    On the other hand, second edition caused my local to sell first edition ships at 75% off. Took the day off work and raided all the good stuff.

  • @whittaker007
    @whittaker007 Před rokem +24

    The second edition changes were mainly to fix the game which ended up in a broken state for competitive play after FFG made some mistakes and tried to fix them by adding more broken stuff and ended up in a place where the game was no longer much fun for competitive tournaments. Second edition fixed a lot of problems, added movable turrets (instead of turrets being able to shoot anywhere anytime. It added The Force to give innate advantage and force powers to special characters like Luke and Vader. It added a whole bunch of new stuff.
    Interestingly the upgrade kits were largely looked back on as a mistake, not because they forced people to buy them to keep playing, but more because one the kits were out there there was no longer any reason to buy more ships. If you had a conversion kit you could pick up the ships you wanted on the second hand market, or in sales. X-wing revenue dropped and became far less profitable for FFG and likely part of the reason FFG's Star Wars miniature games were taken away from them by Asmodee and handed over to AMG who make Marvel Crisis Protocol and now have to deal with X-Wing, Armarda and Legion.
    AMG's version of the game (dubbed X-Wing 2.5) uses the second edition components but made significant changes to the rules, squad building and added objectives. Now you have 20 points to spend on ships, and each ship comes with a number of loadout points which you can spend on upgrades. When you destroy a ship you add that ship's points to your score, and the first player to 20 points wins. So you can win by destroying all your opponents ships, but you can also get points for engaging with the objectives.
    These changes have been wildly controversial, and along with COVID making it difficult or impossible for folks to get together and play the game, there has been a significant drop off in the player base for competitive X-wing. And without much in the way of new content being released to stores, it's been difficult to get new players into the game. There's not even an official app for squad building any more. Competitive X-wing is being held together largely by the community until AMG is able to produce a complete product.
    That said, new products are on the way like being able to buy starter boxes for each faction and a minimal core set of components, so you don't have to buy the old core set if you don't want to play as the 2 factions that come in the box. And there are scenario packs like Battle of Yavin if you want to do a fun trench run scenario. And despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth at AMG's changes, the game is the best it has ever been from a competitive standpoint, and is just as fun as it's ever been.

    I really enjoyed playing X-wing in general during 1.0. It unfortunately got annihilated by power creep, but I still enjoy it. And yeah, I also never made the effort to upgrade to 2.0 because it looked like it would be too expensive. Still a fun game in a vacuum.

  • @whittaker007
    @whittaker007 Před rokem +13

    I highly recommend checking out Heroes of the Aturi Cluster fan-made expansion, especially if you are playing with mostly board gamers, because it changes the came from a 1v1 competitive miniatures game into a 1-6 player cooperative mission-based adventure with RPG elements. Each player starts off in a basic X-Wing or Y-Wing and face off against the Empire which is driven by a simple yet unpredictable AI driven by rolling a standard 6-sided die and following the steps printed on the ship sheet.
    Blowing up ships and achieving objectives earns points which can be spent to upgrade your pilot and ship. The upgrade system allows players to use abilities and upgrades not normally available to those ships in the regular game and actively encourages players to make broken combos. As players level up, the difficulty level does too, and you fly against tougher enemies. It's quite brilliant and a whole lot of fun. I played this with some board gamer friends who loved it, but would otherwise not be interested in the regular head-to-head x-wing at all.
    The more players you have, the more enemy ships you need, so the number of Empire ships you can get a hold of might limit the number of players you can play with unless you use substitutes. It also requires printing quite a few pages of stuff, though you can also buy most of the components from an online store.

    2nd edition is definitely still a fantastic game. It makes a lot of quality of life improvements over 1.0. One of the largest being the points all being online. This has made it so that most ships have remained competitive throughout all of 2.0 life cycle.
    Unfortunately, X-Wing is in a deep run and I don't see it making its way out. I hope I'm wrong but we will see. Between COVID and AMG's massive rule changes with 2.5, most players seem to have ditched the game.
    For those who enjoy 2.5, keep enjoying it.
    For those who enjoy 2.0, I recommend X-Wing Legacy. It's done a solid job so far updating points and adapting all the new content to 2.0.

  • @zombygunslinger

    AMG, who took over the game from FFG, seems to be letting the second edition die, they've abandoned huge ships and Epic play and have been promoting their other SW games, but have been very quiet about X-Wing. They did release some squad packs and have a scenario coming out, but they've gone silent. I think they decided it wasn't worth the trouble and their "2.5" rules really pissed off the remaining users that didn't give up after 2.0.

    Completely agree and glad to see people talking of this dead yet still good game. Not perfect by any means but man the money grubbing from 1st to 2nd edition really felt bad. As you said I have enough for it for a long time so eh it’s still there for me and me buying all my models again is not in the cards.
    As an aside they are even more money grubbing now as they made the 2.0 conversion lists illegal to use in tournaments now so they want to force you to buy the new model boxes. Of course now after wasting your money on the original ships , then conversion kits and now new models years down the line. Scummy stuff imo.

    Also, not sure if it is a fan bias thing or what, but I also like the Star Trek Attack Wing version of this game a bit more. You are flying slightly bigger ships so they are less maneuverable, but have bigger weapons and shields. You can also build up an entire crew on them in addition to ship upgrades which just makes the game that much more interesting to me.

    • @dblevins343
      @dblevins343 Před rokem +1

      STAW got me into it, but I far prefer X-Wing. I think Attack Wing would have been better if ships had more health and 1v1s and 2v2s played better. I think X-Wing also far surpassed AW via the amount of stuff that was released. List building (especially in 2.0) is just more complex and leads to a lot more min maxing.

    • @Trueflights
      @Trueflights Před rokem +2

      If be curious to a a comparison list. I still think there are way more products for Attack Wing than X-wing. There is just more to pull things from. I think the are around 14 different factions in STAW, each with at least a handful of different ships with all sorts of upgrades. Many of those were released several times with different upgrades each time, as well as all the independent ships,upgrade card packs, and several large ship packs. There were also a ton of organized play events with rare so packs as participation rewards and prizes. Even a limited set of blind boosters that was disfigured a part of a draft style tournament.
      X-Wing did finally catch on to the idea of scenario play and there are some good campaigns both player made and official. That was something that STAW had right from the start.

    • @dblevins343
      @dblevins343 Před rokem +1

      @Trueflights sadly, X-Wing is still missing scenarios. 2.5 scenarios shouldn't really deserve the name scenario because they don't actually represent anything story driven. But, X-Wing does have some fun casual scenarios.
      Back to variety, X-Wing has the benefit of all the different ships. One issue with Attack Wing is the reliance on the same ships just with different paint jobs and captains. For the record, I like attack wing, I still buy it occasionally too. I just dont think it has the variety of X-Wing. Yes, X-Wing reuses ships sometimes too but generally it's all different ships. The 7 ractions really spread things out and X-Wing still has more ships to pick from. If my math is correct, X-Wing currently has 81 different ships in the game. These aren't just changed titles with different paint jobs either. Some of these 81 are found in multiple factions (such as the Tie fighter) but I only counted it once. Some are similar, but every one is unique. Then X-Wing still has the upgrade cards. Despite the 2nd edition reboot, it still has tons of upgrades.
      I think what really disappointed me about Attack Wing was I wanted the combat to last longer per ship. I felt like Attack Wing felt like a dog fight instead of 2 massive ships playing mind games (like Star Trek often times portrays these fights). That's where X-Wing took the cake. I think the scale Attack Wing was aiming for would have been better met with a game system like Armada. But, Attack Wing came out before Armada but after X-Wing.
      With that said, Attack Wing is still fun. I particularly love the planet token for scenarios.

    • @dblevins343
      @dblevins343 Před rokem +1

      @Trueflights out of curiosity, I am actually very curious. Where is Attack Wing still popular? I don't mean this as a rude remark, it's an actual question. I don't know of anywhere to even purchase it anymore outside of Ebay and Amazon (which is where I buy it). Thus, I definitely don't know of anyone anywhere near me still playing it. Is it still popular in Europe?

    • @Trueflights
      @Trueflights Před rokem +2

      @@dblevins343 There are a few holdout areas here in NY that I have found with active communities. It kind of had a similar issue to X-Wing in that there was a second edition "reboot" which divided the community, combined with Wizkids super poor support and lack of ability to keep the starter sets in stock anywhere (their revious games were semi collectables with limited print run sets, so they treated Attack Wing the same and obviously that doesn't work with this type of game). That kind of killed the game unfortunately. They tried to bring it back with a co-op campaign version called Star Trek Alliance. You can still find that in stores and it has been received pretty well. They need to continue to expand it though if they want to keep the game alive and have any chance at bringing back Attack Wing.

    I think you've got the red maneuver rule wrong - IIRC it only stops you taking actions or performing other red maneuvers, not red and white maneuvers.
    Also have you heard of HOTAC - Heroes of the Aturi Cluster. It wraps a (super high production value) fan made campaign around the base game. You start as lowly rookie pilots in crummy ships, then level up as you complete missions (which are excellently written and balanced) and buy upgrades and switch into better ships.

    I just really did not like what they did with second edition.
    Compressing the pilot skill count didn't make sense,making the point system exclusive to the phone app doesn't make it easier to get people to play the game,and the packaging went from a reliable protective clamshell to a cheap cardboard box which you had to rip apart,forcing you to spend more on getting exeternal storage options.
    But the Goddamn cherry on top of this hatred cake is since Atomic Games took over,we no longer get the lovely FFG website coverage of the expansions,finding any news in the same coherent manner is a real pain(as bad as finding the same information for Star Trek Attack Wing),that cake is also still delievered in the same nightmare of about four times exchange rate AND shipping costs brining the cost way up for SEA.

    I have fond memories of this game in its early days. It did suffer greatly from power creep towards the end. You literally won or lost the game before you set a single miniature on the table. It was all about list building. The 2nd edition fixed most of the problems and was also very enjoyable. The newest iteration from AMG (the community calls it 2.5) is even better! The latest version involved "NO" money grab, and was simply rules updates and new squad building.

    The competitive games I saw were like 2 or maybe 3 turns, and all they did was fly forward, and turn 90 degrees once. It looked so boring, and so sad. I thought it was going to be a big game of counter plays, but instead ships were just taking one pass and blowing up everyone.
