- Trail angels have become an integral presence along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and other long distance hiking trails across the country. In general, trail angels perform random acts of kindness and assistance (often referred to as trail magic) to thru-hikers along remote stretches of trail where access to water and other amenities are limited or non existent.
The trail magic they perform often occurs unexpectedly and without warning in the form of fresh water, food, shelter, or a car ride to the nearest town. They know how important it is for thru-hikers to complete the trail in its entirety. Therefore, they understand the hardships of hiking a long distance trail and often appear when a thru-hiker needs help or encouragement the most.
For the past ten years, Apple has been setting up a large tent equipped with a wood burning stove in a remote corner of Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. By mid November, southbound thru-hikers, who started their journey on top of the 5,268 foot peak of Mount Katahdin in Maine, will have walked about 2,000 miles by the time they reach Apple’s shelter just 111 miles from the southern terminus located in northern Georgia. As if appearing out of nowhere, Apple’s shelter offers a brief respite for thru-hikers before they forge ahead to reach the summit of Springer Mountain in Georgia.
For one week in November, White Blaze follows Apple as he supports weary southbound thru-hikers along the Appalachian Trail by offering them food, water, and encouragement to reach the end of the famous 2,178 mile wooded footpath. White Blaze examines the brief encounters experienced between thru-hikers and one trail angel.
Wow...you are a real angel from heaven to take care of thru-hikers...Thanks a lot, Sir.
That was lovely. A really good documentary about a really good man.
Such a beautiful place.
What a remarkable Documentary and a fantastic human being Apple really is. Full credits to the man, how amazing it must be to receive warm shelter and food/drinks after miles of hardship. AMAZING.
Thank you so much for being a trail angel, I'm sure you have been the highlight of many a thru hikers memories.
What a great idea, love the sentiment and kinda restores your faith in humanity
Excellent documentary!!! Bless this man & all the trail angels out there! Thanks for the great content!
Thank You to all the Trail Angels out there! We Love you!!!
Trails Angels Rock! Capt. America
Makes me want to be a trail angel, too. I think it's awesome what you are doing! Thanks for the inspiration.
I've lived in Franklin in past years and your location is a perfect place to spread some magic. They have it covered near Wayah and Standing Indian but you are in a remote area there. Appreciate your efforts. Might see you next year ...
I really enjoyed this little documentary
Great video, very well done. Also, thank you for your service to hikers.
thank you all trail angles on the AT,PCT Flordida trail, & other trails trail magic can make your day if you have been having a really bad day or even a good day it is apprecated
Awesome, Awesome documentary!!!! Just Awesome!
Apple you are one cool guy ,i hope im lucky enough to meet u some day. -Tinman
what a dude.
Did he offer these foods and beverages for free?? This man is awesome if it's true
"RADIO SHACK" radio!!!!
I have to say this video shows a more realistic view of the trail. It's a little darker, a more in-your-face of what thru hikers encounter. I'm not knocking other videos of hikers experiences but this one has less happy dance footage and focuses on the flip side of that...the lonely stretches, gear failure and what never seems to end inclement weather. The south bound thru hiker brings up an excellent point. Services cater more to north-bounders. The AT Conservancy strives for more Sobo's but with lack of services, that will be a hard sell.
I dont understand what it matters if a hiker is sobo or nobo. They are hiking the trail so thats not fair.
Awesome video. Loved every minute of it. Would like to do it some day. Do you know of certain area that needs trail angels along the trail?

Thanks for the information.
From the video's i've watched on thru-hiking the AT you dont see to much trail magic in the northern section. Is it because the number of hikers has dwindled down? If there was a need for it I would love to help out in Vermont.
Wow, nothing can really express what a kind soul you are, Apple! You're doing a really good thing; if I ever hike the AT, It'd be a pleasure to stop in for a chat (and one of those hot dogs of course, haha)
What was the deal with the dogs? I must've missed something. Did someone lose them?
+Rachel Jackson I think they were part of a pack of hunting dog's. They got seperated from the other dogs and befriended a trail angel. They must get lost quite often for the owner to have the sense to put contact info on them.
D Fuller Ahhh, that makes sense. They seemed soft as anything, they were loving those belly rubs!
Yeah I think the owner really spoils his dogs also. They were very healthy and happy looking dogs.
Doing a great thing, but who starts in January?
thats what im sayin...
