    I'm just going to throw this out into the universe for anyone just starting: I started late in 1.0, have been playing actively for a few years now.
    2 core sets at the start gets you the dice you'll need, as well as the tokens/ships for a great deal (you can usually get them on sale now that the game has been out for a little bit). I would also focus on just one specialty craft for the empire, especially if you're looking to get good (like the tie advanced v1 or x1 or even the decimator).
    The empire thrives on a particular play style: almost a 40k imperium of man 'no lives matter' dogma. You're going to loose tie fighters in a fight. There's no getting around that. So having a specialty ship with tie support tends to be very beginner friendly for this game, it gives you options. This play style (I call it support and ace) lets you learn the maneuverability of each of the ships, and gives you a start in deciding what you want to work at.
    For empire, I would argue there are 3 current play styles: swarm (I'm throwing 8 ships at you, good luck), beef/salad (I have 4 dummy thicc ships with 20+ hull between them, good luck) and aces (I have 3-4 ships that all can hit harder than Babe Ruth, good luck). I would STRONGLY suggest trying these styles as you learn the game, and figure out which one you like.
    Most importantly, have fun. At the end of the day, we're people screaming at plastic ships and dice, don't take it too seriously.

      I recently picked up a Force Awakens core set at what I thought was a good deal. Getting a 2nd edition core set would actually fix my problem wouldn't it and wouldn't then need the conversion sets? I'm basing this on the things you get in my box

    • @joedrumm5239
      @joedrumm5239 Před 2 lety +1

      @@chrisr3570 it would, the only thing you'd be missing is dials. The die between sets are the same, but damage cards, dials and range tools are a little different. At this point, conversion sets are cheap enough to be viable, but not just for one first edition core set. I'd look to try and get 3 or 4 old ships of one faction, snage a conversion kit and go from there.

    When I started with X-Wing 1.0, I went with the most popular and famous ships first, wasn't really worryed if they were good or not in the game. But once you start, you will end up buying almost or whole collection.

    If you are on a really tight budget or just want to jump straight to a 200 pt list, I can highly recommend a core set and the Tie Defender.
    The Tie/d is amazing, and with aces pointed in the 80s, your all set. Not the best most amazing all takers list, but tournie legal and fun.

    My top tip for getting started with any of FFGs miniature games. Share two startboxes with a friend.
    This goes for X-Wing as well.
    As you go deeper into the game and get more expansions (because you will), the game, or FFG assumes you got the startbox and places upgrade cards accordingly.
    Its both a good and a bad thing IIRC.

    Pretty sound advice for the most part but personally I would have put the Decimator a lot lower. One thing to add though: the striker can drop bombs as well, so the Decimator isn’t the only option for 2.0 ship bombers

    Love the videos just discovered them as I have become obsessed with Xwing during the quarantine. 1 thing that I will disagree with you about is How good of a deal you have to get to make it worth buying 1.0.I'm buying a bunch of 1.0 ships probably from 35-40 percent of original cost And then I was able to get a conversion kit for only 20 bucks. I feel it he's allowed me to get a lot more models quicker than I could have buying them 2.0.

    • @Crabbok
      @Crabbok  Před 4 lety +4

      It really depends on so many factors. How many you are getting is a huge factor - and also the discount. If you only get like 2 or 3 ships at a discount it may not be worth it to also buy a conversion kit when first starting out. Also depends on the discount. I really wanted to focus on what was available for 2nd edition also.
