still am 😅
Yoko is the original yurei/ubume haunting the bathhouse. She died more than 8 months ago given she has a full grown (?) son. The first sacrifice was Matsuno's (elderly lady) granddaughter. Maina was the second. Erena was going to be the third. 3 were needed for her to gain the power to become an onyro, I guess?
@@washedblue if i am correct, the Monk wanted to created a ubume in order to do so you need a pregnate female that is where Yoko came into play she became pregnate with the monks child then killed by the monk and landlord but she gave birth to the child before her death then she became the revengeful spirit was tied to the monk who wanted to kill 3 females so he can escape town so the good ending you free Yoko son an he dose the monk and landlord in gasoline and light them on fire then the bath house was torch.
Was waiting for this! The story was a bit confusing to me.
I did a little inside every time Mike pronounces ubume as “yooboom”

One question: if yoko's missing was 8 months ago, how can his son is a grown man already? Or does the monk and yoko's love story took place years ago and just recently the monk decided to kill yoko 8 months prior?
