    If an actor is good enough to play the part then that's all that matters. Their sexuality in real life should play no part in it.

      I agree… but sometimes it does play a part. For example, if an openly gay man was cast as a romantic lead in a (straight) chick flick, it wouldn’t do well at the box office. Because many women wouldn’t be turned on by the lead actor and wouldn’t get obsessed w the movie. So even though it sounds good in theory, IRL it doesn’t always work like that. Hollywood knows this. So minority communities do have somewhat limited roles compared to straight men and women. That said, they should go with the actor that’s best for the role, but maybe take into account that some people don’t have the same opportunities and if a role comes up for them let’s give them more of a chance. It’s a very nuanced issue.

    Personally I have been dissapointed when the supposedly male hetro love interest is obvously gay (eg speech pattern or gestures). Same when an actor does a bad accent. Stops you getting into the drama. Maybe the important things is how good an actor they are? If they are really good they will get accents and sexuality right and be convincing.

  • @Iwantmymtv
    @Iwantmymtv Před 2 lety +5

    Totally agree with Rupert Everett. I remember reading a review once of the movie Six Days & Seven nights that said Ann Heche playing a straight character was not believable (she was together with Ellen Degeneres at that time) and I found that very narrow minded. So gay actors should be able to play straight roles and vice versa. And about JK Rowling: she should not have been cancelled for her statements on the gender issue. There was nothing wrong what she said. Instead she should have been canceled for her books because they are so bad.

    • @selmahare

      Word 🤣 Honestly, more power to her for having managed to make it out of poverty and into wealth. But facts are that I never got what the fuss was with those Harry Potter books either. Never read one, and could never even bring myself to watch more than 5 mns of the whole movie franchise. I feel like she basically marketed on how immaturely blinded and impressed a lot of people were by all things British at the time. She basically profited from the inferior complex based British idolatry of the times. I don’t really think that her books would have been as successful now. Girl was simply in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. She basically hit the jackpot with the magic formula of the era. Glad that we have evolved to more mature times ever since. As for her comments regarding the trans community she was indeed spot on, I’m afraid.

    If a straight or gay actors committed enough to kiss the sex they’re not attracted to why do we care? And it’s acting it’s not real they should be able to play both roles it’s like if everyone in Thor would have to be Nordic that would be very hard due to the small Nordic population in America and would take awhile to find good nordic actors and we wouldn’t get to see such good acting like chris hens worth or the actor for heimdall I’m Nordic and I completely agree with people that aren’t nordic playing as nordic roles it should be the same for sexuality
    Imagine if the English actor for Thorin Oakenshield had to be nordic we wouldn’t have such a great movie and he played the part perfectly

    So if gay actors can play straight roles, which there is no reason they shouldn't, straight actors should be able to play gay or trans roles.
    Isn't that what acting is, taking on a character regardless of a characters sexuality.
    Good on Scarlett Johansson for taking on a trans role, that's her job to act a part.
    If you are an actor then isn't it your job to take on roles out of your comfort zone, being an actor is just that, acting out roles.

    I agree with most of it, but the problem with trans roles is not whether they're played by trans actors, rather that they're played by opposite sex actors. You can't have a man playing a woman or a woman playing a man, that's just not rigt, as if people continued to believe that trans were just men in drag pretendibg to be something they're not, and vice versa.

    • @latitudeselongitudes1932
      @latitudeselongitudes1932 Před 2 lety +3

      Yes, but they were in the closet i believe. You have to understand the psychology of fans and their relationship with their idols, especially women and their favorite actors and musicians. It involves a lot of fantasizing, fetish. If a man is openly gay he doesn't have the same appeal, allure in the minds of many fans, most viewers of romantic period movies or romantic comedies (Rupert's types of movies) are women and they like to fantasize about their heartthrobs. This is still true today and even more so in the 80's and 90's when Rupert would have been boycotted. Hollywood knows that, it's a business, what matters is money to them, it's a question of desirability in the eyes of the fans, most of them women.
